Members of TV audiences were studied to analyze their reactions to what TV offered them, in relation to their age, sex, social class, and personal characteristics. This information is here applied to understanding what television programs, performers, and commercials--by general type and also with illustrative case histories--are being watched. This book on first publication in 1962 provided the first clear image of the people in front of their TV sets, who they were, how they differed from each other, their views on sex and violence, boredom and enlightenment, taste and judgment. It tells us about the audiences and our stereotypes and their response to the new medium they could both see and hear. It destroys the myth of the "mass audience" and replaces it with a scientifically derived description of the many audiences for television, including its protesters, its embracers, and its accommodators. Programs looked at range from those still in production forty years later--The Price is Right--to those in perpetual rerun--The Twilight Zone---to those genres, like westerns, that have all but disappeared, and those that still prosper, like soap operas--in this case, 77 Sunset Strip. A section on performer images and their symbolic meanings considers television personas from Bob Hope through Walter Cronkite to Roy Rogers and Pat Boone. The final section analyzes commercials both by type and by placement and what audiences feel about them.

This document details U.S. government spending on cooperative science and technology activities with Russia. The U.S. government spent, on average, 300 million dollars a year during the 1990s to support science and technology (S&T) cooperation with Russia. This document details U.S. government spending on cooperative S&T activities with Russian partners. RAND collected and analyzed data at the project level and surveyed agency officials about specific projects and programs. These data were aggregated by spending into categories created by RAND. The report thus provides an analytic, cross-agency overview, presenting a broad picture of the U.S.-Russia S&T relationship between 1994 and 2000. The U.S. government's projects with Russia have a slightly different pattern than can be observed with other scientifically advanced countries: They are more binational in character, less collaborative, more technology-based, less of a shared effort, and dominated more by spending in aerospace applications. Reports from scientists working with Russian counterparts indicate that the United States is gaining significant scientific benefit from this joint collaboration. Although funding for the U.S.-Russia S&T relationship seems to have dropped in 2001, there has been a revived interest within the U.S. scientific community in working with Russia and an increase in the number of projects being considered.

The verrucarins and roridins are secondary metabolites of the soil fungi Myrothecium verrucaria (Albertini et Schweinitz) Ditmar ex Fries and Myrothecium roridum Tode ex Fries. The species Myrothecium belongs to the fungi imperfecti, order of Moniliales, family Tubercularia- ceae (30, 17, 32). The distinction between these and other closely related fungal species is difficult. It has been studied and discussed by various authors (82, 16, 55, 75, 62, 43). Myrothecium species are parasitic on leaves of Gardenia, tomatoes, violets, kidney beans, snapdragons and other common plants. They are also found on decaying tissue and in soil. It was known earlier that cultures of the two species mentioned exhibit cellulolytic properties due to the presence of a very active cellulase which was used for the treatment of cellulose during the production of textiles [for leading references see (42, 66)]. The first investigation of the secondary metabolites of these micro- organisms was carried out by BRIAN and MCGOWAN (16). They isolated a crystalline compound, designated as glutinosin and assigned the formula C4sH60016, from cultures of Metarrhizium glutinosum S. Pope, which in fact is a Myrothecium species (82, 55). Glutinosin exhibited anti- fungal activity. Eight years later BOWDEN and SCHANTZ (14) described the isolation and characterization of a dermatitic or skinirritating crystal- line compound melting at 38 , and possessing the formula C H 04, 1s 22 from culture filtrates of Myrothecium verrucaria. They suspected the presence of additional biologically active substances.
