This is the story of my mother's life, born Halina Anuszewska, September 11, 1918, in Warsaw, Poland, and died Halina Graf, December 9, 1994, in Berlin, Germany. She was no famous person. Yet she led an extraordinary life under extraordinary circumstances and in the midst of extraordinary times. She was a survivor. Of a childhood that deprived her of the means to develop her creative talents and drove her into an unsuitable early marriage. Of WWII, the Polish uprising in Warsaw in 1944, and the concentration camps in Auschwitz and Ravensbr ck. Of the postwar chaos that eventually landed her in Stuttgart Germany. Of her second unsuitable marriage there to my father, and her two children by that marriage (me and my sister). Of her third unsuitable marriage to a charming alcoholic. Of even greater importance are her own adventurous spirit and her imagination. She could have been a dancer, a singer, an actress, a romance novelist if circumstances had been in her favor. Instead she lived her own "impossible story". I have it in her authentic words in three parts: An autobiography she wrote at my request; a series of interviews I held with her and recorded on tape when I visited her in Berlin three months before her death of cancer in December 1994; and a tape she recorded for me for my birthday. I have translated the original texts from German into English and added notes where necessary. I also wrote introductions and postscripts to the several parts, to explain some items, fill out the narratives, and add my own thoughts and impressions.

This is the first comprehensive examination of the works of contemporary Polish playwright Tadeusz Rozewicz. Halina Filipowicz applies a theoretical perspective to more than a dozen plays and situates the important postwar dramatist on the borders of modernism and postmodernism, arguing that in his laboratory of impure forms he reworks the conventions and dramatic ideas of the past into a theatrical language responsive to our times. Filipowicz makes use of biographical and historical information, comparative frameworks, the lessons of deconstruction, and feminist inquiry to assess the writer's passionate and complex reactions to modern civilization. Written over a thirty-year period, Rozewicz's oeuvre includes thirteen plays, nine minidramas, and four works that transgress established categories of drama. Rozewicz's plays, such as The Card Index and White Marriage, have been staged in the United States and many are available in English. The earliest known dolls' house was made in Bavaria in the mid-sixteenth century. Like most of those built in the following 250 years, it was designed not to be played with, but to be a perfect representation in miniature of a princely house, and to reflect the wealth of the owner. Although children began to play with dolls' houses during the eighteenth century, they remained primarily made for adults. It was only in the nineteenth century that they finally also became children's toys. Moving beyond a traditional study of Polish dramatic literature, Halina Filipowicz turns to the plays themselves and to archival materials, ranging from parliamentary speeches to polemical pamphlets and verse broadsides, to explore the cultural phenomenon of transgressive patriotism and its implications for society in the twenty-first century.
