Poetry. ARS POETICA is not a sonnet sequence--despite the resemblances--but a sequence of soundings. Each poem is carefully dated: it was precisely at this moment that these words occurred to me; it was at this moment that I breathed these words in (inspiration). Remembering Wordsworth, we might call these poems spots of time.

Fiat Lux is Ivan Arg elles' Odyssey through all human history and literature, as well as through the kaleidoscope of his own life memories.... Portions of Fiat Lux soar as high as any American poetry since Pound's Pisan Cantos.- Fred Bauman. Fiat Lux is most of all about language, the great gibberishes out of which creation and languages come, and the Law of Time...- Sharon Doubiago. One can read in Fiat Lux an epic poem as it might be dreamed; or perhaps the dream of a culture in which the epic consciousness has been repressed, yet endlessly renews just beneath the skin of thought, in endless metamorphosis, pursuing mortal pleasure....In this world where Chronos is playful, Freud has shacked up in Pythia, one reads our culture's fevered dreams as oracles and symptoms. These prophetic anxieties are a babel of stories, of voices, of worlds, they are the fragments of languages, scattered like shattered beer bottles or amphorae along the highway. - Olchar E. Lindsann.

Jack Foley wrote of the two poems in this book: "Their vast reach and their vast reading include the Classics and the realm of Pound's Cantos, where the dead and the living mingle. James Joyce's "nighttown" is here as well, and we feel the constant presence of the author's identical twin, Jos (1939-2011). These poems are not for the faint of feeling or the faint of intellect, but they are for those who value poetry, literature, the world." He illustrates his point with these four lines from Ivan's book: "women skilled in weaving and ornamentation you shall have/ to accompany you to the other earth and to hold in your hand/ a distaff and by your side a harp to sing the lonely nights/ in the labyrinth of sleep..."

Ivan Arg elles does not mine the general American vein of didactic or "therapeutic" poetry that is supposed to be of use in some way. What he creates is an expansive romantic/surrealist summoning of multiple, swarming worlds and histories. He is thus one of the most authentic poets working in English today, and one of the most beautiful in his use of language. His voice is unique, but each of his books has its own timbre, point of view; its own movement and thematic centers. In Orphic Cantos, those centers revolve around the paradoxes of language and consciousness, which are understood to be at the very marrow of the human. The nature of his engagement over the past 40 years has been far more than a desire to write "poetry"; rather, poetry is the embodiment of a complex psychic need, the air he needs to be in the life form and time he occupies. When you read Arg elles' work, you are immersed in the basic human experience. His work is a great treasure. Includes an Introduction by John M. Bennett
Diario Di Un Ottogenario: Poema Con Mv°s Lv°grimas Que Manos
The title means "Diary of an Eighty-Year-Old: A Poem with More Tears than Hands"; the poems or cantos are in English. The Book is a long, intense, lyrical, and often surreal meditation/recollection of a life in all its complexities, with frequent immersions into the loss of friends and family. In short this is a stunningly beautiful, unique, and unsentimentalized invocation of life and its mirror image, death. Arg elles remains at the peak of his powers with this unforgettably intimate, universal, and deeply human work, "where sleep is freed / from waking".

"To be an innovative poet on the Left Coast (or anywhere) is like shouting your truth to an empty (or at best half full) room. This is especially true if your innovations don't match the practice of the current reigning innovation. Iv n Arg elles has never been a L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poet, though language-tongue's parlance-is at the heart of what he does. Hearing him read his work aloud is a deep pleasure, but it is also here, on the page, in octogenarian splendor. As Pound, late in life, said of Eliot, after Eliot's death, after decades of output: Read him", Jack Foley. "Two poems per morning from the beloved Iv n Arg elles cascade in reverse each overcoming transcendence. This sonic inversion choirs joy, choirs that are speaking-being behind us crablike. This morning: "Is there anything in the sky that looks like the world?" To paraphrase Zbigniew Herbert, the poet with one wing commands the stars to fall and there is light. This is that light coming and going", Solomon Rino.

Iv n Arg elles is clearly one of the most unique and authentic poets working in English today, and I dare say one of the most authentic in any language. His uniquely identifiable voice runs throughout his work, but each of his individual books and poems has its own unique timbre, point of view, its own movement, tone, thematic center. Each work is unique. The nature of his engagement over the past 50 years or so has been far more than a desire to write "poetry", rather, poetry is the air he breathes to embody a complex psychic need, the air he needs to be in the life form and time he occupies. When you consider Iv n Arg elles' work, you are not looking at a literary career, but at something basic about the being of living things in general. Proof of this is that the intense late poems in this book (Vol. One written Oct.21, 2021 to May 1, 2022) are stronger than ever. His work is one of our greatest treasures. -John M. Bennett

The Author writes: OUR SON Max died around 11 PM Feb. 28, 2018, abruptly it seemed, but not unexpectedly, in Kindred Hospital, San Leandro CA. After all, his had been an unusual and prolonged life, an existence that carried him to the reefs of consciousness back and forth many times. Born on Mar 9, 1968 in Nashville TN, he soon moved to Brooklyn NY where he spent the first ten years of his life with all the normal experiences and adventures of any boy of his era. He was basically happy and good natured. A few months after his 10th birthday Max became mysteriously and seriously ill, with symptoms that culminated in his being hospitalized and within a week he was in a coma and underwent several craneotomies. It turned out he had contracted a herpes encephalitis. For the next 40 years his was an epic of numerous ups and down, episodes of severe setbacks, but adventures of limited recovery as well, on horseback, in swimming pools, on a three wheeled bike, and with his electric synthesizer/piano which he loved playing above all. He remained at home, with the exception of numerous hospitalizations some quite lengthy, with us, his parents all this time. Until the end. Max's life was a mystery, a tragedy and a joy. Among the enigmas Max left behind was the word HOIL, a syllable he used to write on crayon drawings he made when he was a child around 5 or 6 years old. While we may never know what he meant by HOIL, these poems are an attempt to elucidate Max's death, as well as his life, giving some meaning it is hoped to the cosmic randomness that seemed to characterize his existence, HOIL It must be noted that while the poems here represent a concentration of feeling derived from a certain cosmic event, this is not a complete collection, as I continue and will keep on writing poems about Max, in life and death. For as long as I live the Universe will seem inconceivable without Max. HOIL Candidus insuetum miratur limen Olympisub pedibusque videt nubes et sidera Daphnis Virgil, Ecloga V, 56-57

The authors describe this long poem like this: "Field Hollers was born of insomnia, trading stanzas largely predawn, back and forth before light harrowed." This sequence of stanzas consists of a sort of dialogue, a back-and-forth between 2 "twins" (ie, 2 voices, not 2 sets of twins) who constantly switch places, go into reverse, or speak as one voice, so much so that there is little distinction, really, between them. They become a single double voice, and talk on a metaphoric and metaphysical plane in language that is achingly beautiful and resonant. This is a unique and extraordinary work, and can be read, and reread, in one sitting, and again and again and again. - John M. Bennett

A story of hope, love and purpose for anyone who has ever loved a rescue dog. With wry wit, deep insight, and vivid anecdotes, Tim McHugh gives voice to the family pet and delves into the place where the canine and human hearts become one. Ivan, a mixed-breed dog-philosopher with an extreme underbite and various other deformities, chronicles his life story with keen observations about his adopted family and the people he loves, covering the life events that touch us all. Throughout his life Ivan keeps plugging forward with optimism and faith, always striving to learn from his mistakes, believing that even as he is ultimately facing old age, disease, and death, life is all the more wonderful. To Ivan, love and relationships with people are what matters most, and that if a deformed pound dog like him can find love and acceptance, anyone can. His is a lively, humorous story of hope and perseverance.
