The Guy in the Green Truck

The Guy in the Green Truck

Spotlighting one man's choice to abandon security for chance, this biographical memoir relates the inspiring story of John St. Amand, who left a promising career as a sociologist-along with handsome health and retirement benefits-to take on the turbulent life of a union organizer. Documenting one of his first campaigns in which he crisscrossed industrial Cape Breton signing up workers to the new Canadian Miner's Union, this narrative recollects how, because of his preferred mode of transportation, he became known as "the guy in the green truck." Forming a tribute to a courageous fighter who banished any thoughts of defeat in the face of lost campaigns and worked tirelessly to bring hope and justice to the oppressed and neglected, this exploration portrays Amand's steadfast dedication to all working men and women.

For many foreign observers, Brazil still conjures up a collage of exotic images, ranging from the camp antics of Carmen Miranda to the bronzed girl (or boy) from Ipanema moving sensually over the white sands of Rio's beaches. Among these tropical fantasies is that of the uninhibited and licentious Brazilian homosexual, who expresses uncontrolled sexuality during wild Carnival festivities and is welcomed by a society that accepts fluid sexual identity. However, in this cultural history of male homosexuality in Brazil, James Green shatters these exotic myths and replaces them with a complex picture of the social obstacles that confront Brazilian homosexuals. Ranging from the late-19th century to the rise of a politicized gay and lesbian rights movement in the 1970s, Green's study focuses on male homosexual subcultures in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. He uncovers the stories of men coping with arrests and street violence, dealing with family restrictions, and resisting both a hostile medical profession and moralizing influences of the Church. Green also describes how these men have created vibrant subcultures with alternative support networks for maintaining romantic and sexual relationships and for surviving in an intolerant social environment. He then goes on to trace how urban parks, plazas, cinemas and beaches are appropriated for same-sex erotic encounters, bringing us into the world of street cruising, male hustlers and cross-dressing prostitutes.

In 1964, Brazil’s democratically elected, left-wing government was ousted in a coup and replaced by a military junta. The Johnson administration quickly recognized the new government. The U.S. press and members of Congress were nearly unanimous in their support of the “revolution” and the coup leaders’ anticommunist agenda. Few Americans were aware of the human rights abuses perpetrated by Brazil’s new regime. By 1969, a small group of academics, clergy, Brazilian exiles, and political activists had begun to educate the American public about the violent repression in Brazil and mobilize opposition to the dictatorship. By 1974, most informed political activists in the United States associated the Brazilian government with its torture chambers. In We Cannot Remain Silent, James N. Green analyzes the U.S. grassroots activities against torture in Brazil, and the ways those efforts helped to create a new discourse about human-rights violations in Latin America. He explains how the campaign against Brazil’s dictatorship laid the groundwork for subsequent U.S. movements against human rights abuses in Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, and Central America.Green interviewed many of the activists who educated journalists, government officials, and the public about the abuses taking place under the Brazilian dictatorship. Drawing on those interviews and archival research from Brazil and the United States, he describes the creation of a network of activists with international connections, the documentation of systematic torture and repression, and the cultivation of Congressional allies and the press. Those efforts helped to expose the terror of the dictatorship and undermine U.S. support for the regime. Against the background of the political and social changes of the 1960s and 1970s, Green tells the story of a decentralized, international grassroots movement that effectively challenged U.S. foreign policy.

Herbert Daniel was a significant and complex figure in Brazilian leftist revolutionary politics and social activism from the mid-1960s until his death in 1992. As a medical student, he joined a revolutionary guerrilla organization but was forced to conceal his sexual identity from his comrades, a situation Daniel described as internal exile. After a government crackdown, he spent much of the 1970s in Europe, where his political self-education continued. He returned to Brazil in 1981, becoming engaged in electoral politics and social activism to champion gay rights, feminism, and environmental justice, achieving global recognition for fighting discrimination against those with HIV/AIDS. In Exile within Exiles, James N. Green paints a full and dynamic portrait of Daniel's deep commitment to leftist politics, using Daniel's personal and political experiences to investigate the opposition to Brazil's military dictatorship, the left's construction of a revolutionary masculinity, and the challenge that the transition to democracy posed to radical movements. Green positions Daniel as a vital bridge linking former revolutionaries to the new social movements, engendering productive dialogue between divergent perspectives in his writings and activism.

This practical guide explains how forensic psychologists can successfully use the MMPI-2 to evaluate clients in various forensic contexts and present results to attorneys and judges. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is one of the most widely researched and used assessment tools in psychology. Forensic psychologists often rely on it to evaluate clients involved in civil and criminal cases. Because the test results can have a significant influence on court decisions, psychologists need to understand how to make full use of the MMPI-2 in forensic settings. Building on his popular series of MMPI-2 books, James N. Butcher and his coauthors present this guide that is based on decades of research and personal experience. Following a brief overview of the MMPI-2 and its various scales, the authors further explore its applications in various forensic settings, including personal injury and workers amp rsquo compensation claims, immigration relief and deportation cases, and criminal investigations. Clear, practical guidelines bolstered by illustrative case examples will help psychologists: Understand legal and cultural factors that may influence the assessment process Evaluate neuropsychological issues, such as brain injury Employ computerized interpretations and Present results in testimony and written reports

In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, conflicting arguments have been made about fair value accounting (FVA) versus historical cost accounting (HCA) and the role that each played in the crisis. This report examines the relationship between both types of accounting practices and systemic risk in the financial sector, providing recommendations on how FVA and HCA can both be improved.

This second edition of “Polynomial representations of GL (K)” consists of n two parts. The ?rst part is a corrected version of the original text, formatted A in LT X, and retaining the original numbering of sections, equations, etc. E The second is an Appendix, which is largely independent of the ?rst part, but whichleadstoanalgebraL(n,r),de?nedbyP.Littelmann, whichisanalogous to the Schur algebra S(n,r). It is hoped that, in the future, there will be a structure theory of L(n,r) rather like that which underlies the construction of Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We use two operators which act on “words”. The ?rst of these is due to C. Schensted (1961). The second is due to Littelmann, and goes back to a1938paperbyG.deB.Robinsonontherepresentationsofa?nitesymmetric group.Littelmann’soperatorsformthebasisofhiselegantandpowerful“path model” of the representation theory of classical groups. In our Appendix we use Littelmann’s theory only in its simplest case, i.e. for GL . n Essential to my plan was to establish two basic facts connecting the op- ations of Schensted and Littelmann. To these “facts”, or rather conjectures, I gave the names Theorem A and Proposition B. Many examples suggested that these conjectures are true, and not particularly deep. But I could not prove either of them.

Magnum Opus: The Unbelievable 15-Year Saga of Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy
By 1993, Guns N' Roses had hit practically every benchmark possible for a rock n' roll band. Their eight-year journey included an explosive and game-changing debut record, a self-indulgent but even more successful double album release, a handful of raucous global tours, and various front page controversies over their lyrics, drug addictions, and lead singer Axl Rose's rattlesnake temper. The most captivating part of the Guns N' Roses story was just beginning, however. A 15-year saga was about to unfold over the creation of the group's sixth studio album, a perverse and jaw-dropping tale that would come to involve not only a small nation of diverse musical talent but also several figures from the world of professional sports, a multinational soda company, the estate of Martin Luther King, Jr, and the FBI. In the end, cultural critics couldn't agree if the resulting work was unprecedented genius or a crime of mediocrity.Magnum Opus: The Unbelievable 15 Year Saga of Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy recounts in engaging depth and detail the long and often ludicrous road to the last mythic rock n' roll album of the 20th Century. Of course, Chinese Democracy was not released until well into the 21st Century, and Magnum Opus assembles all the outrageous facts from as many direct sources as possible and places them in a thrilling narrative spanning our millennia. Rock n' roll die-hards can finally separate the truth about Chinese Democracy from the GNR lies.

"The Committee meets today to consider the nomination of General James Mattis to be the Secretary of Defense of the United States. Two years ago, the last time you came before this Committee, the idea that we would be meeting again under the present circumstances would have been hard to imagine-most of all by you. But I, for one, could not be happier. All of us recognize the unique, indeed historic, nature of this nomination. General Mattis enjoyed a long and distinguished career in uniform, but current law would bar him from serving as Secretary of Defense for three more years. While I support retaining that law, I also believe that our nation needs General Mattis's service more than ever. So after this hearing, the Committee will meet to consider special legislation to allow General Mattis to serve as Secretary of Defense. If confirmed, General Mattis would have the honor of leading a team of Americans who represent everything that is noble and best in our nation. Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines do everything we ask of them and more. They make us proud every day. Our many defense civil servants also sacrifice day in and day out for our national security, and rarely get the credit they deserve. I am confident that no one appreciates our people and values their sacrifices more than General Mattis."

For nearly 400 years, New England has held an important place in the development of American English, and "New England accents" are very well known in the popular imagination. While other projects have studied various dialect regions of New England, this is the first large-scale academic project since the 1930s to focus specifically on New England English as a whole. In New England English, James N. Stanford presents new variationist sociolinguistic research covering all six New England states, with detailed geographic, acoustic phonetic, and statistical analyses of recently collected data from over 1,600 New Englanders. Stanford and his team of Dartmouth students built this dataset over 8 years of face-to-face fieldwork and online audio recordings and questionnaires. Using acoustic phonetics, computational processing, and dialect maps, the book systematically documents major traditional New England dialect features and their current usage in terms of geography, age, gender, ethnicity, social class, and other factors. This dataset is interpreted in terms of William Labov's outward orientation of the language faculty, dialect levelling, convergence and divergence, and "Hub social geometry." The result is a wide-ranging empirical analysis and theoretical overview of this influential English dialect region.

This is the story of the more than one million Oklahomans, Arkansans, Texans, and Misourians who settled in California during the economically depressed 1930s and the war-boom 1940s. Not just a conventional account of hardship and economic recovery, this is a finely screened cultural exploration that brings to light the migrants' impact on California's political, religious, and recreational institutions.
