Ashley Jacobs relishes in providing her customers with a soothing and healing environment at her day spa in the exclusive Silverado Hills area of Napa Valley. She maintains her even temper and peace of mind by avoiding anger at all costs. But when she faces a vicious lawsuit, from someone she least suspects, her peace of mind comes to a complete halt. Justin Underwood is a modern day knight in shining armor, who fights for the disenfranchised in court. One thing he can't stand is an argumentative woman. The moment he hears Ashley's soothing voice and feels her gentle touch, he finds comfort simply by being in her presence. He must have the woman with the sexy bedroom eyes. But Ashley has a family secret that prevents her from totally committing to Justin. After taking Ashley's case, he watches her turn a blind eye to those behind her lawsuit. Can Justin get Ashley to commit to him, and open her eyes to the facts of her lawsuit? Can Ashley overcome her family's secret that prevents her from committing to Justin?
Silence and Narrative

Silence and Narrative

Janice L. Doane

Praeger Publishers Inc
1986
sidottu
Making use of recent feminist critical theory, Doane considers Gertrude Stein's modernist preoccupation with narrative silence in her early novels. She demonstrates the effects of this preoccupation on Stein's literary development, from the conventionality of her first novel, Q.E.D., through Fernhurst and Three Lives, to the radical transgressions against narrative intelligibility in The Making Of Americans. Doane, contending that Stein's ultimate revolt against traditional modes of discourse is directly attributable to her position as a woman writer, effectively elaborates the possibilities of creating an alternative feminist discourse and explores the ways in which gender may contribute to meaning.

For Girls Only

For Girls Only

Janice L. Streitmatter

State University of New York Press
1999
pokkari
For Girls Only examines research and public policy regarding single-sex schooling, especially girls-only classes in public, coeducational schools. Since the passage of Title IX in 1972, which calls for equal access and participation regardless of gender, educators have attempted to address gender equity issues in schools. Current research on the progress of female students in U.S. public schools suggests that efforts have not sufficiently addressed concerns such as academic under-achievement in the areas of math and science, lower self-esteem from the advent of early adolescence, and vulnerability to sexual harassment. Despite Title IX, some educators have turned to the creation of single-sex classes and programs for female students in order to better address these critical issues. This book examines the longitudinal results of one study, reviews other research, and considers policy implications in conflict with Title IX.
Moving Lessons

Moving Lessons is an insightful and sophisticated look at the origins and influence of dance in American universities, focusing on Margaret H'Doubler (1889–1982), who established the first university courses and the first degree program in dance. Janice Ross shows how H'Doubler changed the way Americans thought, not just about female physicality but also about higher education for women. In this second edition, Ross adds new details on H'Doubler's radical pedagogy—including her use of a skeleton as a teaching tool in the classroom—and reflections on recent developments in dance studies and education.

Manchuria has been home to the Martens and Giesinger families ever since they escaped Soviet Russia in 1930. At fifteen years of age, Danny Martens and Rachel Giesinger are content with their lives, and with each other. But the end of World War II changes everything. In 1945, the Soviets invade northern China, infiltrating the temporary vacuum of power, and repatriate all men who were older than twenty years when they fled the Soviet Union.Robbed of home, livelihood and security, Danny's family and friends move southward, trying unsuccessfully to acquire emigration papers.Amid the difficulties, a ghost from the past stalks the Martens family in search of vengeance for previously hidden crimes. Danny struggles to honor his father's wish to move his family out of the country, but all his plans are thwarted. In desperation, Danny's mother requests sponsorship from friends, Phillip Wieler and Jasch Fast, who emigrated to the States in 1932. In spite of their own struggles with personal and economic tragedy, the Wielers and the Fasts attempt to help their friends who are held captive In a Foreign Land. This story is based loosely on memoirs of a survivor. It is the second book in the In Search of Freedom series. The first book is titled: Other Side of the River.

Major changes are occurring in the United States population and the nation's health care institutions and delivery systems. Significant disparities in health status exist across population groups. But the health care enterprise, with all its integrated and disparate parts, has been slow to respond. Written by three nationally known scholars and experts, Diversity and Cultural Competence in Health Care: A Systems Approach is designed to provide health care students and professionals with a clear understanding of foundations, philosophies, and processes that strengthen diversity management, inclusion, and culturally competent care delivery. Focusing on current practice and health care policy, including the recently passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), this textbook integrates strategic diversity management, self-reflective leadership, and the personal change process with culturally and linguistically appropriate care into a cohesive systems-oriented approach for health care professionals. The essentials of cultural competence and diversity management covered in this text will be helpful to a wide variety of students because they encompass principles and practices that can be realistically incorporated into the ongoing work of any health care field or organization. Each chapter contains learning objectives, summary, key terms, and review questions and activities designed to allow students to understand and explore concepts and practices identified throughout the text.

MATHEMATICAL MACROEVOLUTION IN DIATOM RESEARCH Buy this book to learn how to use mathematics in macroevolution research and apply mathematics to study complex biological problems. This book contains recent research in mathematical and analytical studies on diatoms. These studies reflect the complex and intricate nature of the problems being analyzed and the need to use mathematics as an aid in finding solutions. Diatoms are important components of marine food webs, the silica and carbon cycles, primary productivity, and carbon sequestration. Their uniqueness as glass-encased unicells and their presence throughout geologic history exemplifies the need to better understand such organisms. Explicating the role of diatoms in the biological world is no more urgent than their role as environmental and climate indicators, and as such, is aided by the mathematical studies in this book. The volume contains twelve original research papers as chapters. Macroevolutionary science topics covered are morphological analysis, morphospace analysis, adaptation, food web dynamics, origination-extinction and diversity, biogeography, life cycle dynamics, complexity, symmetry, and evolvability. Mathematics used in the chapters include stochastic and delay differential and partial differential equations, differential geometry, probability theory, ergodic theory, group theory, knot theory, statistical distributions, chaos theory, and combinatorics. Applied sciences used in the chapters include networks, machine learning, robotics, computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, and dynamical systems. The volume covers a diverse range of mathematical treatments of topics in diatom research. Audience Diatom researchers, mathematical biologists, evolutionary and macroevolutionary biologists, paleontologists, paleobiologists, theoretical biologists, as well as researchers in applied mathematics, algorithm sciences, complex systems science, computational sciences, informatics, computer vision and image processing sciences, nanoscience, the biofuels industry, and applied engineering.
Leading Psychoeducational Groups for Children and Adolescents

Leading Psychoeducational Groups for Children and Adolescents

Janice L. DeLucia-Waack

SAGE Publications Inc
2006

This book provides readers with direction on how to organize psychoeducational groups while also helping them enhance skills for effectively leading such groups—all in one comprehensive volume! Offering an applied, pragmatic approach, author Janice L. DeLucia-Waack uniquely integrates research and practice to suggest valuable leadership strategies while addressing special issues such as children of divorce, anger management, bullying behaviors, and much more. Key Features: Uses the model of Planning, Performing, and Processing: Based on the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW) Best Practice Guidelines, this book provides an outline for each step from planning a group to designing sessions to implementing them and also evaluating their effectiveness. The book also includes ASGW Professional Standards for Training of Group Workers and ASGW Principles for Diversity-Competent Group Workers. Focuses on the therapeutic relationship and interventions specific to children and teens: Groups for children and adolescents must be designed and implemented differently than groups for adults. What little has been written specifically about psychoeducational groups does not make distinctions based on the age of group members. This is the first book to suggest specific interventions that generate interest and participation on the part of children and adolescents. Provides guidance for the entire spectrum of activities related to leading groups: This book offers practical suggestions for how to effectively use activities in group meetings and chronicles common mistakes to avoid. A variety of learning tools such as suggested activities, sample outlines of group sessions, tables with references for related materials, and much more facilitate student comprehension. Intended Audience: This is an excellent text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying Counseling and Therapy of Children and Adolescents, Social Group Work, and Group Counseling for Education in departments of psychology, social work, and education. It is also a valuable resource for social work practitioners, counselors, and psychologists.
