The purpose of this book is to present the theory of Fourier transforms and related topics in a form suitable for the use of students and research workers interested in the boundary value problems of physics and engineering.The focus of the book is on applications, rather than on the theory itself; thus, the first three chapters are devoted to a general treatment of the fundamentals, but no attempt is made to present the foundation in their most general form. Instead, the main theorems are established for a certain class of functions which is sufficiently wide to embrace most of those which occur in problems in applied mathematics. The last seven chapters cover the uses of the theory in solving boundary and initial value problems in engineering and physics. To make the book accessible to undergraduates beginning the study of theoretical physics, no specialized knowledge of physics is assumed, however a good grounding in advanced calculus is a prerequisite. Each chapter begins with a discussion of the physical fundamentals and the derivation of the basic equations. Moreover, the author has taken special pains to include, in the chapters on basic theory, not only the common properties of the Fourier transforms, but also those of the Mellin, Laplace, and Hankel transforms. Finite transforms, dual integral equations, the Wiener-Hopf procedure, and the properties of the Dirac delta function are also considered in some detail. The physical problems included in the text were carefully chosen for their importance and relevance to the topic under discussion.

Ireland's landscape is marked by fault lines of religious, ethnic, and political identity that have shaped its troubled history. Troubled Geographies maps this history by detailing the patterns of change in Ireland from 16th century attempts to "plant" areas of Ireland with loyal English Protestants to defend against threats posed by indigenous Catholics, through the violence of the latter part of the 20th century and the rise of the "Celtic Tiger." The book is concerned with how a geography laid down in the 16th and 17th centuries led to an amalgam based on religious belief, ethnic/national identity, and political conviction that continues to shape the geographies of modern Ireland. Troubled Geographies shows how changes in religious affiliation, identity, and territoriality have impacted Irish society during this period. It explores the response of society in general and religion in particular to major cultural shocks such as the Famine and to long term processes such as urbanization.

Despite five decades of research, parallel computing remains an exotic, frontier technology on the fringes of mainstream computing. Its much-heralded triumph over sequential computing has yet to materialize. This is in spite of the fact that the processing needs of many signal processing applications continue to eclipse the capabilities of sequential computing. The culprit is largely the software development environment. Fundamental shortcomings in the development environment of many parallel computer architectures thwart the adoption of parallel computing. Foremost, parallel computing has no unifying model to accurately predict the execution time of algorithms on parallel architectures. Cost and scarce programming resources prohibit deploying multiple algorithms and partitioning strategies in an attempt to find the fastest solution. As a consequence, algorithm design is largely an intuitive art form dominated by practitioners who specialize in a particular computer architecture. This, coupled with the fact that parallel computer architectures rarely last more than a couple of years, makes for a complex and challenging design environment. To navigate this environment, algorithm designers need a road map, a detailed procedure they can use to efficiently develop high performance, portable parallel algorithms. The focus of this book is to draw such a road map. The Parallel Algorithm Synthesis Procedure can be used to design reusable building blocks of adaptable, scalable software modules from which high performance signal processing applications can be constructed. The hallmark of the procedure is a semi-systematic process for introducing parameters to control the partitioning and scheduling of computation and communication. This facilitates the tailoring of software modules to exploit different configurations of multiple processors, multiple floating-point units, and hierarchical memories. To showcase the efficacy of this procedure, the book presents threecase studies requiring various degrees of optimization for parallel execution.

This book explores a novel methodological approach which combines analytical techniques from linguistics and geography to bring fresh insights to the study of poverty. Using Geographical Text Analysis, it maps the discursive construction of poverty in the UK and compares the results to what administrative data reveal. The analysis draws together qualitative and quantitative techniques from corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, Geographical Information Science, and the spatial humanities. By identifying the place-names that occur within close proximity to search terms associated with to poverty it shows how different newspapers use place to foreground different aspects of poverty (including employment, housing, money, and benefits), and how the London-centric nature of newspaper reporting dominates the discursive construction of UK poverty. This book demonstrates how interdisciplinary research methods can illuminate complex social issues and will appeal to researchers in a number of disciplines from sociology, geography and the spatial humanities, economics, linguistics, health, and public policy, in addition to policymakers and practitioners.
