"In Abroad for Her Country, Jean M. Wilkowski shares the story of her extraordinary career in the U.S. Foreign Service during the last half of the twentieth century. Born in an era when few women sought professional careers, Wilkowski graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and the University of Wisconsin and then rose through the ranks at the Department of State, from Vice Consul to the first woman U.S. Ambassador to an African country and the first woman acting U.S. Ambassador in Latin America. During her thirty-five-year diplomatic career, Wilkowski was sent first as a vice consul to the Caribbean during World War II, when the Department of State was "even taking in 4-Fs and women." She moved on to more challenging assignments in Latin America and Europe. For much of her career, she specialized in protecting and promoting U.S. trade and investment interests in such posts as Paris, Milan, Rome, Santiago, and Geneva. She also served during a revolution in Bogotá, attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, and the war between El Salvador and Honduras, when she called in U.S. humanitarian aid for 50,000 war-displaced persons. In 1977 she became coordinator of the U.S. preparation for the 1979 United Nations Conference on Science and Technology in Vienna. She worked closely with Notre Dame president Theodore Hesburgh, head of the U.S. delegation, and accompanied the delegation on its fact-finding visit to the Peoples' Republic of China.

Between 1860 and 1910, over 60,000 Pacific South sea islanders were lured from their villages: tricked, transported, forced to work in the harsh queensland bush, and then repatriated. In Jean M'Bara , The trepang fisherman (first published In french in 1919) Georges Baudoux tells their story.Translated by Dr Karin Speedy and published here in English for the first time, this book exposes the rich, complex and brutal world of a south sea islander caught up in the duplicitous trade that came to be known as blackbirding. For the English-speaking world it is an astonishing and confronting account of Australian and Pacific history.

An absorbing and well researched work which paints a graphic picture of life in a Victorian manufacturing town. The book describes the dramatic and radical effects of the Industrial Revolution on a small rural area and examines its impact on the landscape and local society. In addition to the background of rapid industrial development, the subjects of immigration and urban population growth are explored in some depth. However, the main focus of the work centres on the activities of ordinary men and women whose lived experiences form the basis of this book. Numerous fragments of the past have been pieced together to provide an authentic and moving account of the intolerable social and economic pressures of those times. The book also offers a glimpse of some of the dark and disturbing deeds which occurred in Victorian Widnes and its hinterlands.
Handbook on Women and Aging

Handbook on Women and Aging

Statistics show that women live longer than men, and that they constitute a substantial majority of the North American population over age 50. But more research has been done on the lives of older men, and the lack of empirical data on aging women has perpetuated a number of myths and stereotypes. Twenty years ago, for example, there was a presumption that only males worked and only males retired, though women often held jobs outside the home and these jobs were sometimes their only source of income. Studies of retirement, therefore, rarely treated the experience of women. Many fallacies still remain, despite a growing body of research conducted by women investigators. This reference provides a comprehensive overview of current research on women and aging and helps correct many mistaken assumptions.Chapters are written by expert contributors and are grouped in several broad sections. The first section provides a historical and theoretical perspective on women and aging and covers topics such as sexism and ageism, representations of older women in the arts, and the attitudes of society toward aging women. The second section treats economic issues related to employment and retirement. The third section explores the psychological and physical health of women and includes related information on topics such as voluntarism and religious activity. The fourth section looks at the particular concerns of women from diverse racial and ethnic groups. It also includes a chapter on the special needs of the rural elderly. The final section studies the relationships of older women, including the impact of widowhood and the significance of friendship patterns. Each chapter cites current research and the volume closes with a selected bibliography of major studies.

Coyle has compiled an impressive bibliography of more than 600 books, articles, government documents, films, and dissertations on women and the aging proces. . . . Concise annotations highlight the significance of each item. While some of the material is scholarly and theoretical, most is from books and journals that are very readable and easily accessible. A notable part of the bibliography is the extensive listing of films that would be useful for groups interested in doing programs on elderly women. RQThis bibliography provides ample evidence of the increasing research interest in issues affecting women as they age. Over 600 annotated citations for materials published from 1980 through early 1988 are included. Although the primary focus is on older women, references dealing with middle-aged women are also included. Both pragmatic and theoretical issues are covered in the resources cited. All of the materials identified are accessible through basic library systems. While research results are reported in some annotations, the primary objective of the work is to provide the reader with extensive references to useful and appropriate materials on women and aging. The major subject areas covered include roles and relationships, economics, employment, retirement, health, sexuality, religion, housing, racial and ethnic groups, policy issues, international concerns, and middle age. An extensive selection of general items covers materials that do not fit into specific categories, but which address important areas of concern and interest. This comprehensive bibliography will be welcomed by those involved in gerontological research and women's studies.

Organizational and Educational Change

Jean M. Bartunek

Psychology Press Ltd
2013
nidottu
Jean M. Bartunek, the 2001-2002 President of the Academy of Management, has written an excellent scholarly book on organizational and educational change. Using a joint insider/outsider approach, this book tells the story of a change agent group--a group of teachers--that was creating change in its organization setting, a Network of Independent Schools. The group's focus was on empowerment and professional development for teachers in the Network. The book describes virtually everything that happened in the group over its first seven years and summarizes what happened during its final two years. It explores the identity, work, and evolution of change agent groups in organizations, with particular emphasis on teachers and educational change. Through the book's extensive quotations and narrative account, the reader is enabled to enter into the world of the teacher group studied over the course of its nine-year history. In addition, the book includes analysis of the underlying processes involved in the change, focusing on the change agent group's identity, its actions and relationships with stakeholders as they jointly evolved over time, and their impacts on the vitality of the change effort. It contributes a new understanding of fundamental processes involved in organizational change, especially when viewed from the perspective of change agents. In addition, the book provides practical implications for change agents, specifically change agents in schools. As such, this account will be useful for graduate students and researchers in organizational change, educational leadership, and professional development. It is a part of Lawrence Erlbaum Associates growing series in organization management.
