Jörg Friedrich Pfp Architekturen
Over the past four decades, Jörg Friedrich and his prominent Hamburg architecture firm pfp architekten have planned and implemented a wide range of public and private architectural projects intended for a variety of purposes. pfp architekten endeavour to minimise the architectonic object in the context of the urban fabric. They are interested in transforming architecture and the city to create a relaxed future, consistently deploying the ideals of classical modernism. Their constructed spaces are more than functional and aesthetic shapes they are an architecture of encounters. They set up the building within the city as a social stratum. This book uses a large number of examples to illustrate the distinctive thinking and working processes of Jörg Friedrich and his team. It documents design principles and concept development as seen in sketches, models, and impressive photographs, right up until the completion of the building.

For five years during the Second World War, the Allies launched a trial and error bombing campaign against Germany's historical city landscape. Peaking in the war's final three months, it was the first air attack of its kind. Civilian dwellings were struck by-in today's terms-"weapons of mass destruction," with a total of 600,000 casualties, including 70,000 children. In The Fire, historian Jorg Friedrich explores this crucial chapter in military and world history. Combining meticulous research with striking illustrations, Friedrich presents a vivid account of the saturation bombing, rendering in acute detail the annihilation of cities such as Dresden, the jewel of Germany's rich art and architectural heritage. He incorporates the personal stories and firsthand testimony of German civilians into his narrative, creating a macabre portrait of unimaginable suffering, horror, and grief, and he draws on official military documents to unravel the reasoning behind the strikes. Evolving military technologies made the extermination of whole cities possible, but owing, perhaps, to the Allied victory and what W. G. Sebald noted as "a pre-conscious self-censorship, a way of obscuring a world that could no longer be presented in comprehensible terms," the wisdom of this strategy has never been questioned. The Fire is a rare account of the air raids as they were experienced by the civilians who were their targets.

Strategieoptionen Fuer Den Ausbau Strategischer Allianzen
European Approaches to International Relations Theory
A well-established community of American scholars has long dominated the discipline of international relations. Recently, however, certain strands of continental theorizing are being introduced into the mainstream. This is a critical examination of European approaches to international relations theory, suggesting practical ways of challenging manistream thought. Freidrichs presents a detailed sociological analysis of knowledge production in existing European IR communities, namely France, Italy and Scandinavia. He also discusses a selection of European schools and approaches.

Fighting Terrorism and Drugs is an examination of European states in their fight against terrorism and drugs, from the 1960s up to the present day. Jörg Friedrichs explores what makes large European states willing or unwilling to participate in international police cooperation against terrorism and drugs. The book examines forty-eight case studies, with particular regard to the policy preferences of the four largest and most politically important EU Member States: Britain, France, Germany, and Italy. The author argues that if a real understanding of international cooperation is to develop, it is important to understand what individual states want and why they want it. To explain state preferences, Friedrichs considers interests, institutions and ideas from domestic, national and international levels that can affect state preferences either positively or negatively. This theoretically coherent book looks at international police cooperation from a truly international perspective and will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, terrorism, criminology, international law and European integration.

This book reconstructs Hindu–Muslim relations from a European standpoint. Drawing from the Indian context, the author explores options for Western Europe – a region grappling with the refugee crisis and populist reactions to the growth of Muslim minorities. The author shows how India can serve not only as a model but also as a warning for Europe. For example, European liberals may learn not only from the achievements of Indian secularism but also from its crisis. Based on extensive interviews with Indians from diverse backgrounds, from politicians to social activists and from the middle class to slum dwellers, the volume investigates a wide range of perspectives: Hindu and Muslim, religious and secular, moderate and militant.Relevant, engaging and accessible, this book speaks to a broad audience of concerned citizens and policy makers. Scholars of political science, sociology, modern history, cultural studies and South Asian studies will be particularly interested.

Positive relations between Muslims and non-Muslims are important for the future, in Britain and beyond. By studying community relations, this book takes an innovative approach that moves beyond mapping “British Muslims” or “British Islam”. Instead, Jörg Friedrichs discusses the actual ways Muslims and non-Muslims relate, or fail to relate, where it matters most, namely in diverse inner cities. Is Britain a multicultural country, is it moving towards greater integration, or is this a false dichotomy?Given their unique everyday experience, inner city residents prove to be experts when it comes to community relations. To give them a voice and learn from their experience, the book takes us on a tour of diverse English inner cities. Reassuringly, the grassroots perspective of residents is consistent with a vision of integration in multicultural England. Residents are concerned not so much about hot-button issues like extremism or terrorism. Instead, their minds are set on practical matters: how to coexist peacefully in stressful urban environments, and how to find love and raise families when norms diverge.Caught between grievance and aspiration, inner city residents from any background express disappointment at Muslim and non-Muslim parents sending their children to different schools. They also discuss whether governance should be community-blind or community-based, and if Britain is ready for a Muslim Prime Minister. In all of this, Muslim and non-Muslim residents acknowledge that we live in a multicultural society. For most, however, it does not follow that we should adopt multiculturalism as an ideology. Instead, most people crave and support a move towards greater integration.
