Im Dezember 1939 verweigerte Hans Langsdorff vor der La-Plata-M ndung einen letzten, aussichtslosen Kampf gegen berlegene britische Seestreitkr fte, sprengte sein Schiff vor Montevideo, rettete seine Besatzung von 1.200 Mann und nahm sich wenige Tage sp ter das Leben. Um seine Gestalt hat sich ein Mythos gebildet, der eine rationale Auseinandersetzung mit seinen Handlungsmotiven zwischen milit rischer Loyalit t und moralischer Integrit t bisher erschwerte. Langsdorff handelte in einer Grenzsituation, r umte der ethischen Dimension den Vorrang ein und bernahm die pers nliche Verantwortung, indem er aus dem Leben schied. In seiner Gesamtbiographie Langsdorffs beschreibt der Autor einen Offizier, der zeitlebens versuchte, seine geistige Unabh ngigkeit - selbst in der hierarchischen Struktur des Milit rs - zu bewahren. Die Achtung vor der W rde des Menschen kennzeichnete seinen Wertekanon, den er auch in Kriege einhielt. Indem Kaack seinen Protagonisten in dessen jeweilige politische und soziale Umwelt einbettet, legt er zugleich ein St ck Mentalit tsgeschichte der deutschen Marine in drei Epochen vor.

This book is primarily based on the research done by the Numerical Analysis Group at the Goethe-Universitat in Frankfurt/Main, and on material presented in several graduate courses by the author between 1977 and 1981. It is hoped that the text will be useful for graduate students and for scientists interested in studying a fundamental theoretical analysis of numerical methods along with its application to the most diverse classes of differential and integral equations. The text treats numerous methods for approximating solutions of three classes of problems: (elliptic) boundary-value problems, (hyperbolic and parabolic) initial value problems in partial differential equations, and integral equations of the second kind. The aim is to develop a unifying convergence theory, and thereby prove the convergence of, as well as provide error estimates for, the approximations generated by specific numerical methods. The schemes for numerically solving boundary-value problems are additionally divided into the two categories of finite difference methods and of projection methods for approximating their variational formulations.

Whilst the focus of the book is on Germany, extensive coverage is also given to Anabaptism in England, Switzerland, the Netherlands and elsewhere. This English edition includes a new introduction which considers the historiographical context of the book. The opening chapter has also been expanded to include a section on the emergence of Anabaptism in England.The Anabaptists has been fully revised since its publication in German, and takes account of the most recent historiography on the subject. It also includes a selection of primary sources together with a full listing of important Anabaptist works.

Though these island territories were colonized by the same two colonial powers—by the Spanish Empire and, after 1898, by the United States—research in the fields of history and the social sciences rarely draws links between these three contexts.Located at the intersection of Postcolonial Studies, Latin American Studies, Caribbean Studies, and History, this interdisciplinary volume brings together scholars from the US, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Philippines to examine the colonial legacies of the three island nations of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The mystery plays of medieval England have traditionally been analysed in ways which centre on the texts and their religious significance. Hans-Jurgen Diller's major study, first published in German, seeks to recover their dramatic potential by focusing on the function of language in conventional modes of speech, prayer, address and dialogue. He looks at speech and dramatic form in the plays to reveal new insights concerning spatial and temporal orientation, the expression of emotions, and the relationships between characters on stage, between actor and audience, and between the dramatic world and the ordinary world outside it. His analysis offers new ways of understanding the relationship of vernacular drama to its liturgical antecedents, and new means of distinguishing stylistically between the cycles and between the groups of plays they comprise.
This book introduces the quantum mechanics of classically chaotic systems, or quantum chaos for short.
