To inhabitants of the Gulf Coast region of Louisiana, food is much more than nourishment. The acts of gathering, preparing, and sharing food are ways to raise children, bond with friends, and build community. In Bayou Harvest: Subsistence Practice in Coastal Louisiana, Shana Walton and Helen A. Regis examine how coastal residents deploy self-reliance and care for each other through harvesting and sharing food. Pulling from four years of fieldwork and study, Walton and Regis explore harvesting, hunting, and foraging by Native Americans, Cajuns, and other Bayou residents. This engagement with Indigenous thinkers and their neighbors yields a multifaceted view of subsistence in Louisiana. Readers will learn about coastal residents’ love for the land and water, their deep connections to place, and how they identify with their food and game heritage. The book also delves into their worries about the future, particularly storms, pollution, and land loss in the coastal region. Using a set of narratives that documents the everyday food practices of these communities, the authors conclude that subsistence is not so much a specific tasks like peeling shrimp or harvesting sassafras, but is fundamentally about what these activities mean to the people of the coast. Drawn together with immersive writing, this book explores a way of life that is vibrant, built on deep historical roots, and profoundly threatened by the gulf’s shrinking coast.

Congregations and faith-based organizations have become key participants in America’s welfare revolution. Recent legislation has expanded the social welfare role of religious communities, thus revealing a pervasive lack of faith in purely economic responses to poverty. Charitable Choices is an ethnographic study of faith-based poverty relief in 30 congregations in the rural south. Drawing on in-depth interviews and fieldwork in Mississippi faith communities, it examines how religious conviction and racial dynamics shape congregational benevolence. Mississippi has long had the nation's highest poverty rate and was the first state to implement a faith-based welfare reform initiative. The book provides a grounded and even-handed treatment of congregational poverty relief rather than abstract theory on faith-based initiatives. The volume examines how congregations are coping with national developments in social welfare policy and reveals the strategies that religious communities utilize to fight poverty in their local communities. By giving particular attention to the influence of theological convictions and organizational dynamics on religious service provision, it identifies both the prospects and pitfalls likely to result from the expansion of charitable choice.

How ritualized public ceremonies affirm or challenge cultural identities associated with the American South* A Choice Outstanding Academic Title"From the jazz funeral processions in the streets of New Orleans to the annual Natchez Pilgrimage in Mississippi and the Scottish Highland games atop Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, the reader is exposed to a diverse southern culture, or heritage, that is often overlooked by many people, both within and outside the South. The reality of a southern culture based in Mexican heritage or a celebration of [a] Southeastern tribe's heritage through the powwow helps deconstruct the myth of a solid southern culture as one that is simply portrayed as black and white."--Florida Historical Quarterly"The ambition Celeste Ray sets out in her introduction is to show how these groups are not only in the South but of it, how they interpret their diverse identities as Southern--put another way, to answer a question that arises in one noteworthy piece, why do Indians in North Carolina eat barbecue pork and collard greens at their powwows?"--Journal of American Ethnic History"Thought-provoking and well-crafted, Southern Heritage on Display is an innovative and important resource for regional studies and scholarship on public display."--Journal of Folklore ResearchW. J. Cash's 1941 observation that "there are many Souths and many cultural traditions among them" is certainly validated by this book. Although the Civil War and its "lost cause" tradition continues to serve as a cultural root paradigm in celebrations, both uniting and dividing loyalties, southerners also embrace a panoply of public rituals--parades, cook-offs, kinship homecomings, church assemblies, music spectacles, and material culture exhibitions--that affirm other identities. From the Appalachian uplands to the Mississippi Delta, from Kentucky bluegrass to Carolina piedmont, southerners celebrate in festivals that showcase their diverse cultural backgrounds and their mythic beliefs about themselves. The ten essays of this cohesive, interdisciplinary collection present event-centered research from various fields of study--anthropology, geography, history, and literature--to establish a rich, complex picture of the stereotypically "Solid South." Topics include the Mardi Gras Indian song cycle as a means of expressing African-American identity in New Orleans; powwow performances and Native American traditions in southeast North Carolina; religious healings in southern Appalachian communities; Mexican Independence Day festivals in central Florida; and, in eastern Tennessee, bonding ceremonies of melungeons who share Indian, Scots Irish, Mediterranean, and African ancestry. Seen together, these public heritage displays reveal a rich "creole" of cultures that have always been a part of southern life and that continue to affirm a flourishing regionalism. This book will be valuable to students and scholars of cultural anthropology, American studies, and southern history; academic and public libraries; and general readers interested in the American South. It contributes a vibrant, colorful layer of understanding to the continuously emerging picture of complexity in this region historically depicted by simple stereotypes.

Helen Twelvetrees, Perfect IngenueRediscovering a 1930s Movie Star and Her 32 FilmsAt her peak, Helen Twelvetrees was leading lady to legends like John Barrymore and Spencer Tracy. Other early co-stars who were billed below her included Joan Blondell, John Wayne, and Clark Gable. Twelvetrees broke out in Her Man (1930) and affirmed her stardom in Millie (1931). Her ten-year Hollywood career is highlighted by a run of starring roles in pre-Code era melodramas, but Helen Twelvetrees kept working long after movie audiences had forgotten her. She lost momentum for a variety of reasons. External factors such as typecasting, studio anarchy, and Production Code enforcement, combined with an independent attitude that spurred inconvenient headlines and whispers of temperament are among those that kept her career from progressing. At her peak she chose to follow natural impulses and start a family, but in terms of her career, her pregnancy couldn't have come at a worse time. When she returned to the screen it was with a new studio, and the types of films she was known for were not as popular as they had been before her maternity leave. Afterward, time itself may have been Helen Twelvetrees' greatest enemy: one can only remain an ingenue for so long. Helen Twelvetrees, Perfect Ingenue is one-half biography, one-half film retrospective. Presented here are the life, loves, and career of an unexpectedly modern woman. An extensive collection of notes supports corrections and new findings about Twelvetrees, including her accurate birth-date and a previously unreported marriage, while also supplying additional background about each of her thirty-two movies: the good, the bad, and the lost.Foreword by Dan Van Neste, author of The Whistler: Stepping Into the Shadows.Illustrated with still photographs from the author's personal collection.

Oral health and facial aesthetics are two fundamental conditions to be achieved by dental rehabilitations. To this end, the dental surgeon can use prosthetic restorations whose adaptation is essential for clinical success. The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the internal adaptation between two groups of ceramic frameworks used in fixed partial dentures on implants. One group was made by milling with zirconia-reinforced blocks (ZIR) and the other by injection using lithium disilicate-reinforced blocks (DIS). The evaluation methodology was based on the Weight Technique, through the replica of the cementation film, and estimation of its thickness. To this end, addition silicone was inserted into the interior of the infraestructures, and these were seated on the prosthetic pillar. The resulting film was removed, its mass measured and applied in a formula, thus obtaining an estimate of the average thickness of the cement film. Given the results obtained, it is believed that the Weight Technique, after the proper standardization, can be employed in clinical practice.

Helen: a tale By: Maria Edgeworth, Novel: Helen is a novel by Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849). It was written in 1834, late in the writer's life.
Helen is a novel by Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849). It was written in 1834, late in the writer's life. Helen tells the story of a young orphan, Helen Stanley, whose guardian, Dean Stanley, has squandered his fortune and left Helen without means of support. She is forced to take up residence with the local vicar, whose wife is astonished that none of the Stanleys' aristocratic friends have offered a refuge to her. Eventually, however, the Davenant family returns from abroad and invite Helen to their daughter's new home, Clarendon Park. (Cecilia Davenant has just married General Clarendon.) Helen journeys to join her dear friend Cecilia (a charming socialite), and the first half of the novel describes Helen's experiences among the most fortunate of Britain's elite under the tutelage of Lady Davenant, who in some ways favors Helen over her own daughter Cecilia. In the second and more dramatic half of the novel, Lady Davenant departs with her husband, who has been named ambassador at the Court of St. Petersburg, Russia. Helen is left to the care of General Clarendon and Cecilia. By this time she is engaged to Granville Beauclerc, a young and handsome man who is another of Lady Davenant's favorites. All does not run smoothly for Helen, however. Before her marriage, Cecilia has carried on an amorous correspondence with Colonel d'Aubigny, a worthless rou who has since died. These letters reappear in a packet addressed to Cecilia's husband. Cecilia implores Helen to act as if the letters were addressed to her rather than to Cecilia. Helen, from misguided devotion to her friend and gratitude for Cecilia's kind hospitality, agrees to the deception. This first step leads to more and more serious consequences, until finally Helen's reputation is in tatters. Beauclerc is forced to fight a duel in defense of his fianc e, after which he must flee from England. Cecilia still refuses to recognize the letters as hers, out of fear of losing her own husband if she admits to the correspondence. The General is convinced that Helen is faithless. She refuses to stay where she is not respected and chooses exile in Wales with the General's sister, where she becomes dangerously ill. Even the birth of Cecilia's first child, a son, does not encourage her to confess to her husband, and Helen gives up all hope of exoneration. The d nouement comes when Lady Davenant, also dangerously ill, returns to London at the same time as the General finally discovers his wife's deception and vows to separate from Cecilia for life. Helen's character is redeemed, Beauclerc returns to England when his adversary recovers from his wounds, and the novel ends happily for all the protagonists with Lady Davenant saying that she is "now, and not till now, happy--perfectly happy in Love and Truth "....... Maria Edgeworth (1 January 1768 - 22 May 1849) was a prolific Anglo-Irish writer of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe. She held advanced views, for a woman of her time, on estate management, politics and education, and corresponded with some of the leading literary and economic writers, including Sir Walter Scott and David Ricardo. Early life: Maria Edgeworth was born at Black Bourton, Oxfordshire. She was the second child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth (who eventually fathered 22 children by four wives) and Anna Maria Edgeworth; Maria was thus an aunt of Francis Ysidro Edgeworth. She spent her early years with her mother's family in England, until her mother's death when Maria was five. When her father married his second wife Honora Sneyd in 1773, she went with him to his estate, Edgeworthstown, in County Longford, Ireland. Maria was sent to Mrs. Lattafi re's school in Derby after Honora fell ill in 1775....

GOING TO...Helen A. Handbasket(If you are not chuckling...please look around and make sure you're alone. Okay...Step 1: Slowly read the pseudonym out loud. If you're still not at least smiling...take a deep breath, hold it...and exhale. Repeat Step 1. Now you got it. I thank you..."Helen" thanks you.)A revelation of Biblical proportions concerning the calculated and evil mistranslation of one Greek word in the fifth century promoting the myth (lie), of "eternal" conscious torment in Hell...woven through this intriguing tale is a memoir by a: follower of Christ, Vietnam Veteran-(fun-loving combat medic survivor), former alcoholic/drug addict, scribbling scribe, guitar player, often struggling, yet faithful servant of the Lord...and grateful recipient of His infinite Love and Grace. What the...Hell?Hell is the place where we "reap what we sow." The author believes all the sins of the world were purchased through the Blood of Christ...the repentant know Salvation through God's grace alone, for non-believers and the wicked, Salvation comes through the various levels of Hell: chastisement, despair, torment, terror, physical suffering...many believe, death is the final outcome. With the obvious exception of death, the author contends that eventually, the vast majority, if not all, will happily "bow the knee" before they receive the gift of Divine reconciliation. The author will prove, (like so many silenced by the Church over the centuries), that Hell is not eternal. "Eternal conscious torment," taught by the Church since the fifth century is a lie that has destroyed the lives of millions. How could this myth be manufactured and believed by so many Christians for sixteen centuries based on something so blatantly illogical as Biblical "inerrancy?" OF COURSE Scripture is God-breathed...but to preach mistakes were not even possible by overworked scribes (that used copies, of copies, of copies), for 400 YEARS before we had substantial records, is the height of folly."The majority is always wrong; the minority is rarely right." -Henrik IbsenThe truly God-Breathed miracle isn't the myth of absolute inerrancy, (perpetuated by many "Christians" who sadly rejoice in their exclusive salvation...made sweeter by the eternal suffering of others), it is this: through endless corrupt and nefarious motives, the Gospels, the beating heart of the Good News, remained intact. Why would "men of God," go to such lengths to inject terrorism into Scripture? "Helen" has the answers.Do we believe God...or, Satan, the author of all lies and slander?Christian writer and speaker, Rick Adair, reveals how this lie came to be...his conclusions-coupled with his warm, yet madcap sense of humor-will have Christian's, and secular folks alike, chuckling and rejoicing in the depth of God's love...seeing clearly, perhaps for the first time, that our Father in Heaven would never even consider sending His children into "eternal" conscious torment. God is LOVE. Period.
