Light

Light enables us to see the world around us. Our sense of sight provides us with direct information about space and time, the physical arrangement of the world, and how it changes. This almost universal shared sensation of vision has led to a fascination with the nature and properties of light across the ages. But the light we see is just a small part of the whole spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, ranging from radio waves to gamma rays. In this Very Short Introduction Ian Walmsley discusses early attempts to explain light, and the development of apparently opposing particulate and wave theories by scientists such as Isaac Newton and Christiaan Huygens. He shows how light was recognized as an electromagnetic wave in the 19th century, and the development of the quantum mechanics view of wave-particle duality in the 20th century. He also describes the many applications of light, domestic and scientific, such as microwaves, DVDs, and lasers. We now use the whole range of electromagnetic radiation to peer both into the human body and deep into space. Turning to the future of optics, Walmsley concludes by looking at some of the most exciting new developments using quantum light sources in communications and computing. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. In a Small, Quiet Village (Where Nothing Much Ever Happens)
A seemingly ordinary village has very curious happenings in this magical realism upper-middle grade novel. Before the wayfaring Adam arrived in the small village, his grandfather apprised him that the place was, "Like a beacon of hope...That small, quiet village where nothing much ever happens. Where you'll want for nothing, and ordinary people live ordinary lives." The village welcomed him instantly, after all it's not every day that someone new visits. The families of ten-year-old Jacob and his best friend, fourteen-year-old Sabrina, put Adam up in an abandoned house and make him the guest of honor at a lamb roast.Nineteen-year-old Belle and her best friend Donna are contentedly predictable, eating their sack lunches each day on the porch steps of Grandpa and Grandma's house-who are not actually their grandparents but all the villagers call them that. Amanda, nearly the same age as Adam, tells the newcomer, "I kind of think of this place like a book. Everyone's their own main character in their own stories, and supporting cast in everyone else's stories...I honestly haven't seen much more of the world than what this place has to offer, but I love it here so much, why would I ever want to leave?"Young Jacob and Sabrina enjoy spending their days together on little adventures, often walking the long path to what Jacob calls the "inconvenience store" due to its distance, and the old abandoned and dilapidated train station which, inexplicably, contains a perfectly working vending machine-no one knew who put it there, who filled it, or who maintained it-where they would enjoy a soda together. When a disastrous storm wreaks havoc in the village, tragedy ensues and grief, loss, and uncertainty fill the village. With some moving on from the hamlet, needing to carve their own path, the rest are left wondering what the future will bring and how long it will be until the village returns to its ordinary, quiet place once again.A masterful literary work for upper middle-graders, steeped with subtle threads of magic in the mundane, creating a seemingly ordinary tale with extraordinary details, In a Small, Quiet Village (Where Nothing Much Ever Happens) is the first title in the Cities & Villages saga.

Originally published in 1974. Here is a detailed discussion of educational change in New Zealand with implications which should provoke a fresh approach both to the educational tradition in Britain and to the problems of other educational systems which are subject to democratic control. It is primarily concerned with developments in the quarter-century between 1945 and 1970. With frequent reference to events preceding and following this period, the author stresses throughout the professed educational ideal of all post-war New Zealand governments: to provide equality of opportunity in education. He deals with principles of policy and administrative control, including the universities and estimates the influence on official policy of interest groups inside and outside the educational system. He examines social issues which include the extent to which governments have failed to promote equality of opportunity in the schooling of minority groups in the country, and treats, in an historical perspective, the perennial vexed question of state aid to private schools. The concluding chapters describe and analyse the characteristics, difficulties and prospects of primary, secondary and tertiary education.

A Biblical Kingdom Theology: A Biblical Study of teh Kingdom of God in the context of His Missio Dei
In this challenging study Dr. Fair examines Kingdom Theology in the context of the history of kingdom views and ecclesiology in the recent history of Churches of Christ. He was challenged by a lecture and comment made by Dr. James I. Packer that Churches of Christ, in his view, had shown little interest in kingdom theology, but had majored in ecclesiology and studies of church structure notably since the 19th century Restoration Movement. Premillennial challenges arising within Churches of Christ in the mid-20th century and recent social justice concerns involving the meaning and context of kingdom living indicated to Fair that a serious examination of a biblical kingdom theology in the context of God's Missio Dei covenant with Abraham was necessary. This book, then, seeks to examine the evangelistic missional nature of kingdom theology and God's Missio Dei purpose in his kingdom call and commission of Abraham.

The power flow equations model the relationship between voltage phasors and power injections at nodes (buses) in an electric power system and are fundamental in their analysis and operation. A wealth of literature exists on these equations, many providing different representations of them. This monograph provides the first comprehensive survey of representations in the context of optimization. To achieve this the power flow representations surveyed are categorized as either relaxations or approximations. The techniques described in here form the basis of running an optimally efficient modern day power system. A Survey of Relaxations and Approximations of the Power Flow Equations is a must-read for all students and researchers working on the cutting edge of electric power systems.

Surveying an area dense with conflicting observations and ideas, this volume vividly depicts the current state of knowledge as well as the great diversity of opinion in the field of population ecology. Ten papers by outstanding authorities focus on three main issues-the effects of environment and population density on population dynamics, the influence of animal behavior on population growth, and the possibilities of genetic feedback or short-term evolutionary change on control of animal populations. An incisive introduction by the editor establishes a frame of reference and supplies succinct resolutions of some of the important controversies dealt with in these pages.

First published in 1985, Defoe’s Fiction explores Defoe’s work by considering it in the context of its genre. The book highlights the difficulty of placing Defoe’s fiction in the most appropriate context due to it being aimed primarily at a popular market, in contrast to the more literary productions of Pope, Swift, or Addison. It also comments on the trend of focusing on Defoe’s irony or emphasising his mimetic power. In doing so, it seeks to explain, rather than judge, Defoe’s achievement by looking at his whole body of work in the context of its genre. Defoe’s Fiction will appeal to those with an interest in Defoe, comparative literature, and the history of literary criticism.

Literature and Crime in Augustan England
Eighteenth-century England saw an explosion of writings about deviance. In literature, in the law, and in the press, writers returned again and again to the question of crime and criminals. While the extension of the legal system formalised the power of the state to categorise and punish ‘deviance’, writers repeatedly confronted the problematic nature of legal authority and the unstable idea of ‘the criminal’. Some of this commentary was supportive, some was subversive and resistant, uncovering the complexity of issues the law sought to ignore.Originally published in 1991, Ian Bell’s masterly investigation of the diverse representations of crime and legality in the Augustan period ranges widely across the contemporary press, involving court reports, philosophical writings, periodicals, biographies, pornography and polemics. Re-assessing the canonical texts of eighteenth-century ‘Literature’, Bell situates the work of Defoe, Hogarth, Gay, Swift, Pope, Richardson and Fielding in its social and political context.

In this objective, practical and authoritative introductory text the author reveals how the fundamental principles of the human-animal relationship drive the development of animal law. The book explains the criteria by which the lawful use of animals is determined, and how these criteria impact evolving standards of animal protection and define the responsibilities of people in their interactions with animals. The author identifies 29 key principles which constitute the core knowledge necessary for people involved in debating, assessing, and guiding the evolution of society’s national and international rulebook of animal welfare law. The book also considers animal welfare and law in the context of a global market through discussion of common issues such as climate change, biosecurity, food safety and food supply. Based on successful law courses run by the author and his own expertise as an animal law lecturer, prosecutor and specialist legal adviser, the book combines insights from science, ethics and law to provide an essential understanding of what informs society and the law with regards to animals and their welfare.
