The former malaria-infested Pontine swamps in Lazio, south of Rome, had been almost deserted for centuries when Benito Mussolini in 1928 by law decided to drain and cultivate this fertile soil. The enormous project was called Agro Pontino. In the years between 1932 and 1938 five new towns were built in Lazio. Eighteen new villages and 3000 new farms were also created. This in-depth study concerns planning and building of one of these towns, Sabaudia, the administrative centre in the region, and its surrounding area. Today this is a prosperous area with a growing population. The author shows in this book how Agro Pontino was realised.
Embracing individualism and antistatism, the United States traditionally has favored a limited role for government. Yet state intervention both against and on behalf of labor has a long history, culminating in the labor law reforms of the New Deal. How do we account for this irony? And how do we explain why, between World War I and the Great Depression, another leading industrial nation with similar ideological commitments, Great Britain, developed a different model? By comparing the United States and Britain, Larry G. Gerber makes clear that, in the development of industrial relations policies, ideology was secondary to economic realities—the structure of business, the market system, and the configuration of unions. Nonetheless, industrial policy developed within the broader context of the transition from the individualistic laissez-faire capitalism of the nineteenth century to a collectivist political economy in which the state and organized groups played increasingly important roles while pluralist and corporatist models contended for influence. In Britain, where most business enterprises remained comparatively small, collective bargaining between workers and management became the norm. In the United States, however, large-scale corporations quickly rose to dominance. Eager to retain control of the production process, corporate elites resisted negotiating with workers and occasionally called upon the state to resolve labor crises. American workers, who initially opposed state involvement, eventually turned to the state for assistance as well. The New Deal administration responded with a series of new labor policies designed to balance the interests of employers and employees alike. Since state intervention did nothing to permanently change employers' hostility toward unions, the New Deal legislation was short-lived. Gerber's broad study of this momentous period in labor history helps explain the conundrum of a nation with a typically limited government whose intense intervention in labor relations caused long-lasting effects.
Commanding a vast historiography of slavery and emancipation, Aline Helg reveals as never before how significant numbers of enslaved Africans across the entire Western Hemisphere managed to free themselves hundreds of years before the formation of white-run abolitionist movements. Her sweeping view of resistance and struggle covers more than three centuries, from early colonization to the American and Haitian revolutions, Spanish American independence, and abolition in the British Caribbean. Helg not only underscores the agency of those who managed to become ""free people of color"" before abolitionism took hold but also assesses in detail the specific strategies they created and utilized. While recognizing the powerful forces supporting slavery, Helg articulates four primary liberation strategies: flight and marronage; manumission by legal document; military service, for men, in exchange for promised emancipation; and revolt—along with a willingness to exploit any weakness in the domination system. Helg looks at such actions at both individual and community levels and in the context of national and international political movements. Bringing together the broad currents of liberal abolitionism with an original analysis of forms of manumission and marronage, Slave No More deepens our understanding of how enslaved men, women, and even children contributed to the slow demise of slavery.

With the economic crisis that began in 2008, a long-standing trend toward increased regulation is becoming a flood. The clamor for improved enterprise risk management and the complexity of multinational compliance present executives with a dramatically new array of challenges. Governance should offer solutions, but it is clear that yesterday’s governance practices aren’t up to the task. In both design and implementation, they are too disconnected and incomplete to fully address our complex compliance and risk management puzzle. Executives get only fragmented views of their true business performance, and inefficiencies drive up costs. The consequences of inadequate governance were demonstrated in the economic meltdown of 2008. As the world struggles to recover from that crisis, business is now faced with a confusing array of evolving regulations, the challenge of managing compliance across multinational organizations and a new imperative for risk management that is coordinated across the enterprise. It’s clear that yesterday’s governance practices don’t meet today’s need for centralized controls, integrated compliance and risk management and greater transparency. The need for organizations to change—and change now—is clear. Under Control captures decades of business governance experience from many of the leading authorities at CA, Inc. This book sets out not only to explain the essential challenges of effective business governance, but to help you build solutions for your organization based on lessons learned at CA from its customers and in its own corporate structure. From governing the organization’s policies as a whole instead of in silos, to a department-by-department look at the role and impact of governance, to governing your green initiatives, to the role of the board of directors, to the importance of risk management, this book lays out some of the strategies and processes that may help yourorganization manage its risk and regulatory requirements. It is clear that the governance standards in the past were inadequate, and that risks have not been properly assessed or understood. This book is a first step in solving this problem so that your organization is prepared and able to respond and thrive in today’s rapidly evolving environment. Under Control is the first book published in the new CAPress imprint, a joint publishing program between Apress and CA Inc. “One of the defining factors of the first decade of the 21st century has been the increase of regulation and governance. To explain these trends, and the various best practices for ensuring governance, enterprise IT management solutions provider CA Inc. enlisted more than a dozen subject matter experts from its ranks to contribute content. The resulting book explores the need for broad governance, different areas where governance is important, and various ways for organizations to manage and implement compliance, including IT governance, project portfolio management, information governance and sustainability management. The book, while largely vendor-neutral, draws on CA's experience creating governance solutions as well as managing its own governance issues.” —Aaron Smith, Projects@Work
Praise for Richard Williams' Helga Williams' range, depth, and downright virtuosity are rarely matched: "how beautiful / he is she / says & / she is / a mirror / never veiled." -John Cutaia Helga is about living life as it can be, and is meant to be lived--in awareness and love, in wakefulness and dreaminess, in togetherness and autonomy. There is a sense of dwelling on the horizon, peeking over, never giving in to fear, never tumbling out of the magic and fullness of being. -David Jewell, editor of Raw Paw's Mind Maze This gentle, loving book-of moments and moment-is a layered fountain, fashioned to replenish. There is beauty in art with purity of purpose; these poems and photos cleanse and vivify us, as they invite us into a joy at once private and eternal. -Michael Fitzgerald-Clarke, Townsville, Australia If you believe poems are prayers, join Richard Williams on his knees "pulling the petals of time apart," singing "I have but one thing to do today, be in love." -James McGrath, author of At the Edgelessness of Light, Speaking with Magpies, and The Sun is a Wandering Hunter Wedded to the immediacy of a 21st century affair of the heart, Williams' short line lengths are pointillist jabs at our consciousness; qualia jell into complete thoughts and we are left with our own array of impressions to consider. -Michael Gilmore, author of Reckless Astronomy Williams says, "he loves more than what is found," and that only "I fear not being real." We are reassured, however, early on in "psalms" that "what you truly need / will never leave." -Connie L. Williams, author of Dancing Backwards in Texas

Quite literally there wasn't even a hair left. I didn't even recognize my own mother till I heard her voice . . .In 1941, aged 12, Helga Weiss, her mother and father were forced to say goodbye to their home, their relatives and all that they knew, and were interned in the Nazi concentration camp of Terezín. For the next three years, Helga documented her experiences there, and those of her friends and family, in a diary. Then they were sent to Auschwitz, and the diary was left behind, hidden in a wall.Helga was one of a tiny number of Jewish children from Prague to survive the holocaust. After she returned home, she eventually managed to retrieve her diary and completed the journal of her experiences. The result is one of the most vivid first-hand accounts of the Holocaust ever to have been recovered. In 1939, Helga Weiss was a young Jewish schoolgirl in Prague. Along with some 45,000 Jews living in the city, Helga s family endured the first wave of the Nazi invasion: her father was denied work; she was forbidden from attending regular school. As Helga witnessed the increasing Nazi brutality, she began documenting her experiences in a diary. In 1941, Helga and her parents were sent to the concentration camp of Terezin. There, Helga continued to write with astonishing insight about her daily life: the squalid living quarters, the cruel rationing of food, and the executions as well as the moments of joy and hope that persisted in even the worst conditions. In 1944, Helga and her family were sent to Auschwitz. Before she left, Helga s uncle, who worked in the Terezin records department, hid her diary and drawings in a brick wall. Miraculously, he was able to reclaim them for her after the war. Of the 15,000 children brought to Terezin and later deported to Auschwitz, only 100 survived. Helga was one of them. Reconstructed from her original notebooks, the diary is presented here in its entirety. With an introduction by Francine Prose, a revealing interview between translator Neil Bermel and Helga, and the artwork Helga made during her time at Terezin, Helga's Diary stands as a vivid and utterly unique historical document."
