Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Religious Toleration

Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Religious Toleration

Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Religious Toleration is a study of the influence of Christopher Marlowe on William Shakespeare and vice versa, with a focus on how their works interrogate Reformation theology and the construction of masculine identity. Written by English scholar Ian McAdam, this book contests the idea that Shakespeare was only interested in Marlowe’s theatrical techniques rather than his intellectual reflections, and argues that Marlowe's commercial ambitions reflect deeper cultural and psychological aspects of early modern self-fashioning. McAdam contends the playwrights’ shared drive for social advancement and cohesive identity is explored through their engagement with the Protestant theology of grace, which both intensified and problematized individual agency during the Reformation era.An insightful intervention for scholars of Shakespeare, Reformation studies, and early modern literature, Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Religious Toleration contextualizes Marlowe’s "blasphemies" as a nuanced religiosity that has been overlooked. The text’s central thesis is that Shakespeare then, in turn, develops a subtler approach to Marlowe’s religious radicalism, producing plays and poems more profoundly influenced by Marlowe’s theological dissent than previously acknowledged. Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Religious Toleration challenges prevailing assumptions in the field, examining the trajectory and intersections of these two historic playwrights and offering a new perspective on their expressions of religious, gendered, and sexual subjectivity.

Before his masterpiece The Rise of the Novel made him one of the most influential post-war British literary critics, Ian Watt was a soldier, a prisoner of war of the Japanese, and a forced labourer on the notorious Burma-Thailand Railway. Both an intellectual biography and an intellectual history of the mid-century, this book reconstructs Watt's wartime world: these were harrowing years of mass death, deprivation, and terror, but also ones in which communities and institutions were improvised under the starkest of emergency conditions. Ian Watt: The Novel and the Wartime Critic argues that many of our foundational stories about the novel—about the novel's origins and development, and about the social, moral, and psychological work that the novel accomplishes—can be traced to the crises of the Second World War and its aftermath.
Ian Fleming's Commandos: The Story of the Legendary 30 Assault Unit
In 1941, the United Kingdom faced its darkest hour: it stood alone against the Germans, who had chased British forces out of France, Norway, and Greece. All it had left were desperate measures--commando raids, intelligence coups, feats of derring-do. Any such "novel enterprise," wrote Admiral John Godfrey, Director of Naval Intelligence, required "an officer with drive and imagination of the highest order." He found one in Commander Ian Fleming. In Ian Fleming's Commandos, Nicholas Rankin tells the exciting story of a secret intelligence outfit conceived and organized by Fleming. Named 30 Assault Unit, the group was expected to seize enemy codebooks, cipher machines, and documents in high-stakes operations. Assault unit commandos fought in the North African campaign and the invasions of Sicily and Italy, poked over the bones of bombed Pantelleria, and liberated Capri. Rebranded '30 Assault Unit', they went ashore on D-Day, heading for rocket-sites and radar-stations. They helped liberate Paris (including the Ritz Bar and the Rothschild mansion) and then set out to steal scientific and industrial secrets from the heart of Germany. Their final amazing coup was to seize the entire archives of the German Navy's three hundred tons of documents. Ian Fleming flew out in person to accompany the loot back to Britain, where it was combed for evidence to use in the Nuremburg trials. Based on incisive research and written with verve and insight, this new paperback edition of Ian Fleming's Commandos brings to life a long-obscured chapter of World War II and reveals the inspiration behind Fleming's famous fiction.

Ian McDonald is South America's equivalent of Robert Frost; a poet writing in a young country who, with an open heart and in clean, honest language, has set down its characters and events, its landscape, traditions and myths, for future generations to discover. Readers far beyond the Caribbean will come to admire his deft use of dialect; his nature poetry, steeped in the mysteries of the Guyanese interior; his sobering awareness of mortality. This selection by Edward Baugh, published for the poet's seventy-fifth birthday, sets the poems from McDonald's four collections in chronological order for the first time. As Baugh writes in his introduction, Ian McDonald's verse is 'irradiated by his celebration of life, his gratitude for happy days and for earth's bounty of joy'.
