The rate of change in the healthcare industry has been staggering. From Electronic Health Records to ICD-10 to Population Health, few industries have undergone such change in such a short amount of time. The silver lining is the treasure trove of digital data, which will enable providers to analyze and compare information across thousands of patients instead of relying on the anecdotal evidence they previously used. To access this knowledge, organizations are turning to analytics. Unfortunately, many organizations are rushing to implement any type of healthcare analytics program without consideration of the steps that must take place to build an effective, long-term analytics solution. Competing on Healthcare Analytics is a practical guide to implementing population health analytics. The book makes a clear argument for how an analytics initiative should be implemented using Mr. Bennett's foundational approach and identifies the most critical success factors. Healthcare organizations should re-access their approach to implementing population health analytics after reading this book. This book includes: - A detailed healthcare transformation model which tracks the progression of analytics to become an "Analytics Focused" healthcare organization;- A discussion of the value of using the foundational approach;- Research studies performed with healthcare organization participants supporting the approach;- A healthcare organization readiness assessment;- An implementation roadmap with critical success factors;- A discussion on what it takes to be a healthcare analytics competitor.Professor Bennett has been presenting his approach to implementing population health analytics to audiences across the country to rave reviews since the summer of 2014. Now it is your turn to access this knowledge that has been honed through his work in healthcare as well as in other industries with clients such as Microsoft, BellSouth, Chase and many others.

With Foreword written by Chris Van Gorder (President & CEO, Scripps Health).Healthcare has been undergoing significant changes in recent years with more expected well into the foreseeable future. Now, more than ever, we need leaders who are well-versed in all aspects of leadership. Unfortunately, the skills that made healthcare leaders successful in the past may not be enough to be successful in the future. Managing change requires a very special set of skills. Project management, lean six sigma and other change processes all identify leadership as a key critical success factor. In fact, a recent study by the Healthcare Center for Excellence revealed that lack of leadership was the greatest challenge to implementing healthcare analytics. More alarming was the fact that those in leadership positions did not recognize their role in the change management process.Added to this is the confusing advice on what is needed to be a good leader, when, in actuality, all that is needed is for the leader to be them self. Leadership is a process that must be prescribed and practiced every day. It is the same way professional athletes worldwide have followed their prescribed training regimen to improve their already exceptional abilities."Prescribing Leadership in Healthcare" is based on the proprietary 5-step Professional Leadership Process which creates a personalized leadership development program built on an individual's innate qualities and strengths. It is designed as a continually improving process to help leaders at any level of the organization develop and adapt a personalized leadership vision and philosophy for utilization in their daily leadership routine. The program creates better leaders by incorporating the most often overlooked steps that research indicates are essential to better leadership development.Additionally, the book includes the leadership perspectives from interviews with top healthcare executives such as Dr. Toby Cosgrove (President & CEO, Cleveland Clinic), Dr. Laura Forese (Executive VP & COO, New York-Presbyterian), Dr. Michael Hunt (President & CEO, St. Vincent's Health Partners), Nancy Schlichting (Retired CEO, Henry Ford Health Systems) and others.REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS: "The lessons and practices in the book] will make all of us better leaders and most importantly, will directly benefit those patients and families we serve." -- David Feinberg, President & CEO, Geisinger Health"This is one of the best and most powerful leadership books I have read. I believe he has found an elixir for making all of us better leaders." -- Jim Mattes, President & CEO, Grande Ronde Hospital"I highly recommend reading and following Bryan's] leadership book. He is a remarkable person. The world needs more people like Bryan Bennett." -- Scott Becker, Publisher, Becker's Hospital Review"Prescribing Leadership in Healthcare is a book readers will want to come back to again and again." -- Tom Sullivan, Editor-in-Chief, Healthcare IT News
Small Rooms and Others is a stunning collection of essays and stories by James Bryan McGeever, a New York City school teacher. When McGeever accepts a position as an instructor at one of the most historic schools in the city, he unwittingly stumbles into the heart of billionaire Michael Bloomberg's era of mayoral control. As a result of the mayor's corporate version of education reform, McGeever's school is branded persistently dangerous and marked for closure.McGeever experiences a gauntlet of unexpected challenges, not only from his students, but administrators and politicians, as well. His favorite pupil vanishes, only to reemerge with devastating news; a gifted writer comes out to him in an essay, and there are army recruiters knocking at his door during class. When an attack occurs inside his classroom, McGeever navigates a warren of bureaucracy that lands him inside the city's infamous 'rubber room' for reassigned teachers. This tumultuous journey makes him worry if city schools are good enough for his own child. It brings conflict into his home, into his family affairs, and more importantly, it keeps him up at night.

Drug users are typically portrayed as worthless slackers, burdens on society, and just plain useless—culturally, morally, and economically. By contrast, this book argues that the social construction of some people as useless is in fact extremely useful to other people. Leading medical anthropologists Merrill Singer and J. Bryan Page analyze media representations, drug policy, and underlying social structures to show what industries and social sectors benefit from the criminalization, demonization, and even popular glamorization of addicts. Synthesizing a broad range of key literature and advancing innovative arguments about the social construction of drug users and their role in contemporary society, this book is an important contribution to public health, medical anthropology, popular culture, and related fields.

This historical account concerns the deeds of the most notable members of the Boone and Bryan families, who trace their lineage back to the Medieval-era, later becoming distinguished colonists of New England. The most notable person in this history is Daniel Boone, an explorer who led expeditions westward into Kentucky, founding the first colonial settlement there. He would later serve in the military in the American War of Independence. Rather than focus on Daniel's deeds and achievements, this account seeks to establish the family tree of both the Boone and Bryan families. The lives of various relations, their place of living, and the trades which they practiced, are listed. We learn that the two families' history is shared even going back to the Middle Ages, both clans being Irish with lineages stretching back into the Medieval era of the kings. A history of the Bryans who lived in these far-gone times is also told, showing us how the name was passed down until the time of the migrations to North America commenced in the 17th century.
