Originally published in 1964, this volume focuses on the history of England's relations with the Near East from the death of Canning until the day when Disraeli brought back 'peace with honour' from Berlin. The period begins with the British fleet's destruction of Turkish sea-power at Naarino and ends with its protection of the Turkish capital against Russia. The aim is not a study of diplomatic or naval history, but a general narrative in which these speical features are found side by side with a study of Oriental institutions and of Balkan nationalities.

Excerpt from Frederic the Great and Kaiser Joseph: An Episode of War Diplomacy in the Eighteenth Century The View taken by English diplomatists of the events of 1776 - 79 was, on the whole, a detached and impartial one, for it was to the interest of England to be neutral. In previous years she had been very hostile to Frederic, but now she became reconciled. Hence in these few years the English diplomatic despatches have something of the value which Ranke has claimed for those of Venice at an earlier date. They seize the central line of diplomatic tend ency and show the direction in which Europe as a whole was moving. Every other source - French, German, Russian, Austrian, Saxon, Bavarian - has been explored by one foreign historian or another, but the English comment still remained practically unknown to them. It seems to me that these despatches complete the picture and place the episodes of the time in their true relation to one another. Holbrook Hal

Farrar, Straus Giroux Inc

In Harold, the beloved actor Hal Holbrook presents an affecting memoir about his struggle to discover his true self, even as he learned to transform himself onstage. Abandoned by his mother and father when he was two, Holbrook and his two sisters commenced separate journeys of survival. Raised by his powerful grandfather, who died when Holbrook was twelve, Holbrook spent his childhood at boarding schools, visiting his father in an insane asylum and hoping his mother would suddenly surface in Hollywood. As World War II engulfed Europe, Holbrook began acting almost by accident. Through war, marriage, and the work of honing his craft, his fear of insanity and his fearlessness in the face of risk were channelled into discovering that the riskiest path of all-success as an actor-would be his birthright. The climb up that forbidding mountain was a lonely one. And how he achieved it - the cost to his wife and children and to his own conscience - is the dark side of the fame he would eventually earn by portraying the man his career would forever be most closely associated with: Mark Twain.

King Harold Godwineson is one of history's shadowy figures, known mainly for his defeat and death at the Battle of Hastings. His true status and achievements have been overshadowed by the events of October 1066 and by the bias imposed by the Norman victory. In truth, he deserves to be recalled as one of the greatest rulers. Harold: The Last Anglo-Saxon King sets out to correct this distorted image by presenting Harold's life in its proper context, offering the first full-length critical study of his career in the years leading up to 1066. Ian Walker's carefully researched critique allows the reader to realistically assess the lives of both Harold and his rival William, significantly enhancing our knowledge of both.

Harold!

This handsome book captures in words and pictures the powerful emotions that circled around one man in Chicago in the early 1980s: Harold Washington. More than one hundred pictures, from candid shots on the campaign trail to triumphant public appearances, give readers a window onto a man who won over an entire city. Washington's mayoral win represented a faltering of the previously all-powerful Chicago Machine, and his campaign was a part of a larger civil rights crusade that forged unity in the black community in Chicago. Antonio Dickey and Marc PoKempner were there with Washington throughout 1982-87, Dickey as his campaign and personal photographer and PoKempner on assignment for the ""New York Times"", ""People"", and ""Time"", capturing the force of his personality and the inspiration he brought to Chicago. Their photographs have become the definitive documentation of the Harold years and were featured in the Chicago Historical Society's 2003-2004 exhibit ""Harold Washington: The Man and the Movement."" They were there for his underdog rise, his win, his first term, and his untimely death just seven months into his second term. The year 2007 marks the twentieth anniversary of Washington's death, and this loving tribute in words and pictures will keep his message alive for future generations.
