Heinz Halm's work presents a thorough and accessible discussion of the history, theology, and current state of this branch of Islam. Newly revised, Shi'ism includes updated information on the fate of the Shi'ite revolution in Iran as well as a new chapter on Iraq. Observing a tradition more than 1000 years old, Shi'ites represent 10 percent of the Muslim population, or 100 million people. Halm explores how Shi'ism differs from the rest of Islam, discussing the prominence of its authorities, the Imams, as well as its legal system, practices of worship, places of pilgrimages, and a religious ethos characterized by a fervor to suffer for the cause. Additionally, Halm provides a lucid survey of the various branches of Shi'ism, paying attention to their historical, organizational, and theological developments. The book also considers the appeal and impact of Imams in contemporary Shi'ism and their interpretation of the social and economic problems gripping the Islamic world.

A new edition of Heinz Halm's comprehensive survey of all the Shi'ite groups. It traces the development of all the individual branches from their common origins to their current status in the modern world. The dogmatic and organisational development of each of the various branches of Shi'ism is discussed and is placed in the context of their particular history. Special attention is given to the emergence of the Imamite 'clergy' and the social and political role which has enabled them to establish a revolutionary regime in Iran, and each chapter contains an invaluable bibliography giving easy access to other books and original sources in translation. Key Features: * each branch of Shi'ism placed in its own historical context * bibliographies at the end of each chapter divided into primary and secondary sources * includes chapters on all varieties of Shi'ism * New edition contains new material on the Shi'a in Iraq and on the Iranian Revolution, and up-dated bibliographies
Heinz Halm is an internationally renowned scholar of the Middle East. The Arabs, Heinz Halm’s masterful narrative, is now available in two versions: as a general reader and introductory text for college courses and, now, in an expanded version with a new 160-page annotated appendix of primary sources. The new source appendix, edited by Luke Yarbrough and Oded Zinger, greatly enhances the text’s value for teachers as well as for general readers. Some 40 primary source readings--ranging from Spain to Iraq, from classical antiquity to the 2011 Arab Spring, and from poetry and scripture to medieval economics and travelogue--provide a classroom-ready component for courses in history, area studies, and religious studies. Several of the readings occur here for the first time in translation; all have been chosen to give vivid and representative accounts of the Arabs’ history as told by those who experienced it. Taken together, they offer readers a glimpse into the vast, richly textured mosaic of texts that have been generated by and about the Arabs and encourage further exploration.
In the 9th century, a secret sect of the Isma‘ilis -- known in the Middle Ages under the name of Fatimids -- arose to play a prominent role in the history of the Near East. Their supreme head today is the Agha Khan. In this mesmerising book, Heinz Halm describes the early history of the Fatimids, from the founding and spread of the secret society to the rise of the caliphal dynasty to power in North Africa and the founding of Cairo, their capital.

Runorälläkkä 2022 jatkaa kolmen ystävyksen runoiluperinnettä raikkaasti poikkikulttuurisella otteella. Miehet kokoontuivat toisen kerran peräkkäin vuorokauden mittaiselle runomaratonille tarkoituksena tuottaa 100 runoa kirjan muotoon. Leimallista teksteille on matalan kynnyksen kirjalliset maistiaiset, jotka ilon kautta peilaavat rakkautta, luontoa ja tavallisen ihmisen mielenjuoksuja poikkeuksellisessa maailman ajassa.
Runorälläkkä on Pekka Halmeen ideoima vuosittainen tapahtuma, jossa kirjoitetaan 100 runoa yhden vuorokauden aikana.
Eri puolella Suomea 30.4.2021 /KL/PH/MH
Heinz Werner and Developmental Science

Heinz Werner (1890-1964) was one of the three key developmental psychologists of the 20th century – along with Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. This book is a new exploration of Werner’s ideas and their social contexts – in Vienna in his student years, in Hamburg up to 1933, followed by the years of transit as an immigrant to America at times of economic depression, finally culminating in his establishment of the prominent "Clark tradition" in American psychology in the 1950s. The book offers an in-depth analysis of Werner’s ideas as they were originally formulated in Vienna and Hamburg, and how they were changed by North American influences. Werner’s pivotal role between European and American intellectual traditions is illuminated through the use of rich memories of his former students, unique documents from Werner’s personal library at Clark, and analyses of links with other European traditions in philosophy and biological sciences. The European period (prior to 1933) in Werner’s academic life is found to be definitive for Werner’s contributions to science. The ideas developed in his early career continued in the form of a productive empirical research program in the 1950s at Clark. An analysis of the social-intellectual climate of the development of psychology in America in the 1950s is a special feature of this book that will further enhance an understanding of Werner’s unique contribution This book will be of interest to developmental psychologists, sociologists and historians of science, philosophers, practitioners working in special education and neuropsychology, and for general readers interested in the history of ideas and life courses of scientists.
Heinz Kohut's work represents an important departure from the Freudian tradition of psychoanalysis. A founder of the Self Psychology movement in America, he based his practice on the belief that narcissistic vulnerabilities play a significant part in the suffering that brings people for treatment. Written predominantly for a psychoanalytic audience Kohut's work is often difficult to interpret. Siegel uses examples from his own practice to show how Kohut's innovative theories can be applied to other forms of treatment.

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series, Volume 66. This publication presents the collected works of Heinz-Wolfram Kasemir, a prolific researcher in many branches of atmospheric electricity, with commentaries by Lothar Ruhnke and Vladislav Mazur. Because many of his papers were not reviewed by his peers, it is a rare opportunity to experience the real thinking of a prominent scientist in the field of atmospheric electricity. Several of his contributions stand out as most significant for the development of this science: Kasemir developed a physically-sound theory about the transfer of charges from thunderstorms to global fair-weather areas.Kasemir’s theory of atmospheric current flow influenced calculations of (1) the electric field and current pattern of cloud charges in the presence of conductivity increasing with altitude, (2) the time-function for a lightning electric field that changes from electrostatic to one driven by conductivity, and (3) the effect of conductivity changes at cloud boundaries on their screening charges, and consequently, on surface electric fields.Kasemir’s revolutionary idea that lightning develops as a bi-directional leader with a zero-net charge, proposed in 1950, had a major impact on the development of lightning physics. Kasemir’s analysis of influence charge on lightning channels in a potential field opened up the area of the physical modeling of lightning processes. This project was generously supported by the National Science Foundation through AGS-1138919. Thank you to NSF for its contribution in making this collection available to the public.
