Narrative medicine is a fresh discipline of health care that helps patients and health professionals to tell and listen to the complex and unique stories of illness. The Principles and Practice of Narrative Medicine expresses the collective experience and discoveries of the originators of the field. Arising at Columbia University in 2000 from roots in the humanities and patient-centered care, narrative medicine draws patients, doctors, nurses, therapists, and health activists together to re-imagine a health care based on trust and trustworthiness, humility, and mutual recognition. Over a decade of education and research has crystallized the goals and methods of narrative medicine, leading to increasingly powerful means to improve the care that patients receive. The methods described in this book harness creativity and insight to help the professionals in being with patients, not just to diagnose and treat them but to bear witness to what they undergo. Narrative medicine training in literary theory, philosophy, narrative ethics, and the creative arts increases clinicians' capacity to perceive the turmoil and suffering borne by patients and to help them to cohere or endure the chaos of illness. Narrative medicine has achieved an international reputation and reach. Many health care settings adopt methods of narrative medicine in teaching and practice. Through the Master of Science in Narrative Medicine graduate program and health professions school curricula at Columbia University, more and more clinicians and scholars have obtained the rigorous training necessary to practice and teach narrative medicine. Der vorliegende Briefwechsel zwischen Philipp Jakob Spener (1635-1705), dem Begründer des lutherischen Pietismus, und August Hermann Francke (1663-1727), der den Pietismus zu einer religiös-sozialen Reformbewegung mit gesamtgesellschaftlichem Anspruch ausprägte, ist nicht nur eine zentrale Quelle für die Etablierung des hallischen Pietismus mit den Franckeschen Anstalten und für die Gründung der Universität Halle. Die in der Kommentierung zusammengetragenen Informationen machen deutlich, dass schon die frühen Hallenser Aktivitäten Franckes nicht denkbar waren ohne das oft spannungsreiche Zusammenspiel von pietistischen Reformvorhaben und brandenburg-preußischer Politik. Auf der Basis der Edition lässt sich zudem theologiegeschichtlich konkretisieren, wie sich die Spenersche "Hoffnung besserer Zeiten" bei Francke mit innerweltlichem Realismus verband und zu "Projekten" formte, die die Realität auf eine Utopie hin zu überwinden suchten. Konkret fassbar werden diese "Projekte" in der Entstehung eines internationalen pietistischen Kommunikationsnetzes, in dem missionarische Aktivität, Diplomatie und Kommerz eine selbstverständliche Synthese eingingen. Der Briefwechsel macht somit anthropologische und soziologische Konstellationen deutlich, die für die Frage nach den Proprien dessen, was theologie- und geistesgeschichtlich als 'Pietismus' bezeichnet werden kann, generell aufschlussreich sind.

St Edmund was medieval England's patron saint, and at his abbey, two major Latin miracle collections were compiled: one in the 1090s by Herman the Archdeacon, an historian trained in the schools of Lorraine; the other c. 1100 by an anonymous hagiographer who rewrote and expanded Herman's work. Herman's Miracles, an important text for the history of the realm and East Anglia in particular, is edited and translated here in its full fifty chapters for the first time, along with a shorter version intended for wider circulation. The second miracle collection, never before in print, is also presented for the first time and attributed to the Flemish hagiographer Goscelin of Saint-Bertin. Together the collections illustrate a rapid turnover of hagiography, connected to a change of leadership at the abbey of Bury St Edmunds. These works illustrate the evolution of historical writing, applied to the affairs of an exceptional international cult. The introduction revises the history of Bury St Edmunds from its foundations to c. 1100, rejecting old assumptions, adding to our knowledge of Herman's background, and proposing a context and attribution for the second collection which will alter the debate on Goscelin's career. A poem attacking Bishop Herbert Losinga (1091-1119) for simony is also included, edited from previously undiscovered textual witnesses, and linked to Herman and the factional divisions behind the two miracle collections. This volume makes the subject accessible to the full range of scholars interested in Edmund and Anglo-Norman England by providing editions and translations for the first time. Its arguments clear up much of the confusion surrounding the history of the cult and the abbey. It will remain invaluable to literary scholars and historians alike.
