Women In Late Medieval and Reformation Europe 1200-1550
The period from c. 500 to 1200 comprises the formative centuries in European history after the fall of the Roman Empire in the west. Societies had to live through political, social, economic and religious challenges. Half the population, though, also had to labour under additional constraints imposed by the prevalent gender theories, which carried a mixture of inherited Judeo-Christian tradition and classical medical and legal custom through the period.Helen M. Jewell provides a lively survey of western European women's activities and experiences during this timespan. The core chapters investigate:- the function of women in the countryside and towns- the role of women in the ruling and landholding classes- women within the context of religion. This practical centre of the book is embedded in an analysis of contemporary, usually male-voiced, gender theories and society's expectations of women. Several individuals who vastly exceeded these expectations, crashing through the 'glass ceilings' of their day, are brought together in a fascinating final chapter.Combining a historiographical survey of trends over the last thirty years with more recent scholarship, this is the ideal introductory guide for anyone with an interest in women's history from the Dark Age through to the early Medieval period.
Women In Dark Age And Early Medieval Europe c.500-1200
The period 1200-1550 opened in a time of population expansion but went on to suffer the demographically cataclysmic effects of the plague, beginning with the Black Death of 1347-51. The period dawned with a confident papacy and the Albigensian crusade against heretics and ended with the Catholic church torn apart by the Protestant Reformation. Huge challenges were affecting society in various ways, but they did not always affect men and women in the same ways.Helen M. Jewell provides a lively survey of western European women's activities and experiences during this timeframe. The core chapters investigate:- the function of women in the countryside and towns- the role of women in the ruling and landholding classes- women within the context of religion. This practical centre of the book is embedded in an analysis of the gender theories inherited from the earlier Middle Ages which continued to underpin laws which restricted women's activity, an education system which offered them inferior institutional provision, and a church which denied them ministry. Three individuals who vastly exceeded these expectations, crashing through the 'glass ceilings' of their day, are brought together in a fascinating final chapter.Combining a historiographical survey of trends over the last thirty years with more recent scholarship, this is as indispensable introduction for anyone with an interest in women's history from the late Medieval period through to the Reformation.

This exceptional period of design covers the neo-Gothic and historicist designs of the mid- to late nineteenth century, the groundbreaking work of British Arts and Crafts designers, sinuous curves influenced by the European Art Nouveau movement and the structural modernity of the 1930s.The collection contains jewellery by some of the finest historicist designers, including the Castellani and Giuliano families and John Brogden, as well as a spectacular decanter by William Burges. There are important pieces of jewellery and silver by the most famous of Arts and Crafts designers, including C.R. Ashbee, Henry Wilson, Gilbert Marks and John Paul Cooper.Unique pieces designed by the artist Charles Ricketts hold a special place in the history of queer art in Britain, having been designed for his friends Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper, a couple known collectively as Michael Field. Modernist silver is represented by leaders of the field Omar Ramsden and H.G. Murphy. This beautifully illustrated volume reproduces 70 of the Museum’s most important pieces from this period, many previously unpublished, with comparative illustrations of some of the original designs. Importantly, the book is arranged chronologically by designer and includes biographies, a description of their work and how it changed over time, as well as commentary about the specific works in the Museum’s collection. The book brings together for the first time the Fitzwilliam’s exceptionally fine holdings of jewellery and metalwork from this highly popular and fruitful period of design.

Work Attitudes and Behaviours of Employees in Nigerian Organisations
This book identifies the work attitudes and behaviour of Nigerian workers as well as determine their sources. The desire to conduct the study derived from the disquiet among members of the Nigerian Public that Nigerian workers, particularly those employed in the public sector of the economy exhibit negative work attitudes and behaviours. The overriding objectives of the study were therefore: First to establish whether the public sector worker displays more negative work attitudes and behaviours than the worker employed in the private sector of the economy. Second, the study sought to identify the sources of those negative work attitudes and behaviours with the aim of suggesting methods of improvement. The investigation was carried out in three Nigerian organizations, a private sector enterprise, a public sector organization and a government parastatal. The main purpose was to show which establishment exhibited most negative work attitudes. The study was centered on managerial personnel only as this cadre of staff is, to a large extent, responsible for the work attitudes and behaviours displayed by other employees.

After attaining approval from the governor to form a city on April 21, 1821, Gainesville, Georgia, transformed into a commercial and resort area that soon attracted a street railway. When its line was expanded in 1877, Green Street eventually became one of the most desirable places to raise a family. Even after a fire nearly destroyed the town in 1851, its determined residents persevered. In 1975, the Green Street homes were placed in the Green Street Historic District and on the National Registry. Within a fascinating presentation, Helen Martin looks beyond the jewels and grandeur to capture the past and offer a glimpse into the versatile architectural designs of North Green Street. Some of the homes described include the Martin-Matthews-Norton house built at (58) 393 Green Street between 1910 and 1911; the Wallace House at 417 Green Street, constructed at around 1900; and the Nalley Martin house, one of the last homes erected in 1938. Included are historical photographs and additional details regarding the twenty-five homes that fell in the name of progress. Euripides

Outstepping the literal bounds of genre, Euripides' Helen has been referred to by scholars as both a tragedy and a comedy. In this sensitive new translation by James Michie and Colin Leach, Euripides' fragile structure of subtlety, in both timing and tone, is beautifully preserved. From the myth ascribed to the Sicilian poet Stesichorus, Helen plays on the question of two Helens: one a phantom in Troy, and the other the real Helen who remained in Egypt. A myriad of reversals, thought-provoking examples of differing orders of reality, and juxtapositions of opposites, allow Euripides to comment on the futility of war and the distinction between appearance and reality.
