Gloria: A Novel by Iboro Thompson.Gloria, a young Nigerian school leaver dreams of going to university. She gets her wish granted when Josephine, her elder and more sophisticated sister offers to sponsor her. On campus, she is immediately immersed into a torrid world of cultism, rape, and high class prostitution. As she lives life on the fast lane, through connections to a highly influential female legislator, she gets sponsored to Europe-Paris as a human trafficking agent. Her life in Paris however takes a different dimension when she meets and falls in love with Edward, a handsome and distinguished British diplomat. Their love affair is however frustrated from the very start as he discovers her pretentious double life. He dumps her and heartbroken, she leaves Paris and relocates to London in an attempt to pick up the pieces of her life and live life on the straight and narrow. Her past however catches up with her as she is embroiled in a plot that leads to murder of British playboy and millionaire, Alan Kaur. The British police are on her trail, and on the run, she flees London and returns to Paris. Old habits die hard as she returns to her old trade- prostitution and lives recklessly, in an effort to rid herself of her demons. Unexpected luck shines her way as she is discovered by maverick fashion designing duo-Leon and Alexandre. She is engaged by the pair to front the Spring edition of their lingerie range, and launch of their design collection in Paris. On her first outing, she is an instant hit, and makes an instant impression with the press as an emerging catwalk star. The tide of her luck seems to have changed for the better, but she makes the terrible mistake of allowing herself to be embroiled yet again in another sordid plot to blackmail a Dutch MP as payback for a love betrayal. The MP is brutally murdered and she is framed from the murder. This time, she must pay for her sins as the long arm of the law catches up with her and her whole world comes crashing down. This book is the first in a series of planned volumes focused on preserving the character of the development of bioethics in particular cultural contexts. As the first of these volumes, Leo Pessini, Christian de Paul de Barchifontaine, and Fernando Lolas Stepke’s work has succeeded well. It has brought together accounts by sch- ars who were crucial to the emergence of bioethics in the Ibero-American cultural domain. This trail-blazing work in the history of bioethics will be of enduring s- nificance. I am deeply in their debt for having shouldered this far from easy task. Bioethics is the product of very particular socio-historical developments. Most prominent among them have been (1) the secularization of the dominant culture of North America, Western Europe, and now Central and South America as well, (2) a deflation of the status and authority of physicians as moral authorities able to guide their own profession, and (3) the salience of a post-traditional animus that gives c- tral place to persons as isolated atomic sources of moral authority. Bioethics initially took shape in North America as a post-Christian, post-professional, post-traditional social movement. This bioethics sought to establish a moral discourse for the public forum, a moral practice able to give practical guidance in hospitals and other insti- tions, and a body of undergirding and justifying theoretical reflections.

Ecocriticism: The Ibero-American Experience presents a distinct view of the diverse social and physical geographies of the Americas, their political and cultural connections to the Iberian Peninsula, and their relationship to the environment in its diverse representations. The topics ranging from myths and legends, poetics, young adult literature, arts and performance, to cinematography by women dialogue across chapters reveal a persistent usage of nature and environment as recurrent themes. Through visual and plastic arts, as well as poetic narratives of social utopias/dystopias, the contributors provide original readings on the effects of societal views and struggles to protect and consciously exploit the natural world. The uniqueness of this book relies therefore on the geographical and cultural approach to the poetics of nature and its metaphorical and physical embodiment, place and geography through utopian and dystopian world recreation and representation, and finally the nexus with ecology and social actors.
Ibero-Dutch Imperial Entanglements in the Seventeenth Century
This book explores the entanglements among Spain, Portugal, and the Dutch Republic during the seventeenth century from a global perspective. It offers a compelling analysis of how Ibero-Dutch relations shifted from violence and conflict—during the Iberian Union (1580–1640) and the Dutch quest for independence (1579–1648)—into collaboration and coexistence in the century’s second half. The encounters between the Iberians and the Dutch in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean regions highlight their centrality in geopolitical shifts around the globe. Challenging the paradigm of decline, the contributions gathered here demonstrate that instead, each polity embraced strategic trade-offs and reshaped imperial pursuits that ultimately allowed them to thrive as empires during the entire seventeenth century.

The territory of the Caucasus has been conquered by man since ancient times, as evidenced by numerous Paleolithic material cultural monuments, such as sites of the Ashelian and Muster type (Ochamchire, Mount Yashtukh near Sukhum), as well as cave sites of the Upper Paleolithic age (Davis-Hvreli, Sakazhia, Mgvimevi etc.), Neolithic (Kistrik, Odigii) and Eneolithic (Beshtashen). In Georgia, for example, ancient mines (Gebi), remnants of ore-smelting and foundry workshops (Tsaghveri, Sokhumi, Svaneti, etc.) were discovered. One of the oldest settlements excavated by archaeologists is the settlement of Kul-Tepe, IV millennium BC. The inhabitants of this settlement lived in one place, built earthen houses, cultivated land and grazed livestock. Archaeologists have found similar settlements in other parts of the Caucasus as well.
