Computer Simulations of Protein Structures and Interactions

Computer Simulations of Protein Structures and Interactions

Serafin Fraga; J.M.Robert Parker; Jennifer M. Pocock

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH Co. K
1995
nidottu
Protein engineering endeavors to design new peptides and proteins or to change the structural and/or functional characteristics of existing ones for specific purposes, opening the way for the development of new drugs. This work develops in a comprehensive way the theoretical formulation for the methods used in computer-assisted modeling and predictions, starting from the basic concepts and proceeding to the more sophisticated methods, such as Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics. An evaluation of the approximations inherent to the simulations will allow the reader to obtain a perspective of the possible deficiencies and difficulties and approach the task with realistic expectations. Examples from the authors laboratories, as well as from the literature provide useful information.

"Churchill's Gambit" is a fascinating account of the unexplained World War II flight of Rudolf Hess to Great Britain in an attempted peace overture between Germany and England. But, was it actually a bold move of deception by Winston Churchill to actually split the German/Russian alliance and gain for England a powerful ally against Adolf Hitler? This thrilling novel explores an explanation, while set upon a backdrop of American and British leaders. A story of WWII drama, intrigue, and romance.
Alcohol and Violence

Many people have experienced or witnessed situations in which people drinking alcohol get aggressive, obnoxious, and violent. Scientific research has shown evidence of a relationship between alcohol and violence, and even evidence that alcohol plays a role in causing violent and aggressive responses. The book explores a number of aspects of this relationship. If you have been drinking are you more likely to be a victim of crime? If victimized, does drinking alcohol make you more likely to be injured? How does availability of alcohol in the community influence rates of violence among Mexican American youth? Does advertising that links sex and alcohol result in higher rates of sexual assault in Latino neighborhoods? How do elementary school children react to experimentation with drugs, alcohol, and aggression? Do countries outside the United States have alcohol and violence problems, and do these impact men and women differently? We presents original research that shows the depths and conditions under which alcohol and violence are linked, further strengthening the evidence that alcohol use and availability is an important factor in violence in our cities, neighborhoods, school, and homes. The good news is that we regulate alcohol use and availability effectively, with a body of established laws and procedures. We can, therefore, find ways using this existing system to develop new ways to prevent the alcohol related violence studied here. The second half of the book begins this task by laying out the principles of environmental prevention, a strategy that has been very successful in a number of health and safety related domains. The next four chapters show just how environmental prevention strategies have worked, and worked very effectively, to lower rates of violence by reducing alcohol availability and alcohol consumption. The research reported here shows communities different approaches and mechanisms to achieve reductions in violence, and they provide a road map for communities everywhere to follow suit and reduce alcohol related violence. Reducing violence can be accomplished, everyone can do it if they work together, and the result is a safer and better society.

British Prime Ministers

There is a distinct lack of readily available information about the British prime ministers, especially as a group. There are thick biographies of the big names Pitt, Gladstone, Churchill - but who were the others? There are plenty of short booklets and pamphlets for all the monarchs but little or nothing on most of the fifty-three PMs. What better way to introduce these individuals than through a short, accurate review of each Prime Minister, briefly describing their background and influence, their role in British history and in major world events. On closer inspection, the PMs are revealed to be more colourful figures than might be imagined, whose unique personalities and individual deeds shaped important historical events. British Prime Ministersoffers a handy and accessible guide to all of Britain’s heads of government, from Sir Robert Walpole right through to Boris Johnson, thereby lifting the veil of obscurity from an all-too-neglected cast of characters.

England holds the unique position as the cradle of modern democratic parliamentary government while simultaneously retaining one of the world's longest-running monarchies. The Kings & Queens of England offers a concise and penetrating review of not only the lives and personalities of the monarchs but also the impact and ramifications of their reign on England and the world. Strong and weak, young and old, cruel and tolerant, successful and failed, and the multiple combinations thereof, the story of England's kings and queens is a rich tapestry of history, reflecting a nation that has commanded the world's attention for over 1,000 years.

It seems absurd to claim it, but the Battle of Passchendaele was in many ways worse than the Somme. The British offensive, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, was launched on the Belgium battlefield at 3.30 a.m. on 31 July 1917. It was a massive effort by General Sir Douglas Haig and the British Army to achieve a strategic breakthrough and defeat Germany. Attrition would defeat a Germany that was, many believed, ‘on the ropes’. Just one more ‘big push’ would secure victory – yet it failed. Passchendaele continued until November 1917 and became synonymous with the tragedy of the Great War: abominable weather, mud and filth; horrific injuries inflicted by increasingly industrialised warfare including tanks, gas, mines and flamethrowers; the enormous casualties (600,000) and the futility of the operation all combined to form a nightmare vision of war in the trenches. What was life like for the ordinary British soldier? Was the whole bloody effort necessary or were there alternatives? What, if anything, did it achieve? Passchendaele 1917 answers these questions while reminding us of the sacrifices and heroism of the soldiers who fought it.

The Battle of the Somme epitomised the cruelty of the Western Front. 1 July 1916 witnessed the opening round of the British Army’s attempt to break through an eighteen-mile front of heavily defended German lines straddling the River Somme in northern France. Preceded by an artillery bombardment of over 1,500 big guns that lasted a week, the inexperienced members of Lord Kitchener’s New Army went ‘over the top’ and suffered the deadliest day in British military history. On the first day, British losses alone totalled nearly 20,000 dead. In the next four and a half months of combat, over 350,000 British soldiers would become casualties to one of the most intense, lethal, and futile engagements in history.

Immortalised for a new generation in the graphic opening sequences of Saving Private Ryan, ‘Bloody’ Omaha Beach was almost an epic failure. Among the five beaches stormed as part of the 6 June 1944 D-Day assault, the Allied invasion met its greatest difficulty and uncertainty at Omaha Beach. Only at Omaha did the long anticipated Operation Overlord, and the re-entry of the Allied armies into France, threaten to fail in its execution. Reviewing the preparation and planning by the various Allied assault groups designated for Omaha Beach, author Robert Parker provides a lively description of one of the greatest and most important military endeavours in all of world history. Concentrating on Day 1, he captures the drama, intensity, and struggle of this effort and the opening of the vital second front leading to the defeat of Nazi Germany, illustrated with seventy images and maps, many in colour.

On frequent trips to the UK, U.S. citizen Robert Parker was puzzled by the lack of readily available information about the British prime ministers, especially as a group. There are thick biographies of Churchill, Disraeli, and Pitt, but who were the others? There are plenty of short booklets and pamphlets for all of the monarchs but little or nothing on most of the fifty-three PMs. As an American, Robert was brought up on countless books of all lengths and sizes detailing the lives and accomplishments of the U.S. presidents, but he could find nothing of the sort in Britain's bookshops or tourist locations that chronicles the careers of the prime ministers. This is somewhat ironic as England is the birthplace of modern representative parliamentary government. What better way to introduce these individuals than through a short, accurate, and comprehensive review of each prime minister, briefly describing their background and influence, their role in British history and in major world events. On closer inspection, the PMs are revealed to be more colourful figures than might be imagined, whose unique personalities and individual deeds shaped important historical events. British Prime Ministers will offer a handy and accessible guide to all the UK's heads of government, thereby lifting the veil of obscurity from an all too neglected cast of characters.
International Labor Organizations and Organized Labor in Latin America and the Caribbean
The first scholarly work to focus exclusively on the roles of pan-regional and worldwide labor organizations in the labor movements across the nations of the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. With a career that covers over a half century, Robert J. Alexander is perhaps our foremost authority on Latin American history and politics. In International Labor Organizations and Organized Labor in Latin America and the Caribbean: A History, Alexander explores one of the most fascinating and often overlooked aspects of the Latin American labor scene he has so meticulously chronicled: the relationships between labor unions within specific nations, region wide organizations, and organized labor around the world.Alexander has written many of the cornerstone works on labor movements within the nations of Latin America, and this is his first volume to focus on the impact of international unions on Latin American labor issues. Coverage includes the AFL-offshoot Pan American Federation of Labor and the CIA-backed AIFLD; the role of the Russian Union, Profintern; European-based unions like the anti-Communist/anti-Fascist Postal Telegraph and Telephone International; and intraregional organizations like the Confederacion de Trabajadores de America Latina (CTAL)—the first attempt to form a multinational labor organization exclusively for the region.Numerous original documents from the various organizations covered in the bookWide-ranging bibliographic materials, including original interviews by the author with numerous people who participated in the various institutions that are written about in this volume

The time of globalization has seen an onslaught of criminal activity that crosses borders. The legal suppression and prosecution of transnational and cross-border crime raise unique and complex legal issues, and law enforcement, lawyers, and judges have struggled to keep up. Transnational & Cross-Border Criminal Law: Canadian Perspectives fills a pronounced gap in Canadian legal literature. Written by subject matter experts, each chapter exposes and analyzes a current and pressing issue in this realm and is designed both to serve as a resource for researchers and to provide cutting-edge insight on front-burner issues. The group of authors -- made up of prosecutors, defence lawyers, government counsel, academics, and civil society advocates -- take on a variety of subjects, including terrorism, financial crime and corruption, jurisdiction, extradition, money laundering, trafficking, maritime enforcement, cross-border evidence-gathering, and the international transfer of prisoners. This unique collection will help to advance general understanding of one of the most pressing public policy issues of our time.

This single-volume book contends that reshaping the paradigm of American Indian identity, blood quantum, and racial distinctions can positively impact the future of the Indian community within America and America itself. This academic compendium examines the complexities associated with Indian identity in North America, including the various social, political, and legal issues impacting Indian expression in different periods; the European influence on how self-governing tribal communities define the rights of citizenship within their own communities; and the effect of Indian mascots, Thanksgiving, and other cultural appropriations taking place within American society on the Indian community. The book looks at and proposes solutions to the controversies surrounding the Indian tribal nations and their people. The authors—all leading advocates of Indian progress—argue that tribal governments and communities should reconsider the notion of what comprises Indian identity, and in doing so, they compare and contrast how indigenous people around the world define themselves and their communities. Chapters address complex questions under the discourse of Indian law, history, philosophy, education, political science, anthropology, art, psychology, and civil rights. Topics covered in depth include blood quantum, racial distinctions, First Nations, and tribal citizenship.
