Pell’s Equation

Pell’s Equation

Edward J. Barbeau

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2003
sidottu
Pell's equation is part of a central area of algebraic number theory that treats quadratic forms and the structure of the rings of integers in algebraic number fields. It is an ideal topic to lead college students, as well as some talented and motivated high school students, to a better appreciation of the power of mathematical technique. Even at the specific level of quadratic diophantine equations, there are unsolved problems, and the higher degree analogues of Pell's equation, particularly beyond the third, do not appear to have been well studied. In this focused exercise book, the topic is motivated and developed through sections of exercises which will allow the readers to recreate known theory and provide a focus for their algebraic practice. There are several explorations that encourage the reader to embark on their own research. A high school background in mathematics is all that is needed to get into this book, and teachers and others interested in mathematics who do not have (or have forgotten) a background in advanced mathematics may find that it is a suitable vehicle for keeping up an independent interest in the subject.

This guide will level the playing field for many young men from every walk of life who are struggling and it will strengthen those who have been fortunate to live in supportive environments. Reading this book will empower you to become a wise, resilient, and healthy man, and also a loving husband, and a wonderful father Elevate Yourself to Manhood may be read on your own, with a buddy, or in a book club. Throughout history, successful men have collaborated on quests and achieved much glory. Columbus and Lewis and Clark come to mind. Just commit to reading this book. May God be with you on your journey. Growing up is a challenge. Life is a challenge. Elevate Yourself to Manhood is a guide that will empower young men twelve years of age and up on their quest to become healthy, wise, courageous, and confident men. Young men will find tools that will help them develop their minds and their bodies, connect with their spirit and hone their character, while preparing for family life, social participation, and their legacy. Whether the young man is yourself, a friend, your son, a grandson, a nephew, or a neighbor's son Elevate Yourself to Manhood can provide support and strength. The authors wish they had this book at their disposal as their sons were growing up. Authors, Donell Cox and Elaine J. Barbeau Cox care deeply for the welfare of all young men. They hope Elevate Yourself to Manhood will help to improve their lives and, perhaps, even save their lives. Also, the authors see young men as the backbone of future families, communities, and societies and they want to afford them every opportunity for winning their rightful place in the world.

This book is a country walk through the magical world of numbers. Most people will have recognised some of the fascinating patterns exhibited by many numbers; some of these indicate a deep and complex structure which is revealed in this book in a way that is accessible to all, from amateur to expert. The author focusses on powers of numbers, which have been studied from the time of Pythagoras until the present day, with the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. Indeed some of the results described by the author were only established quite recently, giving the book a very contemporary flavour. In sum, this will make a stimulating resource for teachers of mathematics, and will be as well a fund of knowledge for amateurs.

Mistakes in mathematical reasoning can range from outlandish blunders to deep and subtle oversights that evade even the most watchful eye. This book represents the second collection of such errors to be compiled by Edward Barbeau. Like Barbeau's previous book, Mathematical Fallacies, Flaws and Flimflam, material is drawn from a variety of sources including the work of students, textbooks, the media, and even professional mathematicians. The errors presented here serve both to entertain, and to emphasise the need to subject even the most 'obvious' assertions to rigorous scrutiny, as intuition and facile reasoning can often be misleading. Each item is carefully analysed and the source of the error is exposed. All students and teachers of mathematics, from school to university level, will find this book both enlightening and entertaining.

This text records the problems given for the first 15 annual undergraduate mathematics competitions, held in March each year since 2001 at the University of Toronto. Problems cover areas of single-variable differential and integral calculus, linear algebra, advanced algebra, analytic geometry, combinatorics, basic group theory, and number theory. The problems of the competitions are given in chronological order as presented to the students. The solutions appear in subsequent chapters according to subject matter. Appendices recall some background material and list the names of students who did well. The University of Toronto Undergraduate Competition was founded to provide additional competition experience for undergraduates preparing for the Putnam competition, and is particularly useful for the freshman or sophomore undergraduate. Lecturers, instructors, and coaches for mathematics competitions will find this presentation useful. Many of the problems are of intermediate difficulty and relate to the first two years of the undergraduate curriculum. The problems presented may be particularly useful for regular class assignments. Moreover, this text contains problems that lie outside the regular syllabus and may interest students who are eager to learn beyond the classroom.

The book extends the high school curriculum and provides a backdrop for later study in calculus, modern algebra, numerical analysis, and complex variable theory. Exercises introduce many techniques and topics in the theory of equations, such as evolution and factorization of polynomials, solution of equations, interpolation, approximation, and congruences. The theory is not treated formally, but rather illustrated through examples. Over 300 problems drawn from journals, contests, and examinations test understanding, ingenuity, and skill. Each chapter ends with a list of hints; there are answers to many of the exercises and solutions to all of the problems. In addition, 69 "explorations" invite the reader to investigate research problems and related topics.
