C'est depuis Londres, en mars 1848, qu'Hector Berlioz d cide d'entreprendre la r daction de ses M moires. Il n'a alors pas encore quarante-cinq ans. Il lui reste vingt et un ans vivre; mais outre qu'il l'ignore, et quand bien m me sa sant vient de le tourmenter, rien ne lui permet de penser que ses jours sont compt s. Pourquoi prouve-t-il le besoin de se retourner sur sa vie afin d'en donner un r cit pour la post rit ? Intuition d'une rupture ou perte de confiance ? Nostalgie de la terre natale dans l'exil londonien, besoin de gagner sa vie ? Toutes ces raisons embrouill es contribuent marquer une lassitude; elles d terminent aussi un sursaut de conscience affirmer une oeuvre et une personne face l'imminence d'une disparition. L' chec de la cr ation de La Damnation de Faust l'Op ra-Comique en d cembre 1846 lui a peut- tre fourni le premier indice de ce risque. Moins parce que l'entreprise l'a ruin , que parce que le public cultiv de Paris s'est, montr indiff rent. La chute des Burgraves de Hugo avait mis en vidence, d s 1843, les signes d'un m me d clin. La mise en oeuvre des M moires ent rine ainsi un basculement historique qui cristallise les notions d j anciennes de nostalgie et d'incompr hension. Le temps de la fabrication d'une image h ro que et po tique du romantisme de 1830 se mat rialise dans le choix du genre litt raire.
