This is a comprehensive, original and accessible account of all aspects of Jean Cocteau's work in the cinema. It is the first major study in English to appear for over forty years and casts new light on Cocteau's most celebrated films as well as those often neglected or little known.Jean Cocteau is not only one of French cinema's greatest and most influential auteurs whose work covered all the major genres but also an experimenter, collaborator, theorist and all-round ambassador of film. This lucid account provides a complete introduction to Cocteau's cinematic project in the context of his entire oeuvre, detailed analysis of individual films, and a thematic engagement with all his cinema from a range of interdisciplinary perspectives. The Cocteau that emerges is at once a materialist filmmaker and visionary who is committed to realism in all its guises and reveals the wonder and mystery of what he called 'the cinematograph'.

From the magical Beauty and the Beast to the surreal Orpheus films, Jean Cocteau is renowned as a leading figure in European cinema as well as a creative force collaborating with artists as diverse as Picasso, Diaghilev and Edith Piaf. Yet Cocteau’s work and life have rarely been examined together. Evaluating Cocteau’s career and his fascinating personal life on equal terms, James S. Williams offers here a groundbreaking analysis that sets them both within highly revealing historical and artistic contexts. James S. Williams’s biographical investigation of this poet, dramatist, novelist, designer, and filmmaker centres around Cocteau’s constant self-questioning and how it permeated his work. From Cocteau’s work in fashion and photography to his formal experimentation, to his extensive collaborations with male friends and lovers, the book charts the complex and unpredictable evolution of his work and aesthetic. Williams argues that Cocteau’s body of work is best viewed as an ethical, erotic project of aesthetics that carries important ramifications for our contemporary understanding of being and subjectivity. An engaging and wholly accessible account, Jean Cocteau is essential reading for all those fascinated by the man and his unforgettable work.

Art and Faith: Letters between Jacques Maritain and Jean Cocteau is a collection of personal correspondences between two influential figures of the 20th century - the French philosopher Jacques Maritain and the artist Jean Cocteau. The letters, spanning over two decades, reveal a deep and enduring friendship between the two men, as well as their shared interest in the intersection of art and spirituality.Throughout the book, Maritain and Cocteau engage in a lively and thought-provoking dialogue about the role of art in society, the nature of creativity, and the relationship between faith and modernity. They discuss their own artistic endeavors, including Cocteau's films and Maritain's philosophical writings, and explore the ways in which their work reflects their spiritual beliefs. The letters are arranged chronologically, providing a fascinating glimpse into the personal and professional lives of Maritain and Cocteau during a tumultuous period in European history. They touch on a wide range of topics, from the rise of fascism in Europe to the role of the Catholic Church in modern society.Art and Faith offers a unique perspective on the intellectual and cultural landscape of the early 20th century, as well as a profound meditation on the enduring power of art and faith in human life. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of philosophy, art, and spirituality. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

The Dance Theatre of Jean Cocteau

The Dance Theatre of Jean Cocteau

In an artistic career spanning five decades, and for which he was best known as poet, artist, dramatist, designer and film-maker, Jean Cocteau was also involved directly, and indirectly, with nearly twenty ballets. While he was not, in the strictest sense a choreographer, his influence on such works as Parade, Le Jeune Homme et la Mort, Orphee, and La Dame a la Licorne was all-pervasive - from the poesie of the dramatic action to lighting, costume and set design. His creations, in collaboration with composers, and choreographers, were fully integrated theatre pieces. Frank Ries researched all of Cocteau's ballets and, using interviews, Cocteau's own writings, reviews and critiques - some of which have never previously been translated - presents this survey and analysis of Cocteau's involvement in the world of dance. He recreates, from a new perspective, a portrait of a poet charged by Serge Diaghilev in pre-World War I Paris to "Astonish me!" and who made that command the inspiration of his career in dance.
