From 1940 to 1989, nearly every hotel on the Las Vegas Strip employed a full-time band or orchestra. After the late 1980s, when control of the casinos changed hands from independent owners to corporations, almost all of these musicians found themselves unemployed. Played Out on the Strip traces this major shift in the music industry through extensive interviews with former musicians. In 1989, these soon-to-be unemployed musicians went on strike. Janis McKay charts the factors behind this strike, which was precipitated by several corporate hotel owners moving to replace live musicians with synthesizers and taped music, a strategic decision made in order to save money. The results of this transitional period in Las Vegas history were both long-lasting and far-reaching for the entertainment industry. With its numerous oral history interviews and personal perspectives from the era, this book will appeal to readers interested in Las Vegas history, music history, and labor issues.
We are living in an era in which hate has become a national value. Hatred against the other is now an endemic and unforgiving aspect of our culture. "Law, Media, and Culture" examines how the law defines and reacts to hate, how the media reinforces it, and how hate is manifested in popular culture. This book also takes a fresh look at how the Internet has become a major tool to communicate hate, and how the development of attitudes toward hate are shaped by gender.

French-Speaking Women Documentarians is a guide for teachers of French and others interested in selecting and researching the work of female French-speaking documentarians. Represented in this book are filmmakers from Canada, various African nations, the Antilles, Lebanon, Switzerland, Belgium, and several other countries, with emphasis on Agnes Varda of France - arguably the greatest female documentarian of all. The book includes information on each filmmaker, classified by country of origin, and lists and describes her works, giving factual information such as date, duration, credits, and synopses, and pointing out critical treatments, both in English and in French, of her most important films. Shorts, docudramas, and works of animation are also discussed, as they, too, reflect history and culture. This guide will lead to the viewing of films that shed understanding on the culture being portrayed and to a greater appreciation of the contribution of French-speaking wom! en filmmakers to this important, if not always objective, film genre.
Without judgment or finger-pointing, this book offers a fresh, positive, commonsense, and biblical look at the Ten Commandments. Janis L. Talsma, a longtine student of the Bible, answers questions such as: - What happens if we ignore these Ten Commandments, make our own rules, or pick and choose those that suit us and discard the rest? - What happens when we do not feel responsible for our behavior because we have decided that we are entitled to do whatever we feel is okay?- What happens when our behavior brings harm to others? Each commandment is addressed one by one. At the heart of each one is a blessing that is ours if we strive, with God's help, to live according to them. These commandments are meant to be a roadmap for living, so that individually and as a society we can work toward the good of all. In so doing, we honor each other and God Himself, who so wisely knew of our need for them. Join the author as she celebrates the goodness of the Ten Commandments and reveals how to harness them to honor God and show love for all of humanity. Each commandment is addressed one by one. At the heart of each one is a positive good and blessing that is ours if we strive, with God's help, to live according to them. They are meant to be a road-map for living so that individually and as a society we impact each other's lives for the good of all. And in so doing, we honor each other and God Himself who so wisely knew of our need for them. It's a positive way of expressing our love for God and for each other.

Noteworthy Francophone Women Directors: A Sequel is a comprehensive guide that foregrounds the productions of nearly three hundred Francophone women filmmakers from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Latin American, Québec, and even Thailand. The book begins following films released after the publication of Pallister and Hottell's last volume, Francophone Women Film Directors, in 2005 and stops after the Cannes film festival in 2010.
Irving Janis, one of the world's leading authorities on decision making, presents a comprehensive analysis that shows corporate executives, government and organizational policymakers, and general managers how to avoid making critical errors and ensure quality in making vital decisions. Using cogent evidence and illustrations from studies of top-level policymakers in government, business, and public welfare organizations, Janis shows how the likelihood of failure is substantially reduced if sound procedures of information search, appraisal, and planning are used. He alerts executives to the preconditions, precipitating events, and catalysts that create situations where the most dangerous error of decision making--relying on simplistic decision rules--often occurs. By following the four essential steps outlined by Janis, policymakers can adopt "vigilant problem solving," the high-quality procedural strategy for arriving at policy decisions When policymakers utilize the vigilant problem solving approach, they are likely to take full account of the various constraints involved in a situation and may even seek out additional information about them. Consequently, the risk of failure, especially in critical situations, is substantially lowered. Janis' highly acclaimed decision making strategies give a powerful advantage to managers in all kinds of organizations, from the smallest family business to the largest corporation and government agency.

This is the second installment of the unique and extraordinary adventures of long-time insider and survivor, Janis Gillham Grady. For years, she worked as a personal assistant known as a "Commodore's Messenger" for Scientology's elusive founder, L. Ron Hubbard, who was recognized aboard his ships as "the Commodore." No books about Scientology compare to the scope of Janis' or for the meticulous detail, accuracy and depth of insight that she reveals from the epicenter of the Scientology movement. Janis was born in Australia to Scientology "royalty," the youngest child of Peter F. Gillham, the founder of internationally noted brand Natural Vitality and nutritional products such as Natural Calm and Calmag, and Yvonne Gillham-Jentzsch, founder of the Church of Scientology's Celebrity Centre. Janis' stepfather is Heber Jentzsch, known for many years as the President of the Church of Scientology International, and its primary spokesman. This book picks up where Book One ended with Janis, at age 14, along with her older brother Peter and sister Terri, all members of Scientology's inner core, the Sea Organization. Aboard the Scientology ship Apollo, Janis worked as one of the fi rst four personal messengers of Scientology leader, L. Ron Hubbard. She had a front-row seat as the ship sailed between Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, and she was privy to Hubbard's att empts to ingratiate Scientology with the Moroccan government as it faced att empted coups and brutal crackdowns. As more and more ports denied entry to the Apollo, Hubbard crossed the Atlantic to the somewhat friendlier waters of the Caribbean, though still harassed by numerous agencies including the U.S. State Department, FBI, Interpol among others. This harrowing journey takes you from October 1970 until October 1975, when L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology headquarters moved from his personal yacht to land in the United States. Commodore's Messenger: Riding Out the Storms is the second volume of the trilogy that chronicles Janis Grady's epic journey and that of Scientology's mysterious Sea Organization.

Since the Great Recession of 2008, the racial wealth gap between black and white Americans has continued to widen. In Predatory Lending and the Destruction of the African-American Dream, Janis Sarra and Cheryl Wade detail the reasons for this failure by analyzing the economic exploitation of African Americans, with a focus on predatory practices in the home mortgage context. They also examine the failure of reform and litigation efforts ostensibly aimed at addressing this form of racial discrimination. This research, augmented by first-hand narratives, provides invaluable insight into the racial wealth gap by vividly illustrating the predation that targets African-American consumers and examining the intentionally obfuscating settlement terms of cases brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, States Attorneys, and municipalities. The authors conclude by offering structural, systemic changes to address predatory practices. This important work should be read by anyone seeking to understand racial inequality in the United States.

Permutation Statistical Methods with R

This book takes a unique approach to explaining permutation statistics by integrating permutation statistical methods with a wide range of classical statistical methods and associated R programs. It opens by comparing and contrasting two models of statistical inference: the classical population model espoused by J. Neyman and E.S. Pearson and the permutation model first introduced by R.A. Fisher and E.J.G. Pitman. Numerous comparisons of permutation and classical statistical methods are presented, supplemented with a variety of R scripts for ease of computation. The text follows the general outline of an introductory textbook in statistics with chapters on central tendency and variability, one-sample tests, two-sample tests, matched-pairs tests, completely-randomized analysis of variance, randomized-blocks analysis of variance, simple linear regression and correlation, and the analysis of goodness of fit and contingency. Unlike classical statistical methods, permutation statistical methods do not rely on theoretical distributions, avoid the usual assumptions of normality and homogeneity, depend only on the observed data, and do not require random sampling. The methods are relatively new in that it took modern computing power to make them available to those working in mainstream research. Designed for an audience with a limited statistical background, the book can easily serve as a textbook for undergraduate or graduate courses in statistics, psychology, economics, political science or biology. No statistical training beyond a first course in statistics is required, but some knowledge of, or some interest in, the R programming language is assumed.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of women become victims of sexual violence in conflict zones around the world; in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, approximately 1,100 rapes are reported each month. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the causes, consequences and responses to sexual violence in contemporary armed conflict. It explores the function and effect of wartime sexual violence and examines the conditions that make women and girls most vulnerable to these acts both before, during and after conflict. To understand the motivations of the men (and occasionally women) who perpetrate this violence, the book analyzes the role played by systemic and situational factors such as patriarchy and militarized masculinity. Difficult questions of accountability are tackled; in particular, the case of child soldiers, who often suffer a double victimization when forced to commit sexual atrocities. The book concludes by looking at strategies of prevention and protection as well as new programs being set up on the ground to support the rehabilitation of survivors and their communities. Sexual violence in war has long been a taboo subject but, as this book shows, new and courageous steps are at last being taken Ð at both local and international level - to end what has been called the “greatest silence in history”.
