This study argues, based on the author's firsthand experience with five United Nations peacekeeping missions, that classic peacekeepers in the Cold War era could play a limited but nonetheless useful role in international conflict control. However, in the post-Cold War period, some new approaches to peacekeeping and ventures into enforcement have been unsuccessful, and the United Nations has lost much credibility in the art of peacekeeping. In a violent world, peacekeeping will always play a minor supporting role to traditional diplomacy among the great powers and to coalition and alliance efforts to control conflict. The author's involvement in peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, Iran-Iraq, and other parts of the Middle East over the period from 1967 to 1990 gives him a rare and informed perspective on peacekeeping.
From War to Peace in 1945 Germany

As an Official Army Photographer, "Mac" Fleming's assignment was to take motion pictures of significant wartime events for the US Army. In the pouch intended to carry his first-aid kit on his belt, he instead carried a small personal camera, which he used to take pictures of the people and places that interested him, capturing in his field notes details of the life he observed. From these records, Fleming has assembled this absorbing private chronicle of war and peace. Assigned to the European Theater in February 1945, he filmed the action from the battle for the Remagen Bridge across the Rhine, to the fighting in the Hartz Mountains, on to the linkup with the Russian forces at the Elbe River. After the armistice, Fleming helped document how the Allied Expeditionary Force established a military government in Germany to cope with masses of POWs, establish control of the country, deal with the atrocities committed by the German army, and help thousands of newly released slave laborers return home to Poland, France, and Russia. He also recorded how the army provided rest, recreation, and rehabilitation to the remaining US soldiers and sent them home by truck, train, and ship. Awaiting shipment home, Fleming explored postwar German town and country life and toured some famous castles and historic spots. The foreword by historian James H. Madison describes the important role of photography in war and the special contribution of Fleming's photographic diary.

Preaching the Gospel is at the heart of ministry and is often the core of the pastor's job. It's also often the most public part of the profession. Week after week, the pastor must deliver a message to the congregation that is both cogent and relevant to the lives of the people in the pews. Much study and research goes into the crafting of this message. Pastors begin this study in seminary, and it becomes a life-long pursuit. In Peace / Shalom, James Durlesser and Ron Love have created a volume designed to not only provide thorough exegesis of the biblical theme of Peace / Shalom, but also how that exegesis can be applied to the daily living of the Christian. Throughout this book, the reader will not only find information about how the subject of peace permeates the scriptural canon but will also discover many ways to help the person in the pew have a better understanding of Peace in Scripture as it applies to today's world, and how it applies to their individual lives.

It is said that California has the most complete recorded history of any state in the Union. Contemporaries called James H. (Henry) Carson's "sketches" as the most correct eye-witness reports of early California. The U. S. Congress declared war on Mexico in May 1846, and sent four units to occupy and hold Alta California, with a view to its acquisition. Sgt. Carson's Co. F, 3d Reg., Artillery, the "pioneer company," arrived in California in January 1847, after a five-months' voyage around the Horn; the Panama Canal was not yet built. In 1847 Carson served as commissary sergeant at 10th Military District Headquarters. In this capacity he obtained food supplies from the Califor-nios and shared in their social life, making him an important person at Monterey, capital of Alta California. He was one of the few who did not desert his post when gold was discovered in January 1848. In June-July he accompanied R. B. Mason, Col. 1st Dragoons, and Lt. W. T. Sherman (later Gen. Sherman of Civil War fame) on the first official tour of the Northern Gold Mines. In August 1848, on furlough, he discovered Carson Hill, classic gold mining ground of California. In July 1849 he traveled with Gen. B. Riley, Acting Governor of California and Lt. G. H. Derby on a tour of the Southern Mines. Upon discharge from the Army in November 1849, he elected to remain in California, and became a miner. In May 1850 he served as guide to Lt. Derby, Topographical Engineers, on the first official survey of San Joaquin Valley. It was here he contracted a fatal disease. He wrote his "sketches" during this period of inactivity until his death at Stockton on Dec. 12, 1853, aged thirty-two years. Carson was a keen observer, and wrote about California's mineral and agricultural resources; land titles and public domain; establishing a state capital; the first State Legislature. He "saw the elephant." He learned to laugh at himself, and his writings reflected a broad humor as he wrote about his fellowmen

John W. Campbell wrote this for a blurb for this tale when it appeared in Analog: He contracted for a charter trip -- but the man who hired his spacer wasn't quite a man, it turned out -- and he wanted more than service James H. Schmitz was a heck of a writer, and this story -- "The Winds of Time" -- is fascinating stuff. Star ships, aliens from the future, time travel, romance, cannibalism, pet humans, and mute-but-brilliant aliens. . . . and, of course, it's got a hero who solves every problem by being smarter and trickier and better-prepared than we'd ever imagine being. But what would you expect? This story first appeared in John W. Campbell's Analog. Analog heroes did it with their brains. Us? We have to work.
