Reading Wiredu is the first comprehensive overview of the philosophical thought of Kwasi Wiredu. Born in Ghana in 1931, Wiredu, an important observer and critic of philosophy generally, remains an original and penetrating African thinker. Interrelating Wiredu's philosophical writings from across decades, Barry Hallen sets forth the basic tenets and the defining features of his philosophy. Wiredu's thought is divided into five distinct but interconnected areas: his response to the philosophy of Quine on issues of logic and ontology, issues of language in philosophical reflection, the nature of truth as a practical and philosophical concern, the principle of sympathetic impartiality that all human beings must live by to survive as a group, and finally, consensus building as rooted in intentional, negotiated, and rational exchanges that are part of everyday life. In this original and intimate look at Yoruba culture, Barry Hallen asks the Yoruba onisegun—the wisest and most accomplished herbalists or traditional healers, individuals justly reputed to be well versed in Yoruba thought and expression—what it means to be good and beautiful. Posed as an outsider wanting to gain understanding of how to speak Yoruba correctly, Hallen engages the onisegun and has them explain the subtleties and intricacies of Yoruba language use and the philosophy behind particular word choices. Their instructions reveal a striking and profound depiction of Yoruba aesthetic and ethical thought. The detailed interpretations of everyday language that Hallen supplies challenge prevailing Western views that African thought is nothing more than acquiescence to long-established religious or communal values. The philosophy of ordinary language reveals that moral reflection is indeed individual and that evaluations of action and character take place on the basis of clearly and logically delineated criteria. With the onisegun as his guides, Hallen identifies the priorities of Yoruba philosophy and culture through everyday expression and shows that there are rational pathways to both truth and beauty. Barry Hallen has taught philosophy at the Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife) in Nigeria. He is a Fellow at the W. E. B. DuBois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University and Visiting Professor of Philosophy at Morehouse College. He is coauthor (with J. Avhandlingen undersöker och kontextualiserar myter som berör gudars möten med jättar i en hallmiljö. Ingen har tidigare mer utförligt granskat hur interaktionen mellan gudar och jättar i mytiska narrativ kan liknas vid och bidra med kunskap till interaktioner i en historisk hallmiljö. Jättar tolkas som hallägande furstar i motsats till många tidigare studier där jättar betraktats som primitiva kaosväsen eller gudarnas dödsfiender. I studien tolkas jättarna som konkurrerande furstar. I avhandlingen läggs stor vikt vid att beskriva likheter och olikheter i mytiska traditioner om Odens och Tors möten med jättar i en hallmiljö. De båda gudarna möter olika typer av jättar. Myterna beskriver därmed olika värden som är förenade med respektive gud. Oden hämtar kunskap från mångkunniga jättar och Tor markerar heder, ära och mod i sin interaktion med fysiskt kraftfulla jättar. Oden bedrar jättarna och fungerar som en fientlig gäst, medan Tor krossar jättarnas hallar. I merparten av myttraditionerna fungerar jättarna som goda värdar. Tommy Kuusela arbetar som forskningsarkivarie vid Dialekt- och folkminnesarkivet i Uppsala. Han har tidigare publicerat vetenskapliga och populära artiklar om fornnordisk religion, J.R.R. Tolkien, djur och folklore. Detta är en doktorsavhandling i religionshistoria vid Stockholms universitet 2017.

Zahlreiche praxisnahe Beispiele dienen der Vertiefung und Anwendung des Wissens. Der erste Band behandelt die Grundlagen der Tragwerksplanung und -bemessung unter Berücksichtigung der Eurocodes. Eingangs werden detailliert das Sicherheitskonzept im Bauwesen, die Lastannahmen und die Baustoffeigenschaften beschrieben. Den Schwerpunkt bildet die werkstoffübergreifend aufbereitete Querschnittsbemessung. Der Band schließt mit einer Einführung in die Planung von Tragwerken des Hallen- und Geschossbaus. Ziel ist die Entwicklung von Ausführungslösungen, die alle Aspekte des Entwurfs wie Gebrauchstauglichkeit, Gestaltung, Dauerhaftigkeit und Wirtschaftlichkeit berücksichtigen. Für die einzelnen Bauteile werden die bei der statischen Bemessung und konstruktiven Durchbildung zu beachtenden baustoffspezifischen Besonderheiten beschrieben. Dabei wird sowohl auf die Kriterien der Tragfähigkeit (einschließlich der Bauteilstabilität) als auch der Gebrauchstauglichkeit eingegangen. En eftermiddag i juli 1808 rullade en dyster karavan ut från Helsingfors. I vagnarna satt ett 70-tal resande, huvudsakligen officerare från det ockuperade Sveaborg, och de fördes nu som krigsfångar till Ryssland. Med på färden var också den nittonåriga Adelaide von Hauswolff eftersom hon inte ville skiljas från sin far, major Gustaf von Hauswolff, som gick ett ovisst öde till mötes. Med sorg i hjärtat hade hon tagit avsked av sin närmaste väninna, Jeanette von Törne, med löfte om att skriva en dagbok under resan, och det löftet infriades med denna Journal som hon överlämnade till Jeanette som en gåva vid återseendet nio månader senare. Adelaide var en idealisk dagboksförfattare: nyfiken, humoristisk, kritisk och medkännande - en klarögd skildrare av vardag och fest i Ryssland i början av 1800-talet.

Tracing the life of architect Hans Heyerdahl Hallen (1930–2022), this book reveals the transnational influences that shaped his practice in South Africa, and the migratory circles of ideas that defined a new form of subtropical architecture.Beginning with Hallen’s Nordic and South African roots, chapters then explore his practice and studies at the London County Council and Architectural Association, where he met with contemporaries such as Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry. From here, he returned to South Africa with new ideas that challenged the teachings of early modernism, instead combining philosophies such as Norberg Schulz’s genius loci with African traditional architecture (Zulu Kraal) to create buildings unique to local communities and topographical conditions.This need to embrace vernacular forms was a response to local climate conditions and local materials, but also a desire to make cities relevant to the African context. In transmuting European teachings within colonial environments, Hallen’s practice reveals the role of the architect to reflect local communities and to build for their needs, and to create spaces for community and resistance.Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, the study features a wealth of previously-unpublished archival material to explore the role of the architect in the colonial context.
