Volume V deals with the problems of turnover in the nervous system. "Turnover" is defined in different ways, and the term is used in different contexts. It is used rather broadly in the present volume, and intentionally so. The turnover of macromolecules is only one aspect; here "turnover" in dicates the simultaneous and coordinated formation and breakdown of macromolecular species. The complexities of cerebral protein turnover are shown in a separate chapter dealing with the synthesis of proteins, in another on breakdown, and in still another on the relationship of these two (showing how the two halves of turnover are controlled). The fact that most likely the two halves of protein turnover, synthesis and breakdown, are separated spatially and the mechanisms involved are different further emphasizes the complexity of macromolecular turnover. "Turnover" is used in a different context when the turnover of a cycle is discussed; but here again a number of complex metabolic reactions have to be interrelated and controlled; some such cycles are discussed briefly in this volume, additional cycles have been discussed with metabolism, and some cycles still await elucidation or discovery.

An anthology and compilation of short stories, flash fiction, contributions from the 'isolation writers, ' plus poetry written during the time of lockdown in the UK. "A Piece of Living History "This anthology and compilation is for everyone, wherever you live in the world. We are all experiencing the impact of COVID19 and lockdown. The contributors come from as far afield as Australia, Canada, USA and Zimbabwe, or closer to my current home in England - in Ireland, Scotland and Italy. It is as Willow Willers, a contributor said, 'A piece of living history.'This extraordinary and unexpected time period will be shared with future generations one day.Compiling and editing this anthology has given me a purpose over the period of Lockdown and for that I am grateful. The reader will get an overview of the past and present research in all fields of Surface Science. Readers not familiar with a given field will benefit from the tutorial character of the Introductions, as a rule present in every chapter. Throughout the book emphasis is mainly given to clean surfaces although sometimes adsorbate-covered surfaces are also accounted for. Many readers will be particularly interested in chapters dealing with recently developed topics (graphene, nanotubes, metal oxides, solid-liquid interfaces, theoretical simulations, manipulation of atoms at surfaces with the methods of scanning probe microscopy, Casimir effect, etc.), for which research is continuously evolving. As it is customary in the LB Series, the results obtained in a given field are quoted as thoroughly as possible. The most relevant among them are presented in the form of figures (or tables), and comments or comparisons with other results are usually provided.
