"Of course, it's great to go to Europe; anyone would jump at the chance, but still--" As the speaker, a bright-eyed girl of sixteen, paused, her companion, slightly younger, continued: "Yes, I know what you mean it doesn't seem just like Irma to go away before school closes. Why, if she misses the finals, she may have to drop from the class next year." "Probably she expects Italy to help her in her history and Latin." "Travelling is all very well," responded the other, "but there's nothing better than regular study. Why, here's Irma coming," she concluded hastily; "she can speak for herself." "You are surely gossiping about me," cried Irma pleasantly, as she approached her two friends seated on the front steps of Gertrude's house. "You have surely been gossiping, for you stopped talking as soon as you saw me, and Lucy looks almost guilty." "Listeners sometimes hear good of themselves," replied Lucy, "but we'll admit we have been wondering how you made up your mind to run away from school. I shouldn't have dared."

The Last Refuge of the Mt. Graham Red Squirrel

When the University of Arizona announced plans to build observatories on Mt. Graham, atop the Pinaleno Mountains, the construction was seen as a potential threat to an isolated species found only on this sky island. The Mt. Graham red squirrel was declared endangered? by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Legal action required the university to provide funds for research and monitoring the Mt Graham red squirrel. This book is derived from a symposium on the Mt. Graham red squirrel and offers a comprehensive picture of the ecology of this red squirrel and the impacts on its mountain home. Forty contributors detail studies conducted to understand the natural history of the creature and the challenges and changing ecological conditions on Mt. Graham. Each chapter tells a unique story that contributes to the mosaic of natural history knowledge about the endangered Mt. Graham red squirrel. They reflect diverse viewpoints on the problems of conserving the habitats and populations of the squirrel, showing how it was complicated by perspectives ranging from Native Americans? concern over traditional lands to astronomers hope for a better view of space, and by issues ranging from forestry practices to climate change. Studies of such factors as squirrel middens, seed hoarding, and nest sites provide definitive research on the animal.Ongoing censuses continue to track the squirrel's population trends, and both Forest Service and Arizona Department of Transportation activities continue to be scrutinized by interested parties to determine their impact. This book represents an authoritative overview of this still-endangered species and its habitat.

Stanford Law and Politics

sidottu
In this substantially revised second edition, Neil MacCormick delivers a clear and current introduction to the life and works of H.L.A. Hart, noted Professor of Jurisprudence at Oxford University from 1952 to 1968. Hart established a worldwide reputation through his powerful philosophical arguments and writings in favor of liberalizing criminal law and applying humane principles to punishment. This book demonstrates that Hart also made important contributions to analytical jurisprudence, notably by clarifying many terms and concepts used in legal discourse, including the concept of law itself. Taking into account developments since the first edition was published, this book provides a constructively critical account of Hart's legal thought. The work includes Hart's ideas on legal reasoning, judicial discretion, the social sources of law, the theory of legal rules, the sovereignty of individual conscience, the notion of obligation, the concept of a right, and the relationship between morality and the law. MacCormick actively engages with current scholarly interpretations, bringing this accessible account of England's greatest legal philosopher of the twentieth century up-to-date.

Baltimore native Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was an essayist, literary critic, magazine editor, novelist, and journalist. Starting as a reporter for the Baltimore Morning Herald at the turn of the century, Mencken eventually became associated with the Baltimore Sun and his work for the newspaper spanned five decades. In H.L. Mencken: An Annotated Bibliography, S.T. Joshi provides the most exhaustive and comprehensive bibliography of the writings of H. L. Mencken ever assembled. It presents detailed information on his book publications from 1903 to the present, with a full list of editions and reprints. Most significantly, it presents for the first time a comprehensive annotated listing of his magazine and newspaper work (including more than 1,500 anonymous editorials for the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Evening Sun, and other papers, which have never been listed in any previous bibliographies), a thorough index to his book reviews, and a full list of interviews Mencken gave during his lifetime. Word counts of nearly every item in the bibliography have been supplied, and the book has been thoroughly indexed by name, title, and periodical. Because every item has been annotated, scholars and students can, for the first time, gain an idea of the subject-matter of all Mencken's writings, especially his magazine and newspaper work. The indexes will allow users to locate any given item with ease. The chronological arrangement of each section allows users to understand the growth and development of Mencken's work, making this volume an invaluable resource.

H.L.A. Hart is among the most important philosophers of the twentieth century, with an especially great influence on the philosophy of law. His 1961 book The Concept of Law has become an enduring classic of legal philosophy, and has also left a significant imprint on moral and political philosophy. In this volume, leading contemporary legal and political philosopher Matthew H. Kramer provides a crystal-clear analysis of Hart’s contributions to our understanding of the nature of law. He elucidates and scrutinizes every major aspect of Hart’s jurisprudential thinking, ranging from his general methodology to his defense of legal positivism. He shows how Hart’s achievement in The Concept of Law, despite the evolution of debates in subsequent decades, remains central to contemporary legal philosophy because it lends itself to being reinterpreted in light of new concerns and interests. Kramer therefore pays particular attention to the strength of Hart’s insights in the context of present-day disputes among philosophers over the reality of normative entities and properties and over the semantics of normative statements. This book is an invaluable guide to Hart’s thought for students and scholars of legal philosophy and jurisprudence, as well as moral and political philosophy.

H.L. Mencken on Religion

H. L. Mencken

Prometheus Books

No one ever argued more forcefully or with such acerbic wit against the foolish aspects of religion as H. L. Mencken (1880-1956). As a journalist, he gained national prominence through his newspaper columns describing the now-famous 1925 Scopes trial, which pitted Fundamentalists against a public school teacher who dared to teach evolution. But both before and after the Scopes trial, Mencken spent much of his career as a columnist and book reviewer lampooning the ignorant piety of gullible Americans. S. T. Joshi has brought together and organized many of Mencken's writings on religion in this provocative and entertaining collection. The articles here presented demonstrate that Mencken canvassed the entire range of religious phenomena of his time, from evangelists Billy Sunday and Aime Semple McPherson, to Christian Scientists, and theosophists and spiritualists. On a more serious note are his discussions of the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and the scientific worldview as a rival to religious belief. Also included are poignant autobiographical accounts of Mencken's own upbringing and his core beliefs on religion, ethics, and politics. If anything was sacred to Mencken, it was the right to speak one's mind freely, and many of his attacks are directed against those true believers who he felt tried to foist their beliefs on others to stifle independent thinking. For everyone who values freethought and sharp intelligence, this collection of articles by America's premier iconoclast is a must.

H.L. Hunt: Motive & Opportunity

After being summarily thrown out of the upcoming 1964 World's Fair project, presumably at the instruction of JFK himself, billionaire H.L. Hunt turned to John Curington, his attorney, and said, "I've about got a belly-full of those Kennedy boys. They both need to go." A few months later John Kennedy would be dead, followed by his brother a few years later. Formerly undisclosed and privileged information suggests that one man could have had the motive and opportunity to influence the untimely deaths of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, along with the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. For the first time, John Curington, lawyer to Haroldson Lafayette "H.L." Hunt Jr., divulges once-private information to author Mitchel Whitington, that substantiates the fact that a conspiracy could have indeed existed. Come explore a previously-untold story - the story of John Curington - that may fill gaps in the tragic tales of these important national figures, and provide information that has never been unearthed before. Read it for yourself, and be the judge as to whether H.L. Hunt had both the motive and opportunity to have influenced the deaths of such prominent men.
H L MENCKEN AN ACIDIC ANTHOLOGY
H.L. Mencken was America's most prominent iconoclastic journalist of the first half of the 20th century, and he still has a considerable following. Mencken's writings have been in print continuously for over 100 years, including a collection published in the 1950s that's still in print almost 70 years after it was first published. This is the first new collection of Mencken's writings to appear in decades, and it consists primarily of complete pieces rather than excerpts from his newspaper and magazine articles. The focus is on writings that are relevant to the present day, that are biting, insightful, and that showcase Mencken's trademark dark humor. Topics include American politics, evangelical Christianity, the South, the Scopes trial, sex, morals, Prohibition, civil liberties, war, quack cures, American literature, and American journalism.
