For most of her life, Jay W. MacIntosh (born Janet Tallulah Jewell) has loved flowers. It started when she was little. When her mother planted vegetables, she planted flowers. When her mother harvested carrots or lettuce or squash, she picked flowers. As she grew older, she knew most of the homes with fresh flowers in their yards. She knew hedges with flowers and yards with jonquils and tulips and narcissus. Her love affair with flowers continued. In later life, she became interested in photography and began taking pictures of roses. This book is a collection of her favorites with selected quotations. "It is wonderful when someone can turn their passion into a book and shares that passion other people. Jay W MacIntosh has done this with her book "Moments in Time." What started from her routine daily walks and her own love of flowers and beauty has now become a book that can be shared with all. I find it very uplifting to be able to look through this book and view the pictures of the colorful flowers. Jay W MacIntosh has capture the essence of beautiful flowers. I particularly enjoy the pictures of the flowers that are moist. It looks like the flowers have just been watered. I bought this book for my mom as a mother's day gift. My mother really loved it. It is a great gift for those special occasions and for anyone who enjoys nature and beauty. It also is a wonderful decoration on a coffee table." - Randi S. Klein.

When her mother harvested carrots or lettuce or squash, she picked flowers. As she grew older, she knew most of the homes with fresh flowers in their yards. She knew hedges with flowers and yards with jonquils and tulips and narcissus. Her love affair with flowers continued. While she was practicing law in Los Angeles, California, she became interested in photography as a hobby and began taking pictures of roses. This book is a collection of her favorites with selected quotations. One reader describes this book as such: "Whenever I see a photo of a rose posted, I repost as a reminder that there is beauty around us. Jay MacIntosh's book 'Capturing Beauty'] was given to me as a birthday gift, and I just adore it. I look through it over and over again - not only for the beauty of the photography, but also for the wonderful quotes Ms. MacIntosh puts next to each rose. So, along with her eye for capturing a moment in time on Mother Nature's watch, we read what Einstein has to say or the Buddha and such. Instead of thinking of so much ugliness on the news or postings, these flowers refresh the soul. The quotes make one contemplate better ways of living and doing things. I cherish this book and feel that looking through it over and over again is better than a glass of wine and far healthier I highly suggest purchasing this book of wonder; You'll never be sorry." - Adria Schumann, Los Angeles, California. MacIntosh's published works include "Capturing Beauty", "The Origins of George Bernard Shaw's Life Force Philosophy", "Janet Tallulah", "Journal of Janet Tallulah, Volume I", "Journal of Janet Tallulah, Volume 2", "Jayspeak on the Cote d'Azur", and "Moments in Time".

Janet Tallulah Jewell is born in a small town in Georgia in the 1930's. She is the third daughter of young man - Jesse Dickson Jewell - who owns a chicken hatchery with his mother in Gainesville. Janet's mother - Anna Lou - is a housewife. She raises Janet to be a housewife. Prim, proper, obedient. Play nice, be fair, go to church, learn to sew and cook. Janet has other plans. Lead, shine, star, confront, enjoy, explore. By the time Janet is 31, she leaves Georgia and move to Los Angeles, California - coaxing her husband, Darrell, and three children to go with her. This Journal begins after Janet had been in LA for a year. Depressed, discouraged, na ve, and disillusioned, Janet attends a retreat focusing on depth psychology. Conducted by Jungian psychologist Ira Progoff, Janet immerses herself in a journalistic approach to humanistic psychology and begins writing in a Journal. This book covers her journey during those early years in LA - the time when she struggles to learn how to juggle being a wife, mother, and actress - all at the same time. One reader says, "This book was a great read. It tells the story of a small-town girl's life striving to become an actress while still raising her children and being a wife. Jay doesn't keep anything inside as she tells her story, so you get a real picture of what she endured. I really enjoyed reading this book. Being able to step inside the life and mindset of another person without leaving the comfort of my cozy couch." Jay W.

American Actress and Attorney JAY W. MACINTOSH moved to Nice, France from Los Angeles in 2015. In this book, she creates and writes about her new life in France in a way that captures and keeps your attention throughout. Her style is casual and comfortable, as if she is in the room with you, enjoying a cup of espresso or a delicious glass of French wine. A delightful read for those who love to live life in new ways, vicariously or otherwise. She takes you along for the ride. One reader says: I enjoyed this book immensely. Full Disclosure: Although I didn't know the author Jay W. MacIntosh] as an adult, she and my brother were classmates and close friends in grammar school in Gainesville, GA. I connected with her on Gainesville social media recently. When I learned of her book, knowing her impressive educational background, as well has her various professions of university teacher, actress, real estate agent, and attorney, I knew that it would be compelling. The author Ms. MacIntosh] has drawn on a series of blogs she wrote while living in Nice, France beginning in 2015. She describes the decision to pull up roots in Los Angeles and move to Nice with her husband, Steve Orlandella, and his tragic death of pneumonia only months after starting their new life. She shares the shock, the sadness, the financial distress, and her path back from grief, and decision to remain in Nice alone. As one who had a career as a foreign language training specialist, I read her account of her efforts to learn French in a country where it is spoken and applaud her creativity in combining formal training with organized conversation exchanges. Her determination comes through in a very positive way. The book could be called a diary, with accounts of daily life along with a look back at her past life, her opinions, and her philosophy. She has included a wide array of photos, mostly in Nice and taken by herself. The flowers are striking but are in black and white. Having published a book myself through an Amazon subsidiary, I am keenly aware of how prohibitively expensive it is to publish in color. If you like diaries and enjoy reading about an incredible woman with the professional experience of four or five persons, and the humanity and positive attitude to succeed and be happy, you will enjoy this book. - John R, foreign language train specialist. Jay W. MacIntosh's published works include "Capturing Beauty," "The Origins of George Bernard Shaw's Life Force Philosophy," "Janet Tallulah," "Journal of Janet Tallulah, Volume I," "Journal of Janet Tallulah, Volume 2," "Jayspeak on the Cote d'Azur," and "Moments in Time."

Eat, Fast, Feast: Heal Your Body While Feeding Your Soul—A Christian Guide to Fasting
The New York Times bestselling author and senior fellow at the Discovery Institute blends science and religion in this thoughtful guide that teaches modern believers how to use the leading wellness trend today--intermittent fasting--as a means of spiritual awakening, adopting the traditions our Christians ancestors practiced for centuries into daily life.Wellness minded people today are increasingly turning to intermittent fasting to bolster their health. But we aren't the first people to abstain from eating for a purpose. This routine was a common part of our spiritual ancestors' lives for 1,500 years. Jay Richards argues that Christians should recover the fasting lifestyle, not only to improve our bodies, but to bolster our spiritual health as well. In Eat, Fast, Feast, he combines forgotten spiritual wisdom on fasting and feasting with the burgeoning literature on ketogenic diets and fasting for improved physical and mental health. Based on his popular series "Fasting, Body and Soul" in The Stream, Eat, Fast, Feast explores what it means to substitute our hunger for God for our hunger for food, and what both modern science and the ancient monastics can teach us about this practice.Richards argues that our modern diet--heavy in sugar and refined carbohydrates--locks us into a metabolic trap that makes fasting unfruitful and our feasts devoid of meaning. The good news, he reveals, is that we are beginning to resist the tyranny of processed foods, with millions of people pursuing low carb, ketogenic, paleo, and primal diets. This growing body of experts argue that eating natural fat and fasting is not only safe, but far better than how we eat today. Richards provides a 40-day plan which combines a long-term "nutritional ketosis" with spiritual disciplines. The plan can be used any time of the year or be adapted to a penitential season on the Christian calendar, such as Advent or Lent. Synthesizing recent science with ancient wisdom, Eat, Fast, Feast brings together the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of intermittent fasting to help Christians improve their lives and their health, and bring them closer to God.
Theories of Child Abuse and Neglect

Theories of Child Abuse and Neglect

This volume was prepared under the impetus of desperate need in academic institutions and clinical and social services for a comprehensive introduction to the diverse theories about child abuse and neglect etiologies. Although history documents maltreatment of children since the beginning of human civilization, formal recognition of the problem has been relatively recent. During the past three decades, professionals in various fields, especially medicine, psychiatry, social work, law, sociology, and psychology, have been involved in the identification, treatment, and prevention of child victimization and its detrimental consequences. In studying the etiology of child maltreatment, many theoretical viewpoints have been proposed in the literature and used for clinical practice as well as academic research. The current work represents a comprehensive evaluation and integration of diverse theorizations concerning the abuse and neglect of children. The authors have compiled more than 40 theories, models, and perspectives from the literature. As the subtitle suggests, they describe individual theories, summarize across different theoretical views, and evaluate the current status of those theorizations. This volume is intended for three distinct audiences: practitioners, researchers, and the general public. Clinical practitioners will find it a source of strategies that can be applied in clinical settings. By documenting the absence of comprehensive, multidiscipinary-oriented theory development, it will encourage researchers toward refining existing theories through integration with other theoretical perspectives. For the general public, it provides insight into a troubling social problem.

As most managers know, you need a vision to motivate employees to achieve goals. But people, and companies, lose focus, and the future appears hazy. People say, We're getting stale, or, I just don't know where we're headed. Leaders know they need a vision to bring people together. And they know a good vision will renew enthusiasm and commitment. But waiting for inspiration rarely works—sometimes you need a vision now. But how? Recharge Your Team not only shows managers how to create an effective vision—it shows how to do it in as little as four hours, using a time-tested, proven approach.Traditionally, companies call in consultants to help create a vision. Experts can help—for $4,000 per day plus expenses. And then there's the time involved: Visioning efforts can take months. This book offers a less-expensive, faster method. Called Grounded Visioning, and based on a concept called appreciative inquiry, the process allows groups to come up with a revitalizing vision that everyone buys into in half a day or less. How? As this book shows, the key is to be sure everyone takes part, to base the vision on how the team acts when at its best, and to imagine a vision bold enough to inspire but practical enough to feel achievable. This book covers the six quick but essential steps that ensure such results—with small teams or large groups. And any manager, not just trainers or HR people, can lead a successful Grounded Visioning session. Grounded visioning is a breakthrough concept of breathtaking simplicity and power that any leader can put to use today. It works, because it frees employees to share their dreams, hopes, and aspirations. As they soar, a vision naturally arises that recharges the team.

What is experiential education? What are its theoretical roots? Where does this approach come from? Offering a fresh and distinctive take, this book is about going beyond "learning by doing" through an exploration of its underlying theoretical currents. As an increasingly popular pedagogical approach, experiential education encompasses a variety of curriculum projects from outdoor and environmental education to service learning and place-based education. While each of these sub-fields has its own history and particular approach, they draw from the same progressive intellectual taproot. Each, in its own way, evokes the power of "learning by doing" and "direct experience" in the educational process. By unpacking the assumed homogeneity in these terms to reveal the underlying diversity of perspectives inherent in their usage, this book allows readers to see how the approaches connect to larger conversations and histories in education and social theory, placing experiential education in social and historical context.

Hitler's War Poets

Jay W. Baird

Cambridge University Press

Jay W. Baird comes to grips with a theme which has been generally avoided by over two generations of scholars and literary critics. He argues that German literature did not end with the advent of Hitler in 1933, only to be reborn after the fall of the Third Reich in 1945. Baird demonstrates how poets and writers responded enthusiastically to Hitler's summons to artists to create a cultural revolution commensurate with the political radicalism of the new state, thereby affirming the centrality of renewed German culture. Hitler's War Poets focuses on the lives and the works of six leading conservative, anti-communist yet revolutionary authors who articulated the dream of World War I veterans to form a socially just national community. Tradition was redrawn by Rudolf G. Binding, while Josef Magnus Wehner dramatized the link from Flanders fields and Verdun to the Third Reich. Hans Zöberlein exalted anti-Semitism, the Free Corps, and Nazi violence, providing the counterpoint to Edwin Erich Dwinger, who launched an unrelenting assault against 'Jewish-Bolshevism'. The torch was passed to Eberhard Wolfgang Möller, the leading bard of the revolutionary young generation. But it was Kurt Eggers, a tank commander in the 5th SS Panzer Division 'Viking', who delighted Hitler as he appeared as a prophet bearing the testament of Nietzsche's Zarathustra. Taken together, these authors offered the regime significant support. More importantly, their's was a tragic legacy because they provided aesthetic accompaniment to Nazi barbarism and ultimately to the Holocaust.

Crisis of Command in the Army of the Potomac

With the ascendancy of Ulysses S. Grant in late 1863, the command tone of the United States Army underwent a dramatic change. While Grant's predecessor George McClellan had been overly cautious about committing troops and resources to fight the South, Grant held the philosophy that a war fought for total ends required total means. Philip Sheridan set about reorganizing the army to reflect Grant's new style. During the last six months of the war, he relieved three generals of their commands because of their inability to follow his orders precisely. William Averell, Alfred Torbert and Gouverneur Warren found themselves and their careers casualties of Sheridan's intense determination to bring an end to the hostilities. Only Ranald S. Mackenzie managed to survive Sheridan's search for effective leaders, proving himself the ideal subordinate.
Custer and the Front Royal Executions of 1864
For nearly a century and a half most historians of the Civil War have accepted the claim by Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby that George Armstrong Custer bears all of the guilt associated with the summary executions of six of Mosby's Rangers at Front Royal, Virginia on September 23, 1864. This book challenges that view through a comprehensive look at the events of the day and a history of the persons involved, contending that Custer was not responsible for these executions, being neither present on the scene nor the initiating officer.
