Best known for his portraits of celebrities, musicians, and artists, photographer Mark Seliger has lived adjacent to Christopher Street for nearly 20 years. His initial curiosity was to shoot a handful of portraits-documentary style-in hopes of capturing the colour, flamboyant characters, and theatre of a famous but vanishing neighbourhood. What he discovered was an Ellis Island of gender identity, a nightly carnival of personalities that open up a visual discourse about sexuality and the constant ebb and flow of the transgender world we all inhabit today. Each person brings a different personality and a sense of style and fashion, and Seliger captures that spirit in every photograph. The 70 portraits were taken with Seliger's Hasselblad camera, which produce a highly detailed, rich texture. All the photographs were made especially for this book and are published here for the first time. Mark Seliger was the chief photographer for Rolling Stone for more than ten years. He contributes to Vanity Fair, GQ, Time, and more. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.
Street-Level Leadership

Street-Level Leadership

Janet V. Denhardt; Austin Lane Crothers

Georgetown University Press
1998
pokkari
Examining public service from the perspective of the worker, this book provides a new framework for understanding the roles and responsibilities of front-line public servants and assessing the appropriateness of their actions. Public employees who work at street level face some of the most intractable, pervasive, and complex problems in contemporary society. Drawing on more than 1500 hours of observation of police officers and social service workers in four states, this book explores the types of situations they confront, the factors they consider, and the hard choices they make. Presenting numerous cases of how these individuals acted in various situations, the authors show how public servants translate the expectations of administrators and others into legitimate street-level action. Vinzant and Crothers propose the concept of leadership as a positive and realistic framework for understanding what these public servants do and how they can successfully meet the daily challenges of their very difficult and complex jobs. They show how changing the theory and language we use to describe street-level work can encourage decisions that are responsive both to the needs of the clients being served and to the broader community's need for accountability. They also examine how street-level leadership can change the way agencies recruit, train, and manage these employees and how society defines their role in governance. This book offers valuable insights for those working in or studying public administration, policy analysis, criminal justice, and social work.

Transformation from Wall Street to Well-being: Joining up the dots through Participatory democracy and governance to mitigate the causes and adapt to the effects of climate change addresses accountable leadership, supports collective interests, ethical governance and fairness to future generations in order to develop systemic approaches relevant to these issues. The humanistic focus, whilst central, addresses how we see ourselves in relation to the environment. It explores cultural perspectives in developed and developing parts of the world where people have a closer connection with the natural environment in comparison to those who live in cities. Furthermore the book discusses participatory action research to prefigure a means to hold the market to ensure that the use of resources that are necessary for the common good are accessible and equitable. The essential systemic aim this book offers is to balance human needs with nature. The research summarizes the discourses and the adaptive praxis in order to develop a bridge between cosmopolitan ethics and cosmopolitan governance. It does this in the interest of supporting and using cultural designs for living that support quality of life and spans five core domains as explained by the author. Overall, this monograph helps evaluates the extent to which the introduced approaches enable the community to consider their perceived assets and risks and the implications of their consumption choices.

Benjamin Graham on Value Investing: Lessons from the Dean of Wall Street
"No intelligent investor should fail to read and understand the works of Benjamin Graham. This fine book provides a bird's-eye view of his investment perspectives; it is also a compelling biography of his remarkable life."--John Bogle, chairman and founder, Vanguard Group An accesssible guide to the philosphy and ideas of "the father of value investing", Benjamin Grahm. The late Benjamin Graham built a fortune following his own advice: Invest in low-priced, solidly run companies with good dividends. Diversify with a wide variety of stocks and bonds. Defend your shareholders' rights. Be patient and think for yourself. In an era when manipulators controlled the market, Graham taught himself and others the value of reliable information about a company's past and present performance. Times and the market have changed but his advice still holds true for today's investors. In Benjamin Graham on Value Investing, Janet Lowe provides an incisive introduction to Graham's investment ideas, as well as captivating portrait of the man himself. All types of investors will learn the insights of a financial genius, almost as though Graham himself were alive and preaching his gospel.
