Growing and Marketing Ginseng, Goldenseal and other Woodland Medicinals

Not all saleable crops are dependent on access to greenhouses or sun-drenched, arable land. Shade-loving medicinal herbs can be successfully cultivated in a forest garden for personal use or as small-scale cash crops. Growing and Marketing Ginseng, Goldenseal and other Woodland Medicinals is a complete guide to these increasingly popular botanicals, aimed at aspiring and experienced growers alike. In this fully revised and updated edition, authors Jeanine Davis and W. Scott Persons show how more than a dozen sought-after native species can generate a greater profit on a rugged, otherwise idle woodlot than just about any other legal crop on an equal area of cleared land. With little capital investment but plenty of sweat equity, patience, and common sense, small landowners can preserve and enhance their treed space while simultaneously earning supplemental income. Learn how to establish, grow, harvest, and market: * Popular medicinal roots such as ginseng, goldenseal, and black cohosh; * Other commonly used botanicals including bloodroot, false unicorn, and mayapple * The nutritious wild food, ramps, and the valuable ornamental galax. Packed with budget information, extensive references, and personal stories of successful growers, this invaluable resource will excite and inspire everyone from the home gardener to the full-time farmer. Jeanine Davis is an associate professor and extension specialist with North Carolina State University. Her focus is helping farmers diversify into new crops and organic agriculture. W. Scott Persons is the author of American Ginseng: Green Gold and an expert in growing and marketing wild-simulated and woods-cultivated ginseng.

Alayna was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome to a runaway 16-year-old girl who dumped the baby on the steps of a foster agency. Although the doctors predicted she would suffer from academic and behavior disorders, Alayna proves to be a highly advanced student. Her behavior and lack of a loving family, however, contribute to a string of poor decisions and delinquency. At age 16, she first steals an iPod and then a valuable piece of jewelry. As a result, she is sentenced to community service in an Alzheimer's ward 20 hours per week. She is also moved to her 12th foster-care setting, meeting the two people who desperately want to help her change her life forever. Alayna moves from anger and frustration in life to developing a very special relationship with an elderly Alzheimer's patient, Miss Lottie. Along with the consistent support of her foster parents and her friendship with Miss Lottie, Alayna learns about life, God, and what it means to have faith in the face of adversity. She even finds time to nurture a budding romance with a unique boy who has made a vow of purity, and she tries to hold onto a friendship with a girl who is the definition of "extra grace required."

When he asked her to prom, her heart fluttered in disbelief. When he picked her up that night, the way he stared her gave her butterflies. She felt like a princess in the strapless, turquoise gown as it cascaded effortlessly down her slim figure. They danced as if they were one; she felt perfectly at peace in his arms and melted as he gently kissed her cheek. The most handsome guy in school asked her to prom. Life was amazing and perfect, she thought. When they stopped at his house on the way to the after-party, she believed it was just for a quick visit to meet his parents. But his parents weren't home; they were out of town. When he pushed her onto the couch and held her down, she realized it had all been a dream turned instantly into a nightmare. From that moment, her life became riddled with the same horror day and night. A month later, the horror collided with turmoil. It wasn't until seven months later, having left home in shame, she moved to Plant City, Florida and began working at The Whistle Stop. The thought of a peaceful life filled with loving family and friends slowly became a possibility again, but it would be several years - with the support of her new family - before she truly allowed herself to be fully embraced in Shekinah.

This monograph lays out a discussion framework for understanding the role of human-computer interaction (HCI) in public policymaking. It takes an international view, discussing potential areas for research and application and their potential for impact. The aim is to provide a solid foundation for discussion, cooperation and collaborative interaction, and to outline future programs of activity. It starts with an introduction to HCI and public policy and goes on to discuss how HCI research and practices already inform public policy, providing representative examples. It then discusses how public policy influences HCI and provides representative public policy areas that are relevant to HCI, and where HCI could have even more impact in the future. It concludes by laying out a framework for involvement and suggested actions by the HCI community in public policy internationally. This monograph summarizes the observations and recommendations from a daylong workshop at the CHI 2013 conference in Paris, France. The workshop invited the community’s perspectives regarding the intersection of governmental policies, international and domestic standards, recent HCI research discoveries, and emergent considerations and challenges. It also incorporates contributions made after the workshop by workshop participants and by individuals who were unable to participate in the workshop but whose work and interests were highly related and relevant.
