Il testo analizza la figura dell'omosessuale nelle opere letterarie pubblicate tra l'Ottocento e il Novecento. Si parte da Oscar Wilde, pioniere di questo genere, con il suo De Profundis, per arrivare ai romanzi Maurice e Giovanni's Room di Edward Morgan Forster e James Baldwin. Il primo, inglese, omosessuale represso e insegnante al King's College di Londra, l'altro invece afroamericano e omosessuale dichiarato. Ripercorrendo il contesto socioculturale di entrambi, si approfondisce il ruolo ambivalente della stanza nella letteratura omosessuale, vista come il microcosmo ricreato dai protagonisti per vivere liberamente la propria sessualita, lontano dallo sguardo indiscreto e discriminatore della societa di allora, ma anche come l'inizio e la fine dell'io, a causa dell'omofobia che imprigiona l'individuo. Cosi, decifrando il significato simbolico che si nasconde dietro un luogo, un colore e un suono che spesso creano un'atmosfera opprimente, il lettore viene accompagnato in un viaggio tra fiction e realta.
