The purpose of this pamphlet is to educate the reader in the area of bullying behavior. Normally when people say bullying, they think of four types of participants. They are the bully, the victim, the follower, and the bystander. My assemblies place the greatest emphasis on participant number five, the leader. A leader is a person who quits being a bystander and performs an act of love for the victim. I have discovered from the students' letters as well as statements at the end of the assemblies that the only way bullying behavior is reduced or even eliminated is when the bystanders don't want it in their schools. As you read this pamphlet, picture yourself in your school auditorium. You are between 10 and 15 years old and one of the types of bully participants in every school. Are you a bully, a follower, a bystander, or a victim? I am making the assumption that the odds are great that you are not a leader. I was bullied in middle school. My story is captured in the pamphlet. I still remember being bullied like it happened yesterday. The pamphlet also shows the story of my son Curt being bullied in elementary and middle school. Perhaps these stories will remind you of the times spent in school.

When the authors were asked to prepare a Second Edition of the book Titanium the first question was timing. It was agreed that the new edition should be ready for the 11th World Conference of Titanium (Ti-2007) in Kyoto. This is four years after the First Edition was presented at the Ti-2003 conference in Hamburg. F- ther, the authors decided to keep the structure and content of the First Edition completely unchanged with the exception of correcting a few obvious mistakes. The Preface to the First Edition decribes the motivation and intent of the book. These also remain unchanged for the Second Edition. All of the new subjects are covered in the Second Edition as short sections which are placed at the end of the appropriate chapters. These new sections bear the title “Recent Developments since the First Edition”. In this way, it should be easy for both readers of the First Edition and for new readers to find those subjects which emerged during the last four years. The new subjects included in the book are from the technological side (Chap.

The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is designed to enhance security at U.S. ports. It demonstrates that the holder has passed a Transportation Security Administration security threat assessment and is required of anyone with unescorted access to a secure area at a regulated facility. This report provides the findings from an assessment of the TWIC program, along with the assessors' recommendations.

On any given day, nearly half a million children are served by foster care services in the U.S. at an annual cost of over $25 billion. Growing demand and shrinking funds have so greatly stressed the child welfare system that calls for orphanages have re-entered the public debate for the first time in nearly half a century. New ideas are desperately needed to transform a system in crisis, guarantee better outcomes for children in foster care, and reduce the need for out-of-home care in the first place. Yet little is known about what works in foster care. Very few studies have examined how alumni have fared as adults or tracked long-term health effects, and even fewer have directly compared different foster care services. In one of the most comprehensive studies of adults formerly in foster care ever conducted, the Northwest Foster Care Alumni Study found that quality foster care services for children pay big dividends when they grow into adults. Key investments in highly trained staff, low caseloads, and robust supplementary services can dramatically reduce the rates of mental disorders and substance abuse later in life and increase the likelihood of completing education beyond high school and remaining employed. The results of this unparalleled study document not only the more favorable outcomes for youth who receive better services but the overall return when an investment is made in high quality foster care: every dollar invested in a child generates $1.50 in benefits to society. These findings form the core of this book's blueprint for reform. By keeping more children with their families and investing additional funds in enhanced foster care services, child welfare agencies have the opportunity to greatly improve the health, well being, and economic prospects for foster care alumni. What Works in Foster Care? presents a model foster care program that promises to revolutionize the way policymakers, administrators, case workers, and researchers think about protecting our most vulnerable youth.

will probably be clarified by the continued cooperative efforts of scientists such as those in the group that met in Berlin last September. The staff of Dahlem Konferenzen is responsible for making the meeting of this group memorably pleasant and pleasantly mem- orable. Dr. Bernhard's gifts of charm, organizational skill, and administrative toughness assured that the conference was run elegantly, smoothly, and decisively, even down to the choice of editors for this volume. Marie Cervantes-Waldmann performed minor miracles extracting manuscripts gently but persistently from the authors and in turning the typescripts into a book. The other staff members of Dahlem Konferenzen were unfailingly helpful even under trying circumstances. They will be well rememberedbyall who were fortunate enough to be asked to Berlin for the first week in September, 1980. Mineral Deposits and the Evolution of the Biosphere, eds. H. D. Holland and M. Microbiologie, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitat, 5300 Bonn 1, F. R. Germany Abstract. Two microbial processes are involved in the sulfur cycle of the earth's biosphere: anoxic dissimilatory sulfur oxidation by phototrophic bacteria and dissimilatory sulfate reduction by sulfate-reducing bacteria. In the presence of oxygen at chemoclines and redoxclines dissimilatory sulfur oxidation by chemolithotrophic bacteria (Thiobacillus, Beg- giatoa, and others) occurs. In addition, dissimilatory sulfur reducing bacteria participate in the sulfur cycle.
How Effective was Field Marshal William Slim as an Operational Artist?
Field Marshal William 'Bill' Slim ended World War II in command of Fourteenth Army. His understanding of what motivated men in the most trying of times is well publicized. Indeed, he is most well-known for his thoughts on morale and leadership. This monograph seeks another aspect of Slim, his ability to command at the highest of formations. Focusing on his time in Burma, this paper covers from 1942-1945 and his time as a Corps and Army commander. Slim arrived in Burma in 1942 and assumed command of a corps at the worst possible moment. His two weak divisions were hammered by the Japanese Imperial Army and demoralized by poor leadership, a lack of equipment, and a fear of the jungle. Slim returned the battered remnants of I Burma Corps to India. Assuming command of XV Corps in India, Slim trained and prepared a force capable of defeating the Japanese. Using the tactic of an 'Administrative Box';, a defended locality resupplied by air, it was designed to defeat the Japanese tactics of envelopment. In 1944 Slim, as commander Fourteenth Army, deployed XV Corps and successfully defeated the Japanese for the first time in Burma. It was the tipping point. Following this success, others followed. This paper sets out the historical aspects of the three main campaigns managed by Slim. First it examines Slim's input and performance in the First and Second Arakan Campaigns. Second, his decisions at the defense of Kohima and Imphal and the subsequent break out of the Indian Army from those locations. Finally, it assesses the pinnacle of his generalship during Operations Capital and Extended Capital. Slim's performance warrants careful consideration. He commanded a diverse multinational army over extremely challenging terrain against a fanatically determined enemy. His decisions offer future operational artists guidance and prescient advice. His efforts are often overlooked because of the focus on the European theater. This monograph offers that Slim should come out from the sh This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
