This fully-updated fourth edition introduces readers to the rich tapestry of persuasive technique and scholarship, interweaving perspectives from rhetoric, critical theory, and social science and applying their insights to practical political, social, and business contexts. This text examines current and classical theory through the lens of contemporary culture, encouraging readers to explore the nature of persuasion and to understand its impact in their lives. Employing a contemporary approach, it draws from popular culture, mass media, social media, advertising, political campaigns, and social movements to help readers become informed creators and consumers of persuasive messages. Case studies show how and why people fall for persuasive messages, demonstrating how persuasion works at a cognitive level. This new edition includes extended treatment of the ethics of persuasion, including opposing views on handling controversial issues in the college classroom; a new chapter on propaganda and ideology; and a greater focus on digital contexts and social media. Discussion questions, exercises, and key terms are provided for each chapter. This textbook will be a valuable tool for students of communication, media studies, politics, psychology, and business and advertising. Online resources for instructors include PowerPoint slides and test bank.

Embracing Complexity
Jean G. Boulton; Peter M. Allen; Cliff Bowman
Oxford University Press

The book describes what it means to say the world is complex and explores what that means for managers, policy makers and individuals. The first part of the book is about the theory and ideas of complexity. This is explained in a way that is thorough but not mathematical. It compares differing approaches, and also provides a historical perspective, showing how such thinking has been around since the beginning of civilisation. It emphasises the difference between a complexity worldview and the dominant mechanical worldview that underpins much of current management practice. It defines the complexity worldview as recognising the world is interconnected, shaped by history and the particularities of context. The comparison of the differing approaches to modelling complexity is unique in its depth and accessibility. The second part of the book uses this lens of complexity to explore issues in the fields of management, strategy, economics, and international development. It also explores how to facilitate others to recognise the implications of adopting a complex rather than a mechanical worldview and suggests methods of research to explore systemic, path-dependent emergent aspects of situations. The authors of this book span both science and management, academia and practice, thus the explanations of science are authoritative and yet the examples of changing how you live and work in the world are real and accessible. The aim of the book is to bring alive what complexity is all about and to illustrate the importance of loosening the grip of a modernist worldview with its hope for prediction, certainty and control.

The crisis or "death" of philosophy currently identified both within and outside professional circles is commonly attributed to the failure to find universals in metaphysics, epistemology, and, most obviously, in valuational judgment. Profundity concentrates on an assumption uniformly upheld in the theory of value, that all human values are contextually dependent. Harrell contends, to the contrary, that there exists one major value that is universal to humans, regardless of context. That value is profundity, or depth.Considering how "profundity" is used in our language leads Harrell to identify two fundamental sensory patterns that are common to all human life at its origin—an auditory pattern that is first experienced before birth and a visual one that is experienced immediately after birth. From analysis of these patterns as they recur in music and the visual arts, Harrell moves on to discuss their related manifestations in religious doctrine, ceremony, and experience and also in works of literature. Overall her theory entails a radical revamping of the concept of creativity, since no artist can create profundity as a universal value, and provides the first full-scale treatment of profundity in the history of Western philosophy.

Professor Jean Van Bladel, an eminent researcher and educator in fundamental electromagnetic theory and its application in electrical engineering, has updated and expanded his definitive text and reference on electromagnetic fields to twice its original content. This new edition incorporates the latest methods, theory, formulations, and applications that relate to today's technologies. With an emphasis on basic principles and a focus on electromagnetic formulation and analysis, Electromagnetic Fields, Second Edition includes detailed discussions of electrostatic fields, potential theory, propagation in waveguides and unbounded space, scattering by obstacles, penetration through apertures, and field behavior at high and low frequencies.
Electrical Engineering/Electromagnetics Singular Electromagnetic Fields and Sources A volume in the IEEE Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory Donald D. Dudley, Series Editor I will cherish my copy of this gem.James R. Wait This is a companion volume to the many available graduate textbooks on electromagnetic theory. It is devoted to a study of the infinities in electromagnetic fields and in their sources. Three types of singularities are investigated: (1) Those associated with strongly concentrated sources of charge and current, the relevant densities are expressed in terms of delta-functions and derivatives. (2) Those associated with the fields resulting from strongly concentrated sources. (3) Those which occur at sharp edges and vertices of cones and sectors. The approach is both theoretical and numerical. The information presented, far from being purely formal, is of importance for practical work. It can be used, for example, to accelerate significantly the convergence of a numerical algorithm. The book is written for electrical engineers and applied physicists who have an interest in the general topic of Maxwells equations and more particularly for those who are engaged in the actual solution of electromagnetic problems. The mathematical level of the text is that of the applied mathematician. An introductory chapter on Distribution Theory has been written in that spirit. Also in the series Mathematical Foundations for Electromagnetic Theory Donald D. Dudley, University of Arizona, Tucson 1994 Hardcover 256 pp Methods for Electromagnetic Field Analysis Ismo V. Lindell, Helsinki University of Technology 1992 Hardcover 320 pp The Transmission Line Modeling Method: TLM Christos Christopoulos, University of Nottingham 1995 Hardcover 232 pp

Thank you for picking up this book. What you will undoubtedly notice is that the 7 Checklist Items for Success is not a book for everyone. It is not a book for the timid or for those who consider themselves passengers enjoying the ride of life, with no significant purpose and no desire to leave this world a little better than they found it. This book was written for those of you who know and believe at your core that you were created for something bigger than your current situation or circumstance in life. This book is for those who ask why, and want to find a way to make something happen. You crave a way to realize your full potential. The why of your existence is your core belief about why you are here on this earth. If you believe you are such a person, then this book is for you. As you read, you'll soon find this book will show you the how of these whys. At my core, I believe that the satisfaction that comes from investing in yourself and others is the most rewarding and profitable return on your investment there could be. This is obvious in some instances, but not in others. You will be hard-pressed to find a better investment prospect than an individual who believes in herself and decides to commit to self-improvement. Self-improvement can turn a poor person into a philanthropist, an uneducated person into a scholar, a vagabond into an officer, and a student into a professor. Any circumstance can be turned around into a more positive one by self-improvement. Indeed, in addition to a focus on self-improvement, you also seek to focus on the improvement of the people around you. 7 Checklist Items for Success will show you seven ways to challenge yourself to create a more successful life. But why challenge yourself at all? You don't have to look further than how skeletal muscles get stronger, how a lobster grows, or how a diamond is created to find the answer. When you go to the gym, the more you challenge your musculoskeletal muscles by using them against resistance, the stronger and bigger they get. Because of the restrictive challenge posed by its shell, a lobster is only able to grow by shedding its shell. Diamond is only able to form due to intense pressure and temperature. The seven items on the Checklist to a more successful life will also push you to the limit. You will find many reasons or excuses not to use these seven checklist items daily, but if you really want to have a more successful life, I dare you to apply them
