Amalisa is set apart. She is tiny among the folk of her village. She was born with a birthmark that mars her face. And she possesses the magical gift of a pearl singer-she can sing in multiple voices at the same time. But in Amalisa, the gift extends beyond the pearls. Because of her power, she will be taken far from her home, her village, her loved ones, her land. In her long and unexpected journey, she must learn to accept herself as she is, overcome her fears, and embrace her powers in order to deliver herself, her friend, and the man she loves from those who threaten her life with their greed. The Pearl Singer is a magical version of "Thumbelina," set in a world of ritual and grace, of greed and betrayal, with a twist on the ending.

What impact does war have on women's well-being? War is far more likely to occur in countries where women lack equal standing in society. When those wars occur, the effects are also gendered. If gender inequality is affected by both the causes and impacts of armed conflict, we need to think about the implications of this interrelationship. Focusing on gendered political inequality, this Element takes a large-N approach to exploring whether inequality variation in states at conflict leads to variation in women's health outcomes. By linking the two processes, the authors are able to directly account for the impact of political inequality on which countries participate in civil conflict when they estimate the impact of inequality on conflict consequences, particularly those relating to women's health.

The fates of two wise men from the same village living in different time periods are connected by one mythical creature--and forces they cannot control--in this compelling supernatural tale that imaginatively retells the historical legend of the Wolf of Allendale. In a Druid village in Northumberland, England, Bran, the village leader, must face two dangerous opponents: an otherworldly animal and formidable invaders from the south. Two thousand years later, at the dawn of the Industrial Age, this sleepy English village once again faces the frightening menace. Something is killing the sheep--and leaving large, mysterious footprints across the countryside.Bert, an old shepherd, is the only villager who understands what is happening. The beast that once terrorized this land, a mythical wolf known as a cysgod-cerddwr--shadow walker--has been disturbed for the first time since the Iron Age, and only one weapon can stop it: an ancient ritual that has nearly been lost to time.Separated by eons, Bran and Bert must battle this fearsome wolf using the sacred practice that has been passed down from generation to generation. Both must confront the threat of the mysterious beast and the end of their way of life. Bran's culture is imperiled by Roman conquest. Bert's shepherd life is threatened by the railways and mines that encroach upon his small town. In this thought-provoking paranormal novel, Hannah Spencer uses the story of the Wolf of Allendale as a creative lens to examine the clash of progress and tradition as she brings to light ancient folklore that is nearly forgotten.
The Human Condition

The Human Condition

Hannah Arendt; Danielle Allen

University of Chicago Press
2018
pokkari
The past year has seen a resurgence of interest in the political thinker Hannah Arendt, “the theorist of beginnings,” whose work probes the logics underlying unexpected transformations—from totalitarianism to revolution. A work of striking originality, The Human Condition is in many respects more relevant now than when it first appeared in 1958. In her study of the state of modern humanity, Hannah Arendt considers humankind from the perspective of the actions of which it is capable. The problems Arendt identified then—diminishing human agency and political freedom, the paradox that as human powers increase through technological and humanistic inquiry, we are less equipped to control the consequences of our actions—continue to confront us today. This new edition, published to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of its original publication, contains Margaret Canovan’s 1998 introduction and a new foreword by Danielle Allen. A classic in political and social theory, The Human Condition is a work that has proved both timeless and perpetually timely.

After publishing the first book, My Roman Soldier (ISBN 9781477605936), in 2013, I believed that I was finished articulating the sexual abuse my daughter endured by her biological father and his-my then husband-emotional abuse of me. However, shortly after distribution of the book began, I recognized that there was much more to be told about Lauren's journey... and mine. My Roman Soldier, written under pen name Hannah Alden, described the discovery of abuse and corresponding sequence of events that forever changed our lives. This book, A Cancer Called Abuse, demonstrates how good has come from those dark days. I use a pen name because, after trying to work with a printing house (for the first book), there were challenges producing a book that is nonfictional in nature while using my own name. Hannah Alden has significance to me. I do, however, use Lauren's first name since, in the United States, nearly one quarter of a million people are named Lauren, making it less traceable, and... because that is her name. This book is dedicated to those individuals who have had personal experience with any form of abuse-physical, sexual, emotional, mental, financial-and are in varying stages of surviving... and thriving from such encounters. Abuse, like enduring a cancer diagnosis, changes a person... no argument there. The real question is whether you allow yourself to be changed for the better, or for the worse. With God's help, I have been transformed into a new person.
