Political Dreams and Musical Themes in the 1848–1922 Formation of Czechoslovakia: Interaction of National and Global Forces characterizes the 1918–22 formation of Czechoslovakia as a consequence of political and musical expressions. Nationalist expressions and formations were striking after the 1848 Revolution. The authors explore how the music of Smetana, Janácek, and Dvorák inspired people with reminders about the important achievements of past Bohemian leaders. Under the control of the Vienna-based Habsburg Empire, Czech leaders also achieved more political representation in both Habsburg and Bohemian legislatures, and Slovaks made some national progress in at least asserting their demands to Budapest and its controlling Magyar Empire. During the early twentieth century, there was additional pressure to link up these nationalist movements in both music and politics with regional “modernist” approaches that were increasingly popular in other parts of Europe. The outbreak of World War I in 1914 opened up opportunities, such as joint participation in the Czechoslovak Legion, for the two key ethnic groups to forge a Czechoslovak state. Independence took place, with considerable western support, on October 28, 1918, and the commemorative concert two days later of compositions by Josef Suk put the final stamp on a considerable achievement that bore the hallmarks of globalism as well as nationalism.

Error-Correcting Codes, by Professor Peterson, was originally published in 1961. Now, with E. J. Weldon, Jr., as his coauthor, Professor Peterson has extensively rewritten his material. The book contains essentially all of the material of the first edition; however, the authors state that because there has been so much new work published in error-correcting codes, the preparation of this second edition proved to be a much greater task than writing the original book. The major additions are the chapters on majority-logic codes, synchronization, and convolutional codes. Much new material has also been added to the chapters on important linear block codes and cyclic codes. The authors cite some highly regarded books on recent work done in Eastern Europe and an extensive bibliography on coding theory in the Soviet Union [sic]. In its much-expanded form, Error-Correcting Codes may be considered another valuable contribution to computer coding.

Die koronare Herzkrankheit fordert in allen zivilisierten Landern einen hohen Zoll an Mortalitat und Morbiditat. Es ist deshalb notwendig, nach Wegen zu suchen, dieser - zumindest in Deutsch- land ungebrochenen -Entwicklung Einhalt zu gebieten. In manchen Fallen genugt allein schon eine Anamnese, um relativ fruh und mit hoher Treffsicherheit eine Myokardischamie auf dem Boden einer stenosierenden Koronarsklerose zu diagnostizieren. In den meisten Fallen sind jedoch wei- tergehende diagnostische Schritte zum Ausschluss oder zur Bestatigung einer koronaren Herz- krankheit erforderlich. Das vorliegende Buch will praktische Wege aufzeigen, die mit moeglichst geringem Aufwand zu einer adaquaten Diagnose fuhren. Deshalb ist bei der Darstellung der verschiedenen Krankheits- stadien bzw. Symptomkonstellationen stets auf ein ausgewogenes Verhaltnis zwischen diagnosti- schem Aufwand und moeglichen therapeutischen Konsequenzen abgehoben. Entsprechend ihrer diagnostischen Wertigkeit werden zunachst die nichtinvasiven Methoden dargestellt. Dabei gilt dem Belastungs-EKG als dem wohl wichtigsten Parameter unser besonderes Augenmerk. Neben zahlreichen subtilen technischen Details findet der Leser Angaben uber Treffsicherheit und Gren- zen dieser Methode. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird auch dem Stellenwert eventuell notwendi- ger erganzender Untersuchungsmethoden gewidmet, wie u. a. der konventionellen Roentgendia- gnostik, der Echokardiographie und der Nuklearmedizin. Die Verfasser sind der Meinung, dass die Koronarangiographie in jedem Falle einer strengen Indikation bedarf. Andererseits darf den Patienten, fur die lebenswichtige therapeutische Mass- nahmen von dieser Untersuchung abhangen, die Koronarangiographie nicht vorenthalten werden.
