Whereas the roots of the clinical neuropsychology specialty can be found in fields over a century old, it has grown very rapidly during the past thirty years. Doctoral programs in clinical psychology and predoctoral internship programs have developed concentrations in this area, as the need for postdoctoral training in this specialty has become increasingly acknowledged. Typically thought of as the clinical and empirical study of brain-behavior relationships, clinical neuropsychology is firmly grounded in psychology, behavioral neurology, psychiatry, psychometrics, and statistics. In this volume, Drs. Lamberty and Nelson provide a comprehensive overview of the foundational and functional competencies related to the broad field of clinical neuropsychology. The authors distill not only the most important dimensions of the current science and practice, but also delineate important future directions and challenges. Anyone interested in obtaining an extensive survey of the extant literature related to this specialty, as well as insider knowledge on important professional issues, will find this volume to be an invaluable resource. Series in Specialty Competencies in Professional Psychology Series Editors Arthur M. Nezu and Christine Maguth Nezu As the field of psychology continues to grow and new specialty areas emerge and achieve recognition, it has become increasingly important to define the standards of professional specialty practice. Developed and conceived in response to this need for practical guidelines, this series presents methods, strategies, and techniques for conducting day-to-day practice in any given psychology specialty. The topical volumes address best practices across the functional and foundational competencies that characterize the various psychology specialties, including clinical psychology, cognitive and behavioral psychology, school psychology, geropsychology, forensic psychology, clinical neuropsychology, couples and family psychology, and more. Functional competencies include common practice activities like assessment and intervention, while foundational competencies represent core knowledge areas such as ethical and legal issues, cultural diversity, and professional identification. In addition to describing these competencies, each volume provides a definition, description, and development timeline of a particular specialty, including its essential and characteristic pattern of activities, as well as its distinctive and unique features. Written by recognized experts in their respective fields, volumes are comprehensive, up-to-date, and accessible. These volumes offer invaluable guidance to not only practicing mental health professionals, but those training for specialty practice as well.
Communication Within Animal Cells

Communication Within Animal Cells

Greg J. Barritt

Oxford University Press

This textbook brings together and puts into perspective current knowledge of intra-cellular signalling systems within animals. The ordered growth and functioning of animal cells requires the transfer of information from one part of the cell to another. This information comes from a variety of sources, both within and outside the cell. Hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors and extra-cellular metabolites interact with specific receptors on the plasma membrane or in the cytoplasm. Inside the cell, information is relayed by intra-cellular messengers including cyclic nucleotides, inositol polyphosphates, diacylglycerol and calcium, GTP-binding proteins, protein kinases and DNA-binding proteins. Finely balanced interactions between these different signalling pathways ensure that the required response occurs and abnormalities in any of the components of the system can lead to a variety of diseases, including cancer.
The Flying Bushman - Stories from the Heart
In Stories from the Heart, Greg Keynes, best-selling author of The Flying Bushman, returns with a new collection of stories about life, making a living, and living life to the fullest. From droving wild livestock on an Australian station to travelling Europe as a young man, to an account of the helicopter crash that nearly cost him his life and the NDE he had, these stories introduce an interesting cast of characters (both human and animal). Set largely against the backdrop of the Outback and describing a way of life that many will never know, Greg takes life by the horns, so to speak, in stories about cowboys and horses, tough bulls and even tougher, smart goats, and a look at some of the people and places that make this part of the world unique.

"And you thought the passengers were mad. Airline employees are fed up, too-with pay cuts, increased workloads and management's miserly ways, which leave workers to explain to often-enraged passengers why flying has become such a miserable experience."—New York Times, December 22, 2007When both an industry's workers and its customers report high and rising frustration with the way they are being treated, something is fundamentally wrong. In response to these conditions, many of the world's airlines have made ever-deeper cuts in services and their workforces. Is it too much to expect airlines, or any other enterprise, to provide a fair return to investors, high-quality reliable service to their customers, and good jobs for their employees?Measured against these three expectations, the airline industry is failing. In the first five years of the twenty-first century alone, U.S. airlines lost a total of $30 billion while shedding 100,000 jobs, forcing the remaining workers to give up over $15 billion in wages and benefits. Combined with plummeting employee morale, shortages of air traffic controllers, and increased congestion and flight delays, a total collapse of the industry may be coming. Is this state of affairs inevitable? Or is it possible to design a more sustainable, less volatile industry that better balances the objectives of customers, investors, employees, and the wider society? Does deregulation imply total abrogation of government's responsibility to oversee an industry showing the clear signs of deterioration and increasing risk of a pending crisis?Greg J. Bamber, Jody Hoffer Gittell, Thomas A. Kochan, and Andrew von Nordenflycht explore such questions in a well-informed and engaging way, using a mix of quantitative evidence and qualitative studies of airlines from North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Up in the Air provides clear and realistic strategies for achieving a better, more equitable balance among the interests of customers, employees, and shareholders. Specifically, the authors recommend that firms learn from the innovations of companies like Southwest and Continental Airlines in order to build a positive workplace culture that fosters coordination and commitment to high-quality service, labor relations policies that avoid long drawn-out conflicts in negotiating new agreements, and business strategies that can sustain investor, employee, and customer support through the ups and downs of business cycles.

Literary Research and Irish Literature: Strategies & Sources explores primary and secondary research resources relevant to the study of Irish literary authors, works, genres, and history. Sources covered include general literary research guides; union library catalogs; print and online bibliographies; manuscripts and archives; microfilm and digitization projects; scholarly journals; periodicals, newspapers, and reviews; and electronic and Web resources. To ease comparison and evaluation of references, each chapter addresses how to choose and utilize research methods and tools to yield the most relevant information. This guide also examines the strengths and weaknesses of core and specialized electronic and print research tools and standard search techniques and—when appropriate—covers the historical and cultural contexts and usability issues of unique reference sources. This volume, number 5 in the series, raises trenchant issues in Irish literary scholarship, such as the problem of defining what Irish literature is; gaps in criticism and secondary literature devoted to Irish literature; neglected areas of scholarly inquiry, including Irish literature by women and lesser-known writers; and the rewards of interdisciplinary research. It concludes with a brief consideration of a scenario illustrating how a scholar might use strategies and sources covered in the text to solve a research problem.

The End of Fatima As always suspected, Fatima just might be about the end of the present world after all. On June 13, 1917, Our Lady of Fatima said to Lucia, "I will take Francisco and Jacinta to Heaven] soon, but you must remain a while longer. Jesus wishes to use you to make me better known and loved." With Sr. Lucia dying in 2005, "a while longer" ended up being another 87 years. Taking its title from these words of Blessed Mary and graced with an illustration of the third secret of Fatima on its cover, A While Longer provides not only the synoptic retelling of the apparition, for the first time it situates Fatima in Salvation History and explains the meaning behind the apparition. In A While Longer, Fatima and other major apparitions of the twentieth century are combined with Sacred Scripture in a unique way to unravel the meanings behind both the messages given through the apparitions and the passages in Scripture known for centuries to pertain to the end times. Fatima, the Divine Mercy revelation to Saint Faustina, and the apparitions of Garabandal and Medjugorje are synthesized with Sacred Scripture to explain: the Elijah who is to come the meaning of 'time, times, and half time' the Great Tribulation and how it is cut short the mark of the beast the sign of the Son of Man the Third Temple the conversion of 'Israel' and more.
