"Stop and smell the roses." That old saying is very true. I hope this story inspires you to slow down, take your time, and enjoy the scenery. We all seem to be in such a hurry that we forget to notice the beauty around us. This story was inspired by my oldest daughter, Jeanneen, when she was a little girl and told me to slow down one day when we were in the car driving.Look for his other book, Wonderful

Tallinn ’67 Jazz Festival: Myths and Memories explores the legendary 1967 jazz gathering that centered Tallinn, Estonia as the jazz capital of the USSR and marked both the pinnacle of a Soviet jazz awakening as well as the end of a long series of evolutionary jazz festivals in Estonia. This study offers new insights into what was the largest Soviet jazz festival of its time through an abundance of collected materials – including thousands of pages of archival documents, more than a hundred hours of interviews and countless media reviews and photographs – while grappling with the constellation of myths integral to jazz discourse in an attempt to illuminate ‘how it really was’. Accounts from musicians, jazz fans, organisers and listeners bring renewed life to this transcultural event from more than half a century ago, framed by scholarly discussions contextualizing the festival within the closed conditions of the Cold War. Tallinn ’67 Jazz Festival details the lasting international importance of this confluence of Estonian, Soviet and American jazz and the ripple effects it spread throughout the world.

Ever since the English settled in America, extreme poverty and the inability of individuals to support themselves and their families have been persistent problems. In the early nineteenth century, many communities established almshouses, or "poorhouses," in a valiant but ultimately failed attempt to assist the destitute, including the sick, elderly, unemployed, mentally ill and orphaned, as well as unwed mothers, petty criminals and alcoholics. This work details the rise and decline of poorhouses in Massachusetts, painting a portrait of life inside these institutions and revealing a history of constant political and social turmoil over issues that dominate the conversation about welfare recipients even today. The first study to address the role of architecture in shaping as well as reflecting the treatment of paupers, it also provides photographs and histories of dozens of former poorhouses across the state, many of which still stand.

Immigration, Citizenship and Insecurity: An Australian Story explores how Australia’s policies on migration and nationality have shaped citizenship and social inclusion. The book examines the historical and contemporary intersections of citizenship, migration and insecurity, analysing key issues such as the prioritisation of economic utility in migration policy, cultural expectations placed on newcomers and the role of migrants in political debate. It critically assesses Australia’s responses to challenges such as demographic ageing, cultural diversity and erosion of political authority. The impact of emergency measures during the COVID-19 pandemic is also explored, revealing the fragility of citizenship protections in times of crisis. This book is an essential resource for scholars, policy-makers and professionals in migration studies, political science and public policy, as well as anyone interested in the evolving dynamics of citizenship and migration in Australia and beyond.

The Demographic Transformations of Citizenship examines how attempts by contemporary states to govern demographic anxieties are shaping ideas about citizenship both as a boundary-maintaining mechanism and as an ideal of equal membership. These anxieties, while most often centred upon immigration, also stem from other demographic changes unfolding in contemporary states - most notably, the long-standing trend towards lower birth rates and consequent population ageing. With attention to such topics as control over borders, national identity, gender roles, family life and changing stages of life, Askola examines the impact of demographic changes, including but not limited to immigration. Drawing from a variety of disciplines, including law, demography, and sociology, this book discusses how efforts to manage demographic anxieties are profoundly altering ideas about citizenship and belonging.
