Salman Rushdie is one of the most widely discussed of contemporary writers; also, one whose work has provoked disagreement and controversy—not least in the far-reaching 'Rushdie affair.' This study seeks to provide a balanced view by approaching Rushdie's fiction in terms of its dual responsibility to the 'found' world of historical circumstance and the 'made' world of the imagination. The novels are seen as characteristic texts for our times, negotiating between different (often conflicting) cultures, dissonant discourses, heterogeneous literary conventions, incommensurable conceptions of truth. The new edition considers the shifts in perspective observable in Rushdie's more recent fiction, adjustments to this creative negotiation which reflect changes in the author's understanding of the world in the new millennium.

Earthquake Design Practice for Buildings covers the main principles and design rules that are used to design buildings to resist the effect of earthquakes. It offers comprehensive, practical and easy to read advice on the technical issues that have to be considered in the seismic design of buildings. This indispensable guide outlines the principles of structural dynamics used to establish how a building and its foundations respond to strong ground shaking. Extensive advice is provided on the choice and design of structural forms and materials which produce practical, affordable and attractive buildings resilient to earthquakes. Now in its fourth edition and written by two experienced seismic engineers, this book has been updated to take into account the many developments in seismic design practice in recent years, including updates to international seismic design standards, along with new editions of US design standards, upcoming changes to Eurocode 8, and a comparison with Indian and Chinese code requirements a new chapter on seismic performance objectives for new and existing structures, and the latest developments in performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) expanded coverage on the design of masonry and timber structures design of specific seismic-protective technologies, such as base isolation and supplemental damping, and the role of ‘non-structural’ building components in delivering resilient, damage-resistant seismic design a revised introduction on the wider technical and socio-economic factors affecting earthquake resilience. Containing information about the updated international seismic standards, Earthquake Design Practice for Buildings is directed at practising engineers and advanced-level students seeking a broad survey of the latest developments in seismic engineering. It also appeals to those who have a sound general knowledge of structural design but who may be unfamiliar with the problems of providing earthquake resistance. Want to find out more on designing earthquake-resistant buildings in seismic areas around the world? Read Damian Grant's, author of Earthquake Design Practice for Buildings, blog: Beyond life safety: how to make sure our buildings behave themselves in an earthquake.

The New Historians of the Twelfth-Century Renaissance

The New Historians of the Twelfth-Century Renaissance

Peter Damian-Grint

Examination of the striking new style of writing history in the twelfth century, by men such as Gaimar, Wace and Ambroise. The mid-twelfth century saw the sudden appearance of a remarkable group of writers: the "new historians", authors such as Geffrei Gaimar, Benoît de Sainte-Maure, Wace, Jordan Fantosme and Ambroise, who were the earliest historicalwriters to use French. Each had his own style and authorial persona; yet together, despite their considerable differences, they pioneered a common form of historical writing which is quite distinct from the styles of previous vernacular writers. This book studies some of the more characteristic elements of the common style used by the vernacular historians. Their detached and "self-conscious" authorial presentation is particularly notable: it is seen both in the prologues and epilogues to their works, where they present their source materials as reliable, themselves as serious scholars, and their works as worthy of belief, and constantly throughout the text as the historians direct audience response to their work. The author shows how this "historical" style fits into both the vernacular and the Latin literature current in the period: the vernacular historians borrowed elements from both the learnedand the popular traditions to produce their own successful and vigorous hybrid, one which was still producing new shoots as late as the fifteenth century and which was widely copied and imitated by both writers of courtly romanceand by writers of prose history. Dr PETER DAMIAN-GRINT teaches at Brasenose College, Oxford.

PENGUIN BOOKS

The #1 New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2017 "Eminently readable but thick with import . . . Grant hits like a Mack truck of knowledge." --Ta-Nehisi Coates, The Atlantic Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Chernow returns with a sweeping and dramatic portrait of one of our most compelling generals and presidents, Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman, or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow shows in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency. Before the Civil War, Grant was flailing. His business ventures had ended dismally, and despite distinguished service in the Mexican War he ended up resigning from the army in disgrace amid recurring accusations of drunkenness. But in war, Grant began to realize his remarkable potential, soaring through the ranks of the Union army, prevailing at the battle of Shiloh and in the Vicksburg campaign, and ultimately defeating the legendary Confederate general Robert E. Lee. Along the way, Grant endeared himself to President Lincoln and became his most trusted general and the strategic genius of the war effort. Grant's military fame translated into a two-term presidency, but one plagued by corruption scandals involving his closest staff members. More important, he sought freedom and justice for black Americans, working to crush the Ku Klux Klan and earning the admiration of Frederick Douglass, who called him "the vigilant, firm, impartial, and wise protector of my race." After his presidency, he was again brought low by a dashing young swindler on Wall Street, only to resuscitate his image by working with Mark Twain to publish his memoirs, which are recognized as a masterpiece of the genre. With lucidity, breadth, and meticulousness, Chernow finds the threads that bind these disparate stories together, shedding new light on the man whom Walt Whitman described as "nothing heroic... and yet the greatest hero." Chernow's probing portrait of Grant's lifelong struggle with alcoholism transforms our understanding of the man at the deepest level. This is America's greatest biographer, bringing movingly to life one of our finest but most underappreciated presidents. The definitive biography, Grant is a grand synthesis of painstaking research and literary brilliance that makes sense of all sides of Grant's life, explaining how this simple Midwesterner could at once be so ordinary and so extraordinary. Named one of the best books of the year by Goodreads - Amazon - The New York Times - Newsday - BookPage - Barnes and Noble - Wall Street Journal
