This volume is intended for reference by the commercial sugar cane grower. Disciplines are covered for the successful production of a sugar cane crop. A number of good books exist on field practices related to the growing of sugar cane. Two examples are R.P. Humbert's The Growing of Sugar Cane and Alex G. Alexander's Sugarcane Physiology. Volumes of technical papers, produced regularly by the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists, are also a source of reference. Perhaps foremost, local associations, such as the South African Sugar Technologists' Association, do excellent work in this regard. In my forty-five years of experience with the day-to-day problems of producing a satisfactory crop of sugar cane, deciding what should be done to produce such a crop was not straightforward. Although the literature dealing with specific subjects is extensive, I tried to consolidate some of the material to provide the man in the field with information, or an overview of the subject matter.

Soil science in the Netherlands puts strong emphasis on the relationship between parent material and soil formation, and between physiographic conditions and land use. This approach, developed by the late Professor Dr C. H. Edelman ( 1903-1964), is quite understandable in a country where soils have to a great extent developed from alluvial and aeolian materials of recent geological origin. Dutch soil scientists have paid much attention to pedogenesis in fresh sediments, known as 'initial soil formation' or 'ripening', and to groundwater as a soil forming factor. Furthermore, human influence on soil genesis, in this land of man-made soils, has been tho roughly investigated. 'Major soils and soil regions in the Netherlands' clearly reflects these specific features of soils work in this country. In his book, Mr H. de Bakker, Head of the Soil Classification Section of the Netherlands Soil Survey Institute (Stichting voor Bodemkartering) addresses the special interests of foreign soil scientists and of students of earth sciences. The author examines representative soil profiles not only with respect to the Netherlands' system of soil classification- of which he is the co-author-but also in terms of some of the major classification systems used in other countries. It appears that a well characterized soil profile may find a very different place in various classifications and that even for a trained specialist it is often difficult to arrive at a specific determination within a given system.

The monograph analyzes and systematizes modern information data on the use of vegetable raw materials in the production of bakery products. Technological and economic efficiency of the use of wild food raw materials and products of oilseeds processing is substantiated. The chemical composition and feasibility of using products of rosehip fruit processing, oilseeds flax and peanuts in the production of national bakery products has been studied. Technological solutions have been developed for obtaining rosehip fruit powder, flaxseed meal made of semi-strained after cold pressing flaxseed oil, and peanut mass. It is established that in terms of content. In 100 g of the product of the main nutrients the leader is ML (17 points), followed by MA (28 points) and PS (29 points), the list is completed by wheat flour of the 1st grade (36 points). The monograph is recommended for researchers, specialists of oil and fat industry and food industry, teachers, doctoral students and undergraduates of higher educational institutions.
A staple food in many diets, bread has been baked since ancient times and is considered a basic necessity by many. Baking and Bakeries charts the history of baking, from the ancient breads cooked with grain-paste through the introduction of yeast, to modern day variations. The author describes the different methods used in baking and the range of tools and machinery used. Focusing chiefly on the industrial bakeries of the Victorian era, with a final chapter addressing modern day improvements, this book takes a look at the development of the industry as well as the traditions of baking that have survived for centuries.

His nephew James, in a somnambulistic trance, climbs the town's water tower to re-enact a scene from one of Mark's novels. A local country music DJ has an on-air breakdown that has him ranting about a time-travelling Jesus before burning the studio to the ground. A Sheriff's Deputy suffers vivid flashbacks to the "Holiday Killer" murders of twenty years previous, causing him to believe that the long-dead serial killer has taken possession of his soul.As the town descends into chaos and violence, Mark and his friends come to suspect that the mysterious epidemic may be connected to the events of twenty years prior. But how can they defeat an evil that comes from within their own minds? And they can't stay awake forever....
