Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) now takes a place among the English poets. His range is wide, including the First World War, in which he served as an infantry private, the passionate celebration of his native Gloucestershire, and fears of the mental imbalance which led to his eventual confinement in a mental hospital. Out of these experiences, he made a poetry unique, vigorous, musical, and direct. This selection of over 150 of his poems, was made by the poet P.J. Kavanagh from his edition of the "Collected Poems of Ivor Gurney". It is reissued now, with a few corrected readings, and with a Chronology and Introduction to Gurney's life, by P.J. Kavanagh.
Ivor Gurney: The Complete Poetical Works, Volume 1
This is the first volume in a five-volume edition of the complete poetical works of Ivor Gurney (1890-1937). Following an extensive study of all known manuscripts, the edition brings much of that work to publication for the first time. Since his death, much of his work has been censored or overlooked, his stylistic development towards modernism written off as the product of 'insanity' The availability of his complete poetry will change absolutely our understanding of Gurney's development, and the true nature of his poetry. It will lay bare his aspirations and pursuits as an artist in all its diversity, as a poet of war, of place, and of the asylum; a poet whose work has been celebrated by Geoffrey Hill for its 'incontestible grandeur'. Volume I presents all of Gurney's poems written from March 1907 to December 1918. It begins with Gurney's earliest surviving verse, and ends, just after the Armistice, with his return to civilian life.
Ivor Novello Song Album
Ivor Novello (born David Ivor Davies) was a Welsh composer, singer and actor who became one of the most popular British entertainers of the early 20th century. He first became well known through the song Keep the Home Fires Burning which he composed during World War I. After the war, he began a film career, and also appeared on stage in the West End, in musical shows of his own devising, most notably The Dancing Years. Novello starred in two early Hitchcock films before heading to Hollywood and appeared in some successful films. He died in 1951, at a fairly young age of 58. Novello wrote his musical shows in the style of operetta, and was one of the last major composers in this form. He generally composed his music to the librettos of Christopher Hassall. The Ivor Novello Awards for songwriting, are awarded each year by the record industry to songwriters and arrangers as well as the performing artistes. **ABRSM selected pieces (Singing from 2009): We’ll gather lilacs: from Perchance to Dream (Novello) Waltz of my heart: from The Dancing Years (Novello & Hassall) **Trinity College London selected piece (Singing 2010-2012): We’ll gather lilacs: from Perchance to Dream (Novello)

Drawing on biographical information, letters, reminiscences and anecdotes, John Lucas pieces together Gurney’s difficult, indeed tragic life, in order to show that Gurney’s poetry, while undoubtedly affected by his mental problems, his trench experiences in World War One, and his complex relationship to Gloucester, the Cotswalds and London, is the sane utterance of a deeply radicalized writer. There is no suggestion that Gurney’s experiences were unique. On the contrary, they were typical, as he well knew, and as he declares in poems which celebrate the implications of comradeship. What is unique is Gurney’s ability to turn these experiences into major poetry. Gurney is the greatest of all those poets who fought in and survived the war and his achievement drastically affects our understanding of twentieth century poetry.
Ivor Gurney's Gloucestershire

Ivor Gurney's Gloucestershire

Ivor Gurney is perhaps best known as a musician and First World War poet but he also wrote vividly and prolifically about his native Gloucestershire, finding inspiration and joy in walking the countryside and expressing its different moods. This book explores the particular Gloucestershire landscapes – the Cotswolds, the Severn Meadows and the city of Gloucester – that stimulated his creativity in poetry and music, but the relationship went much deeper. Gurney became increasingly dependent on ‘being-in’ these Gloucestershire places as the source of his identity and well-being. Confined to a mental asylum in Kent for the last fifteen years of his life, he still drew on his memories of Gloucestershire, but it was a poetry of absence and loss. This book contains a wealth of Gurney’s poetry with many pieces being published here for the first time. Other features aim to clarify the poetry/place dialogue and include an illustrated colour map, in which Ivor Gurney’s Gloucestershire has been interpreted by a map artist working closely with the author; a layered model of Gurney’s relationship with these places; and four walking routes, with accompanying commentaries and poetry extracts. The author is a geographer, literary researcher and walker. Having been born and brought up in Gloucestershire, she has a passion for its landscapes and places.

This book charts the career of a man who has always been respected for his compassion, quirky way of thinking and fearless opposition to orthodox psychiatry. More importantly, he tells of how he came to each one of his conclusions. Ivor Browne has had a positive input into Irish life on both sides of the border. As a young man he was given a fellowship to Harvard University where he studied Public and Community Mental Health. He returned to Ireland determined to put what he had learned into practice and it was his initiative which took the care of mental patients away from large institutions into the community. He conceived and was director of the Irish Foundation for Human Development. This set up the first Community Association in Ireland in Ballyfermot one of the early large housing estates in Dublin. Ballyfermot was merely a housing estate without any facilities, he went in with a professional team and helped the residents to turn it into a thriving working class community. This project was so successful that an off shoot was establish in Derry, called the Inner City Trust which not only rebuilt, but transformed the city of Derry during the years it was being torn down by both sides in the conflict. The work of rebuilding was done by young people of Derry, who were trained by the Trust and inspired away from taking part in the destruction of their home town. Derry was made a model for The Prince of Whales' urban village development project and other urban renewal developments around the world.

Ivor's Poetry is a feast of poetry covering many subjects including fantasy, trips within one's mind, spirituality and life's experiences with an ever present message of having fun, enjoying life and making the most of the hand life dealt you to travel the pathways of life. It is coloured by his being brought up in a large military family, his teenage years living on the island of Penang in Malaysia and the trials and successes he has encountered throughout his lifetime. Avenues of the mind, depression, laughter, death, disability, religion and spirituality are all unfolded here in a most surprisingly entertaining fashion. The clear message of having fun whilst rising from the ashes of depression, redundancy and personal loss have never before been presented in such a personal and open manner that makes one feel that just reading his work could guide you towards one's own personal fulfillment.
