"A Plato Primer" introduces beginning students and the general reader to the main theses, concepts and arguments in Plato's philosophy. Subtle, versatile and multi-faceted though Plato's thought undoubtedly is, it has a core that needs to be explored and savoured. Evans presents this core, as it appears over a large range of his works, spread out over many decades of composition and many philosophical topics. Through all this diversity Plato's original philosophical personality shines through. Evans approaches the material thematically, in terms of modern philosophical categories, in seven main chapters. Within each of these individual treatments Evans follows the lines of argument in the main works of Plato that explore them. Indications about how to pursue given topics in the secondary literature are given in the helpful guide to further reading.

"Plato was more than a philosopher; he was a master of literary composition who frequently wrote in a colorful style. At the heart of his work there is material as definitively philosophical as anything in the most technical works in the twenty-four centuries that have followed his pioneering labors."—from the IntroductionA Plato Primer introduces students and general readers to the main theses, concepts, and arguments in Plato's philosophy. Plato's thought—subtle, versatile, and multifaceted—extends over many decades of composition and many philosophical topics, making it difficult to distill. J. D. G. Evans overcomes this challenge by starting from the premise that there is a core to Plato's philosophy that can be traced through the spectrum of his writings. He opens with a chapter on the Republic, Plato's major work; he then singles out a particular theme from the Republic for treatment in each of the six subsequent chapters. These themes, which correspond to modern philosophical categories (Knowledge, Reality, Dialectic, Value, Causality and Change, Politics), enable Evans to bring other Platonic works into his discussion. Featuring a useful "Further Reading" section for those wishing to pursue given topics in the secondary literature, A Plato Primer is a wide-ranging and compelling analysis of the original philosophical personality shining through the body of Plato's writings.

For more than three decades investment in the transport sector has been a priority for developing country governments. With a few exceptions, roads have accounted for the major part of these investments. The explicit, and often articulated, assumption upon which the decision to allocate such large sums of money to road transport has been made is that road transport and development are inextricably linked. The implicit, and rarely articulated assumption is that the provision of suitable roads will lead to the operation of an adequate level of road transport services. If roads do not actually produce economic development, it has been argued, they certainly play a major role. This belief in the ben-eficial effects of roads is not wholly unsubstantiated. Clearly the provision of some form of access is vital for the development of the rural economy. Nevertheless, the studies carried out over the last 10-15 years on the impact of highway investment have sounded a cautionary note. George W. Wilson, writing in the concluding chapter of the Brookings Institution studies on transport and development, suggested that* 'A much more sceptical attitude towards transport appears essential and far more attention needs to be devoted to the set of circumstances surrounding expansion of transport capacity'. 1 The suggestion of a more restrained attitude reflected a growing concern that transport, and in particular roads, was only one factor amongst a large number that needed to be integrated for effective development. The concern to see road transport in a wider context partly explains the move towards the evaluation of the social, as well as strictly economic, benefits of road construction.

Nature is wild and eagles and wolves will never be lovers. But certainly Poetry can overcome every obstacle and translates our dreams, desires, passions, .. in images that evoke even a new, different Universe It fulfills the very nature of poetry that we 7 poets publish our poems in a common anthology and witness how these diverse poems reflect each other, relate to each other, amplify each other This Anthology of Poetry collects 72 poems from 7 Authors living in 7 different Countries of the World. As Fabrizio Frosini puts it: When I first proposed this idea for a book to my Minnesotan friend Daniel Brick, we decided together to open it to other "voices of poetry" from different parts of our troubled world. Maybe we put it a bit too emphatically, like "voices of poetry conveying the joy of creativity," to point out the real issues of human passions mediated through poetry. Yet, Poetry is a sum of hope and despair. It is a sum of wishes, hopes, dreams, inspirations, wanderings on the wings of Imagination. It is a long flight our hearts and minds took, revisiting reality, memories, expectations. Life itself is revisited through the multicolored glasses of poetry. As Dylan Thomas wrote: "These poems, with all their crudities, doubts, and confusions, are written for the love of Man" and, I add, they are written out of the joy of creativity, even when created in the darkest moments of despairing depression. Everyone who reads our poetry enters our own Universe -even if for a while. Through Poetry, we all -Authors and Readers- are in touch.
