Even before the Hebrews passed on their legend of the tree of knowledge, humans were collecting seeds and striplings from trees for shade, to cultivate fruit, and to worship as deities of natural forces. In Shade and Ornamental Trees Hui-Lin Li traces this relationship across the continents and over time to relay an organic history of the world's civilizations.

This book aims to increase the visibility of data science in real-world, which differs from what you learn from a typical textbook. Many aspects of day-to-day data science work are almost absent from conventional statistics, machine learning, and data science curriculum. Yet these activities account for a considerable share of the time and effort for data professionals in the industry. Based on industry experience, this book outlines real-world scenarios and discusses pitfalls that data science practitioners should avoid. It also covers the big data cloud platform and the art of data science, such as soft skills. The authors use R as the primary tool and provide code for both R and Python. This book is for readers who want to explore possible career paths and eventually become data scientists. This book comprehensively introduces various data science fields, soft and programming skills in data science projects, and potential career paths. Traditional data-related practitioners such as statisticians, business analysts, and data analysts will find this book helpful in expanding their skills for future data science careers. Undergraduate and graduate students from analytics-related areas will find this book beneficial to learn real-world data science applications. Non-mathematical readers will appreciate the reproducibility of the companion R and python codes.Key Features:• It covers both technical and soft skills.• It has a chapter dedicated to the big data cloud environment. For industry applications, the practice of data science is often in such an environment.• It is hands-on. We provide the data and repeatable R and Python code in notebooks. Readers can repeat the analysis in the book using the data and code provided. We also suggest that readers modify the notebook to perform analyses with their data and problems, if possible. The best way to learn data science is to do it!

Multiscale Modeling of Vascular Dynamics of Micro- and Nano-particles

Multiscale Modeling of Vascular Dynamics of Micro- and Nano-particles

Recent advances witness the potential to employ nanomedicine and game-changing methods to deliver drug molecules directly to diseased sites. To optimize and then enhance the efficacy and specificity, the control and guidance of drug carriers in vasculature has become crucial. Current bottlenecks in the optimal design of drug carrying particles are the lack of knowledge about the transport of particles, adhesion on endothelium wall and subsequent internalization into diseased cells. To study the transport and adhesion of particle in vasculature, the authors have made great efforts to numerically investigate the dynamic and adhesive motions of particles in the blood flow. This book discusses the recent achievements from the establishment of fundamental physical problem to development of multiscale model, and finally large scale simulations for understanding transport of particle-based drug carriers in blood flow.

A study of The Travels of Lao Can through an environmental lens. When the Yellow River Floods explores the relationship between environmental degradation, hydraulic engineering, and nation-building in the context of Liu E's The Travels of Lao Can. This book provides a unique perspective on modern Chinese literary history that goes beyond conventional narratives that focus solely on political and cultural factors. The main areas covered include the role of water management in literary nation-building and the connections between the novel's various themes, such as river engineering, medical and political discourses, national sentiment, and landscape description. By offering a comprehensive analysis of The Travels of Lao Can, this book broadens the understanding of nation-building in early twentieth-century China, highlighting the impact of environmental crises and hydraulics on the formation of national literature and consciousness. When the Yellow River Floods provides a new perspective on the environmental roots of modern Chinese literature, making it an essential read for those seeking to understand the complex interplay between literature, the environment, and national identity in China. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Chinese literature, history, and environmental studies.

This book, available in both a simplified and a full-form character edition, is designed to help low-intermediate students of Mandarin improve their vocabulary and grammar competence, reading strategies, and translation skills. It uses Chinese idiomatic proverbs as the foundation of the instructional material, which allows the authors to present their lessons in a more dynamic fashion than the typical grammar-and-translation approach.
Heteroglossic Asia

Heteroglossic Asia

Francis Chia-Hui Lin

Heteroglossic Asia presents an analysis of geographic, historical, cultural, economic, spatial and political factors underlying Taiwan’s maritime urbanity by means of case studies based on Taipei and Kaohsiung; two cities which represent the multi-accentual character of Taiwan’s urban environment and its recent changes and development through architecture.Focussing on the concept of a heteroglossic Asia Pacific, exemplified by the analysis of Taiwan’s urban transformation, the study argues that Taiwan’s urban environment shows a form of intended "fuzziness" which cannot be described as resting on either a simplified nationalist base or chaotic societal anxiety. Rather, this form lies between binary poles: autocracy and democracy, nation state and day-to-day life, top-down and bottom-up orientations, orthodoxy and hybridisation.
