Community Ecology and Salamander Guilds

Community Ecology and Salamander Guilds

Hairston Nelson G.

Cambridge University Press
1988
pokkari
This informative book, first published in 1987, presents the theories of community ecology within the context of a natural example. The text describes and examines issues in community ecology and shows how research on salamanders has helped to solve some of the problems surrounding the theories. Salamanders exist in stable populations of the kind assumed in community theory and are more appropriate than most other animals for research on the applications of that theory. The interesting and meaningful results, collected from observation on these excellent subjects posed challenges to beliefs within community ecology. Life histories of salamanders, fieldwork in distinctly differing habitats, competition, predation and evolution are discussed in an easily readable text. Professional ecologists and students of community ecology and herpetology will be interedted in the information synthesised in this book.
Ecological Experiments

Ecological Experiments

Nelson G. Hairston

Cambridge University Press
1989
pokkari
Ecological Experiments stresses the importance to ecology of field experiments, where variables are manipulated in order to collect data on specific hypotheses, as opposed to the more passive observational method. The book begins by introducing a series of ecological questions that can be addressed experimentally for example, what is the significance of competition among species? The minimal requirements of experimental design that must be met are then introduced, together with examples of good and poor experiments from the ecological literature and a consideration of the trade-offs that may be forced on the experimenter by field conditions. All ecologists, and especially students beginning their careers in field study, will find in this text a good introduction to the experimental foundation of ecology.

The good book says "...without vision...the people will perish...." Perhaps as never before in the history of our nation and culture have those words been so true Our culture is in desperate need of vision Circumstances can be both good and bad in life...even if one LIVES with vision...LIFE can happen and knock one for a "loop" But, if one lives without vision...it can be fatal...in numerous ways In this book Andre attempts to encourage one to not only LIVE with vision...but to do so...with an encouraging attitude even in the tough circumstances of life. He does so from not only an intellectual and spiritual standpoint, but as one who arguably has had more than his share of the tough circumstances in LIFE You will be blessed by Andre's thoughts...enjoy Dr. Dale L Denny, JD/CPA Nashville, TN.
Southwest Virginia Civil Rights Leader Nannie Berger Hairston: An Oral History
Nannie Berger Hairston was a crusader for justice in twentieth-century Virginia. Nannie Berger Hairston was born in West Virginia in 1921, half a century after the end of the Civil War. She attended segregated schools, graduated, married and started a family. When Nannie's husband, John, lost his job in the coal mine, the Hairstons moved to Southwest Virginia. It was the height of Jim Crow, and yet, against great odds, she and John became leaders in the community, advocating for civil rights and social justice. Nannie Hairston's advice was sought by the powerless as well as the powerful. At the time of her death in 2017, she had taken her place as an icon for truth, justice and love. Local author Sheree Scarborough uses Nannie Hairston's own words to tell her story.

This new rhetoric builds on the strengths of earlier editions, offering students clear and useful suggestions for strengthening their writing and showing them how they can develop a piece of effective writing through a process that is manageable and reliable. In the twenty years since the first edition of Successful Writing, the elements of good writing have not changed. But the kinds of writing college students now do and the ways they deliver their writing have changed a great deal. Students today still write essays and research papers, but they also create Web sites, give oral presentations (and thus write and design PowerPoint slides), produce brochures, and of course write a lot of email. The new edition of Successful Writing offers students the kind of sensible, real-world advice they need for these and many other writing situations

Adults are being incarcerated in the United States at an ever-escalating rate, and child welfare professionals are encountering growing numbers of children who have parents in prison. Current estimates indicate that as many as 1.5 million children have an incarcerated parent; many thousands of others have experienced the incarceration of a parent at some point in their lives. These vulnerable children face unique difficulties, and their growing numbers and special needs demand attention.Existing literature indicates that children whose parents are incarcerated experience a variety of negative consequences, particularly in terms of their emotional health and well being. They also may have difficult interactions or limited contact with their parents. There are also issues connected with their physical care and child custody. The many challenges facing the child welfare system as it attempts to work with this population are explored in Children with Parents in Prison. Topics covered include: "Supporting Families and Children of Mothers in Jail"; "Meeting the Challenge of Permanency Planning for Children with Incarcerated Mothers"; "The Impact of Changing Public Policy on Relatives Caring for Children with Incarcerated Parents"; "Legal Issues and Recommendations"; "Facilitating Parent-Child Contact in Correctional Settings"; "Earning Trust from Youths with None to Spare"; "Developing Quality Services for Offenders and Families"; and in closing, "Understanding the Forces that Influence Incarcerated Fathers' Relationships with Their Children."Children and families have long struggled with the difficulties created when a parent goes to prison. What is new is the magnitude of the problem. This volume calls for increased public awareness of the impact of parental incarceration on children. Its goal is to stimulate discussion about how to best meet the special needs of these children and families and how to provide a resource for the child welfare community as it responds to the growing numbers of children made vulnerable by their parents' incarceration.Cynthia Seymour is general counsel at the Child Welfare League of America in Washington, DC. Creasie Finney Hairston is dean and professor at Jane Addams College of Social Work, the University of Illinois at Chicago.
