One afternoon in May, 8-year-old Ilaria gets into the car with her father, expecting to go out to dinner with her mother and sister. Instead, she is taken across the border, on a whirlwind road trip around Italy with her father, from Trieste to Rome and Sicily, sleeping in roadside hotels and singing to the radio. But Ilaria's father is unpredictable, and she never knows which version of him she will get: charming and funny, or volatile and drunk. Torn between her life in Geneva with her mother and this strange shifting adventure on the road, Ilaria doesn't know who to side with in her parents' acrimonious separation. Throughout her travels, Ilaria meets a rag-tag cast of characters, learns how to light a cigarette, discovers when is best to keep quiet around her father, and finds comfort in her lovable teddy bear Birillo. Ilaria's voice is singular and powerful. Based on the author's own experience, this deeply moving novel captures the blurred lines between love and harm, memory and reality, fear and wonder. Ilaria is a haunting, intimate coming of age story about a girl who is forced to grow up too soon, and about the fragile moments of beauty she finds along the way.

Postcranial Descriptions of Ilaria and Ngapakaldia (Vombatiformes, Marsupialia) and the Phylogeny of the Vombatiforms Based on Postcranial Morphology
The author describes the postcrania of the Miocene marsupials Ilaria illumidens and Ngapakaldia tedfordi and compares them with those of other vombatiforms and out-group marsupials. A cladistic analysis of postcranial characters shows Ilaria to be most closely related to the wombats, primarily on the basis of the highly derived manus. Ngapakaldia's postcranium is more plesiomorphic and most similar to the phalangeriform possums.

Social Justice and the Legitimacy of Slavery

Social Justice and the Legitimacy of Slavery

Ilaria L.E. Ramelli

Oxford University Press
2016
sidottu
Were slavery and social injustice leading to dire poverty in antiquity and late antiquity only regarded as normal, 'natural' (Aristotle), or at best something morally 'indifferent' (the Stoics), or, in the Christian milieu, a sad but inevitable consequence of the Fall, or even an expression of God's unquestionable will? Social Justice and the Legitimacy of Slavery shows that there were also definitive condemnations of slavery and social injustice as iniquitous and even impious, and that these came especially from ascetics, both in Judaism and in Christianity, and occasionally also in Greco-Roman ('pagan') philosophy. Ilaria L. E. Ramelli argues that this depends on a link not only between asceticism and renunciation, but also between asceticism and justice, at least in ancient and late antique philosophical asceticism. Ramelli provides a careful investigation through all of Ancient Philosophy (not only Aristotle and the Stoics, but also the Sophists, Socrates, Plato, the Neoplatonists, and much more), Ancient to Rabbinic Judaism, Hellenistic Jewish ascetic groups such as the Essenes and the Therapeutae, all of the New Testament, with special focus on Paul and Jesus, and Greek, Latin, and Syriac Patristic, from Clement and Origen to the Cappadocians, from John Chrysostom to Theodoret to Byzantine monastics, from Ambrose to Augustine, from Bardaisan to Aphrahat, without neglecting the Christianized Sentences of Sextus. In particular, Ramelli considers Gregory of Nyssa and the interrelation between theory and practice in all of these ancient and patristic philosophers, as well as to the parallels that emerge in their arguments against slavery and against social injustice.

The Emotions of Internationalism follows a number of international people and institutions active in the Alps in the 1920s and 1930s, exploring how they understood emotions and how they tried to employ them to achieve their political and non-political goals. Through the analysis of a broad spectrum of unpublished archival materials in four languages (English, French, Italian, and German), this study takes readers on an evocative, historical journey through the Alps. A wide range of characters populate its pages, from Heidi and the protagonists of novels and films set on the mountains, to Woodrow Wilson and other high-level political figures active both inside and outside of the League of Nations, to the alpinists and climbers engaged in hikes and international congresses, to the many children involved in camping trips, to the countless patients of the sanatoria for the treatment of tuberculosis which for decades used to dot alpine villages and to excite the popular imagination. At the centre of the volume are people's emotions-real and imagined-from the resentment left after the First World War to the 'friendship' evoked in speeches and concretely implemented in a number of alpine settings for a variety of purposes, to the 'joy' that contemporaries saw as the key to navigating the complexities of 'modernity' and to avoiding another war. The result is a compelling overview of the institutions and people involved in international cooperation in the 1920s and 1930s, understood through the lens of the history of emotions.
Cultures of Protest and Industrial Conflict in Italy since 1945
The history of the twentieth century in Italy is marked by industrial unrest. And yet, our knowledge of the cultures that informed those protests and, equally important, of the forms they took is still limited, leaving important questions unanswered on their meanings, functions, mechanisms of transmission, continuities, and discontinuities with earlier waves of mobilization and global connections. In this illuminating and thought-provoking book, Favretto explores the protest methods and the underpinning protest cultures of Italian industrial workers from the collapse of Fascism to the present day. Challenging common portrayals of the labour movement as unimaginative and conventional in its tactics, the book demonstrates the variety of forms of industrial protest, encompassing actions such as sit-ins, protest camps, and hunger strikes, which are typically not associated with industrial conflict. Transcending the boundaries of contemporary history, the book also uncovers the persistence and reinvention of tactics commonly identified with the pre-modern period, such as time wasting, sabotage, and theft, and it shows the influence of earlier cultures and carnivalesque practices of popular contention, such as charivari, known as rough music in Britain and scampanata and other names in Italy. By analysing tactics and cultures distinct from the official union protest repertoire that studies of post-1945 Italy and the labour movement often presume obsolete, the book provides a more profound understanding of workers' protest practices and underlying cultures and a better comprehension of their breadth and scope. It casts new light on the impact of internal migration on workers' protest rituals and practices, working-class women's participation in collective action, Communists' and Catholics' distinctive protest cultures, and, moving to recent decades, the effects of de-industrialisation on industrial conflict and its forms. The book fills an important gap in the study of the Italian labour movement and Italian history, enriching our understanding of the mechanisms behind the transmission and innovation of protest cultures and tactics. Its attention to the foreign experiences that shaped Italian labour industrial conflicts and analysis of tactics that have seen worldwide usage over extended periods also make it an essential contribution to a global history of protest.
Women in Martial

Women in Martial

Ilaria Marchesi

Oxford University Press

Women in Martial is the first monograph to treat the portrayals of women in Martial's Epigrams in a systematic way. In this volume, Marchesi proposes a new method of exploring the cultural construction of femininity in the Flavian age, presenting an interplay between close readings of Martial's poems and their contextualization through legal, historiographic, rhetorical, and grammatical discussions. This book discusses the social roles assigned to women in Roman society, where they were at once called to represent their fathers and reproduce their husbands, together with the question of to what extent they are depicted as semiotic signifiers in Martial's corpus. Noting socially aberrant behavior by pointedly using the discourse of grammar and its categories to detect and address the social issues of his time, Martial—a poet who distinctively adopts the role of a surrogate censor for Domitian—constructs the women he depicts in both negative and positive ways as signs of their time. Using a wide range of examples from ancient Roman culture, Women in Martial models a way of using literary sources to address the intersection of social and cultural issues in the study of women in the ancient world, ultimately demonstrating the extent to which the social roles and identities of women were constructed and policed through semiotic categories.

Concealed Questions

Concealed Questions

Ilaria Frana

Oxford University Press
2017
sidottu
This book presents a novel analysis of concealed-question constructions, reports of a mental attitude in which part of a sentence looks like a nominal complement (e.g. Eve's phone number in Adam knows Eve's phone number), but is interpreted as an indirect question (Adam knows what Eve's phone number is). Such constructions are puzzling in that they raise the question of how their meaning derives from their constituent parts. In particular, how a nominal complement (Eve's phone number), normally used to refer to an entity (e.g. Eve's actual phone number in Adam dialled Eve's phone number) ends up with a question-like meaning. In this book, Ilaria Frana adopts a theory according to which noun phrases with concealed question meanings are analysed as individual concepts. The traditional individual concept theory is modified and applied to the phenomena discussed in the recent literature and some new problematic data. The end result is a fully compositional account of a wide range of concealed-question constructions. The exploration of concealed questions offered in the book provides insights into both issues in semantic theory, such as the nature of quantification in natural languages and the use of type shifter in the grammar, and issues surrounding the syntax-semantics interface, such as the interpretation of copy traces and the effects on semantic interpretation of different syntactic analyses of relative clauses. The book will interest scholars and graduate students in linguistics, especially those interested in semantics and the syntax-semantics interface, as well as philosophers of language working on the topic of intensionality.
