First published in 1973, this book gives an account of some of the more important models which have been proposed for studying the growth of human populations, with a particular emphasis on stochastic models. Despite the practical importance of the subject, at the time of original publication there had been little connection between these models and their possible applications. The book drew together, for the first time, the theoretical analysis of the mathematician and the practical problems of the actuary. Exercises are set at the end of each chapter and brief solutions appear at the back of the text. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest mathematical models and statistics.
This handbook is designed for experimental scientists, particularly those in the life sciences. It is for the non-specialist, and although it assumes only a little knowledge of statistics and mathematics, those with a deeper understanding will also find it useful. The book is directed at the scientist who wishes to solve his numerical and statistical problems on a programmable calculator, mini-computer or interactive terminal. The volume is also useful for the user of full-scale computer systems in that it describes how the large computer solves numerical and statistical problems. The book is divided into three parts. Part I deals with numerical techniques and Part II with statistical techniques. Part III is devoted to the method of least squares which can be regarded as both a statistical and numerical method. The handbook shows clearly how each calculation is performed. Each technique is illustrated by at least one example and there are worked examples and exercises throughout the volume.

Short Artist Biography - J H Amshewitz was the son of a Rabbi on the staff on Montefiore College, England. His precocious talent attracted the attention of leading Academicians and led to his admission on a scholarship to Royal Academy Schools. - 1907 J H Amshewitz won commission for murals in City Hall, Liverpool; broke his thigh in a fall while working on that commission. - 1910 J H Amshewitz commissioned to paint murals for Royal Exchange, London. The two important mural undertakings drew attention to the young artist and other recognition followed. - 1914 J H Amshewitz was rejected by the .................................... Israel Zangwill (21 January 1864 - 1 August 1926) was a British author at the forefront of cultural Zionism during the 19th century, and was a close associate of Theodor Herzl. He later rejected the search for a Jewish homeland and became the prime thinker behind the territorial movement. Early life and education: Zangwill was born in London on 21 January 1864, in a family of Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire. His father, Moses Zangwill, was from what is now Latvia, and his mother, Ellen Hannah Marks Zangwill, was from what is now Poland. He dedicated his life to championing the cause of people he considered oppressed, becoming involved with topics such as Jewish emancipation, Jewish assimilation, territorialism, Zionism, and women's suffrage. His brother was novelist Louis Zangwill. Zangwill received his early schooling in Plymouth and Bristol. When he was nine years old, Zangwill was enrolled in the Jews' Free School in Spitalfields in east London, a school for Jewish immigrant children. The school offered a strict course of both secular and religious studies while supplying clothing, food, and health care for the scholars; presently one of its four houses is named Zangwill in his honour. At this school he excelled and even taught part-time, eventually becoming a full-fledged teacher. While teaching, he studied for his degree from the University of London, earning a BA with triple honours in 1884....
