Critical Practice

Critical Practice

Janet Marstine

Critical Practice is an ambitious work that blurs the boundaries between art history, museum studies, political science and applied ethics. Marstine demonstrates how convergences between institutional critique and socially engaged practice, as represented by the term ‘critical practice’, can create conditions for organisational change, particularly facilitating increased public agency and shared authority. The book analyses a range of museum interventions exploring such subjects as the ethical stewardship of collections, hybridity as a methodological approach to social justice and alternative forms of democracy. Discussing critical practice within the framework of peace and reconciliation studies, Marstine shows how artists’ interventions can redress exclusions, inequalities and relational frictions between museums and their publics. Elucidating the museological and ethical implications of institutional critique and socially engaged practice, Marstine has provided a timely and thoughtful resource for museum studies scholars, artists, museum professionals, art historians and graduate students worldwide who are interested in mapping and unpacking the intricate relationships among artists, museums and communities.

Dispute System Design walks readers through the art of successfully designing a system for preventing, managing, and resolving conflicts and legally-framed disputes. Drawing on decades of expertise as instructors and consultants, the authors show how dispute systems design can be used within all types of organizations, including business firms, nonprofit organizations, and international and transnational bodies. This book has two parts: the first teaches readers the foundations of Dispute System Design (DSD), describing bedrock concepts, and case chapters exploring DSD across a range of experiences, including public and community justice, conflict within and beyond organizations, international and comparative systems, and multi-jurisdictional and complex systems. This book is intended for anyone who is interested in the theory or practice of DSD, who uses or wants to understand mediation, arbitration, court trial, or other dispute resolution processes, or who designs or improves existing processes and systems.

Every family has a story to tell, and most of what is told about Monterey history is Cannery Row, fishing, sardines and golf, but not much is ever said about the men who built the boats for the fishermen. This is my story - the master boat builders of Italy, my family, the Siino family.

The Chiapas Highlands comprise a remote and relatively unknown area of Mexico that possesses among the most interesting, varied, and masterful textile traditions in the world. Separated by extreme terrain and distinct climates, villages in this region have developed weaving techniques and styles of dress that have persisted for centuries. In this richly illustrated, bilingual book, readers will visit 20 villages, learn their history and folklore, get an insider's look at their festivals, traditions, and daily lives, and revel in their stunning handwoven cloth. Ritual transvestites, Virgin statues draped with native blouses, village officials wearing tunics designed to look like howler monkey fur, men and women alike in elaborately floral shawls and ponchos–these are just a few of the unforgettable images captured in this book.

This monograph lays out a discussion framework for understanding the role of human-computer interaction (HCI) in public policymaking. It takes an international view, discussing potential areas for research and application and their potential for impact. The aim is to provide a solid foundation for discussion, cooperation and collaborative interaction, and to outline future programs of activity. It starts with an introduction to HCI and public policy and goes on to discuss how HCI research and practices already inform public policy, providing representative examples. It then discusses how public policy influences HCI and provides representative public policy areas that are relevant to HCI, and where HCI could have even more impact in the future. It concludes by laying out a framework for involvement and suggested actions by the HCI community in public policy internationally. This monograph summarizes the observations and recommendations from a daylong workshop at the CHI 2013 conference in Paris, France. The workshop invited the community’s perspectives regarding the intersection of governmental policies, international and domestic standards, recent HCI research discoveries, and emergent considerations and challenges. It also incorporates contributions made after the workshop by workshop participants and by individuals who were unable to participate in the workshop but whose work and interests were highly related and relevant.

What does it mean to grow by letting go? A path to personal growth is never wandered without trials. Some build us more than others. The ups and downs of finding independence, self-love, and awareness through anger, grief, surrender and the flow only these three things can manifest are explored in an unconcealed fashion. In What She Knows by Juanet Martinez, silence is broken surrounding loving someone with addiction and what it means to be on a journey of recovery from codependency, instability, and being fear-minded, to thriving in one's truth, finding grace in the hard moments, gratitude in the good, and breaking free of a cage we never mean to craft.

If she fails to do this, then Darcy must leave Meryton and forget her forever. Darcy agrees, confident of his success.Tentatively, he begins to woo his beloved. Then, just as things seem to be progressing nicely, Caroline Bingley, George Wickham and Elizabeth's own sister, Lydia, throw everything into jeopardy. Live your truth. Be proud. Stand up for who you are and what you believe in. This unique graphic novel is a tribute to the lives and accompaniments of those who are proud to stand up for those who aren't afraid to live authentically. Superstar artist George Amaru provides a stunning one of three covers that link together to showcase the Pride Flag. Ellen DeGeneres' journey to get where she is now was not always a smooth one. She's felt the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. But through it all, she managed to stay true to herself and prove that she is a female force to be reckoned with. Best known for her work with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, including their hit cover "I Love Rock N' Roll," Joan Jett's wild ride from a member of The Runaways to her solo career catapulted her into stardom. Kristen Stewart's non-conformist style and choices of unique film roles mark her as a maverick in the industry. Kristen has become a household name through the "Twilight" Saga, but box office numbers do not define her success. An actress, vocal artist, singer, author, comedian, and talk show host, Jane Lynch, is in the public eye every time you turn on the television. Her journey to success is inspiring. Rosie O'Donnell is one of the most outspoken LGBTQ allies as well as living her authentic life as an out and proud member of the lesbian community. This 96-page graphic novel will make you feel more pride. This series has been featured in the Advocate, Time and People Magazines.
