This comprehensively rewritten, updated and extended new edition of this established text focuses on what has become the most important single facet of the quantity surveyor's role - cost management. The scope of the book has been broadened to take account of the widening and more sophisticated cost management and control service that clients now require. The book examines the factors influencing building costs and how the precontract costs can be estimated, analysed and controlled, to ensure that buildings can be completed within the agreed budget and timescale, and be of acceptable quality, function effectively and provide value for money. A new chapter on value management has been added, together with an introductory chapter on cost modelling; the chapter on life cycling costing is extended, while the sections on energy conservation and occupancy costs are expanded. Throughout the text many new case studies, with supporting tables and diagrams, are included in order to enhance the value of this book to the student and the practitioner.

Ivor H. N. Evans (1886–1957) was a British anthropologist, ethnographer and archaeologist who lived and worked in what is now Malaysia, including a brief period as a colonial administrator in 1910–11. This volume, which was originally published in 1927, consists of various papers on Malay beliefs, Malay technology, tribal groups, and some of the antiquities of the Peninsula. It was intended as a companion to Studies in Religion, Folk-lore and Custom in B.N. Borneo and the Malay Peninsula (1923), which gave the results, up to the date of publication, of the author's research into folklore and kindred traditions within the area. This text provides a wealth of additional information, including sections on neolithic implements, cave dwellers, and early bronze and iron tools. It will remain of value to anyone with an interest in the Malaysian culture and the colonial period.

The Matthean Parables offers a fresh approach to the origin of Matthew's Gospel. It builds on current historical, literary, rhetorical and sociological studies of Matthew's Gospel to show how the Matthean parables illuminate the structure, purpose and theology of that gospel. The first part of the book establishes the need for a new attempt to define the genre of Matthew's Gospel, examines what is meant by a parable, and summarises the contribution made by the parables to that new attempt. The second part is a thorough exegetical, historical critical and literary study of all the Matthean parables in the context of the whole gospel and in the light of all the Matthean figurative material. An appendix illustrates the use of syntactical material in defining the character and style of a biblical text.

Inter-relationships of the Dental Tissues The tooth germ has three main components -the enamel organ, the dental papilla and the dental follicle (Fig. 1). The enamel organ is an epithelial structure derived from the ectoderm that lines much of the oral cavity. The dental papilla and the dental follicle are ectomesen chymal (mesectodermal), being partly derived from cells that mi grated from the neural crest early in embryogenesis. Both the gross morphology of the tooth germ and the differentiation of its cells de pend upon a complex pattern of inductive interactions between the epithelium and the ectomesenchyme. The sites in which the teeth will form appear to be determined before the commencement of epithelial downgrowth from the oral epithelium to form the odontogenic epithelium. This epithelial downgrowth (the dental lamina ), the development of the enamel or gans of the individual teeth, and the morphology of each enamel organ, are controlled by the ectomesenchyme. The enamel organ is responsible for the formation of enamel and comprises four layers: outer dental epithelium, stellate reticulum, stratum intermedium and inner dental epithelium (Figs. 1 and 2a).

Originally published in 1938, this book consists of a group of papers considering widely different subjects, but all bearing upon one social problem – the causation and prevention of war. The authors all occupy the same general political position, they are democratic socialists and active members of the Labour Party. The book falls into three rough divisions, although all the papers are self-contained. The first part of the book is psychological and attempts to summarise and analyse the non-historical evidence (ecological, psychological, and anthropological) about the causes of fighting. The second part is historical. It surveys the different causes of international war in the nineteenth century and then discusses the relation between nationalism and capitalism during the same period. The third part is political and first considers the relation of the use of force to the preservation of peace. Then analyses the choices of foreign policy for a pacific power confronted by the threat of aggressive military dictatorship. It concludes with a review and assessment of the various available policies for the prevention of war in general and under the specific contemporary conditions of the time.
