Grazia Deledda (1871-1936) was the author of many influential novels and remains one of the most significant Italian women writers of her time. However, critics tend to pigeonhole her works into convenient literary categories and to ignore the uniqueness of her style and voice. Grazia Deledda's Dance of Modernity offers a timely and thought-provoking interpretation of this Nobel laureate, examining her work in the context of European philosophical and literary modernity. Margherita Heyer-Caput takes a philosophical and philological approach in order to provide a reassessment of Deledda's position in the literary canon. At the same time, she raises the larger issue of the status of allegedly 'regional' or 'minor' literatures within the context of Italian modernity. Dealing with four novels representative of Deledda's vast corpus, Heyer-Caput addresses and dismantles elements of regionalismo, verismo, and decadentismo, labels with which Deledda's works are regularly associated. This is the first volume to introduce some of Deledda's overlooked texts to an Anglophone audience. It invites readers to overturn established critical categories and to question margin-centre hierarchies both in the broad context of literary modernity and the narrower frame of Deledda's writing. Grazia Deledda's Dance of Modernity is a highly original and innovative interpretation of Deledda's narrative in philosophical perspective, which also includes the study of textual variations and considers cultural history in Italy during the early twentieth century. It is a much-needed examination of an important writer and how she managed to construct her own literary and gender identity in the context of modernity.

Central to Grazia Deledda’s narrative worlds are the relationships between her characters and the vast landscapes they inhabit. Deledda decodes, translates, and represents her characters, her characters’ emotions, and her natural and urban landscapes in a language that shares a vocabulary with the visual arts. However, despite the fact that her descriptions contain the gradation of Modernist painting, beginning with Impressionism, no book-length study has been dedicated to investigating Deledda’s relationship with the visual arts and the resulting painterly aesthetic of her colorful and nuanced narratives. Grazia Deledda’s Painterly Aesthetic seeks to present an articulated and colorful literary panorama of Deledda’s novels and short stories situated between literature and pictorial art. The analyses guided by these two cardinal points are undertaken by contributors who have a profound awareness of an epochal change and work in different disciplines. Two years from the centenary of her receipt of the Nobel Prize, the contributors investigate the connections, consonances, and differences between Grazia Deledda’s oeuvre and other works inside this panorama to verify and affirm a possible unity of purpose. At the same time, they seek to ascertain whether these connections can corroborate and exalt the choices that the Sardinian writer had made with great effort to free herself from the constraints of an environment that was at times hostile to her aesthetic choices.

Riccardo di San Vittore (Scozia, ca 1110 - Parigi, 10 marzo 1173) stato un teologo e filosofo francese di origine scozzese. Fu uno dei pi importanti teologi mistici del XII secolo nonch priore dell'abbazia benedettina di San Vittore a Parigi, dal 1162 alla morte. Riccardo fu allievo di Ugo di San Vittore, di cui adott e svilupp principi e metodi. La sua opera pi importante, il De Trinitate, cerca di giungere agli elementi essenziali della dottrina trinitaria mediante un processo di ragionamento speculativo. Riccardo esercit un grande influsso su Bonaventura da Bagnoregio e i mistici francescani. I suoi scritti gli fecero ottenere il soprannome di "Magnus Contemplator". Nel Paradiso di Dante (X, 130), considerato fra i teologi e i dottori della Chiesa, insieme con Isidoro di Siviglia e Beda il Venerabile. De gratia contemplationis, seu Benjamin major. Il sottotitolo tratto dal Salmo CXXXI, 8 (Surge, Domine, in requiem tuam, tu et arca santificationis tu ). Sono da sempre molto legata alla mia citt , Trieste. una citt strana, un po' italiana, un po' austriaca e un po' balcanica. E stranamente non niente di tutto questo. come un puzzle indefinibile: in ogni angolo si trovano ricordi di quella citt meravigliosa che stata sotto l'Impero Asburgico accanto a immagini dell'architettura funzionale degli anni Trenta. Trieste anche una citt multiculturale e multireligiosa, una volta principale porto di un grande Impero che raccoglieva tante etnie. I triestini hanno cos imparato ad essere allo stesso tempo molto ospitali e respingenti Trieste piena di mare, di cielo e di roccia carsica, ed continuamente presente negli occhi e nel cuore di chi la conosce per la prima volta. Per me una continua fonte di ispirazione ed anche solo una passeggiata in citt riserva nuove scoperte.Tutti i modelli presenti in questo libro hanno qualcosa di "triestino" vuoi i decori colorati che si ispirano agli edifici Liberty, vuoi i pizzi geometrici che richiamano le vetrate degli edifici di culto delle pi diverse religioni, vuoi le linee austere, ma allo stesso tempo eleganti, degli scialli che ricordano le facciate dei palazzi Neoclassici.Ma le ispirazioni sono talmente tante che non possono essere racchiuse tutte in un unico libro, e un secondo volume raccoglier altri modelli nati da nuovi e continui spunti.

I have always had a strong bond with my city - Trieste.Trieste is a strange city: a bit Italian, a bit Austrian and a bit Balkan; yet, strange as it may seem, unlike any of them. It is an indefinable puzzle: every corner of the city holds vestiges of that marvelous city - once part of the Habsburg Empire - as well as glimpses of the functional architecture of the 1930s. Trieste is also a city of many cultures and many religions; it was once the main port of a great Empire that embraced many ethnicities. This has taught the people of Trieste to be very hospitable, but also very defensive Trieste is a city surrounded by sea, sky and karst rock; a city which remains in the mind and heart of anyone who sees the city for the first time. For me, Trieste is a constant source of inspiration and every walk through the city is sure to unveil new treasures.All of the patterns in this book have a touch of "Trieste" in them: perhaps a colourful motif inspired by the Art Nouveau architecture, or a geometric lace that brings to mind the windows of one of the many churches or temples, or perhaps the austere, yet elegant lines of a shawl inspired by the Neoclassic building fa ades.The inspirations are so many that a single bookcould not hold them all, so I am preparing a secondvolume to present new patterns born of my new and continuous impressions of Trieste.
