10 Improvisational Clarinet Etudes

10 Improvisational Clarinet Etudes

Originally written with flute players in mind, 10 IMPROVISATIONAL CLARINET ETUDES actually works great for clarinet too These etudes cover a wide variety of standard jazz material and are recommended for classical as well as jazz players and woodwind doublers. Because of the wide range of the clarinet, the book contains all 10 etudes in two different registers It's like getting two books in one The lower register is great for learning the low end of the clarinet and the high register is more traditional for soloing. Both registers are challenging and have their merits of course. Most everything has been transposed up from the lower octave with the exception of any notes above the high G as we think it's best not to tempt fate.: )Streaming MP3s and free downloads are included so you can listen to and emulate the style, articulation, and feel of the etudes. The free streaming (and downloadable) clarinet MP3's are played by one of the great clarinetists on the planet, James Zimmermann (Principle Clarinetist Nashville Symphony 2008-2020) 10 Improvisational Clarinet Etudes written by 3x Grammy winning woodwinds virtuoso Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band/Bela Fleck & the Flecktones) over the changes of 10 jazz standards. This is a great book for any clarinet player who wants to learn more about jazz improvisation, jazz articulation, voice leading, and swing feel. Ideal for all classical or jazz clarinet players and saxophone doublers. Streaming MP3s and free MP3 downloads are available at www.jeffcoffin.com/clarinet If you're a clarinet player and you're looking for a fun challenge that will help you get more comfortable with improvisation, look no further Jeff has put together a fun collection of etudes that'll stretch your ear and help you understand the structure of a well-improvised solo. You'll explore a wide range of styles and you'll emerge with more confidence in your own abilities. And you'll be whistling the tunes for weeks James Zimmermann - Principal Clarinetist / Nashville Symphony (2008-2020)---I really enjoyed your book of tudes and plan to use them with students.Greg Tardy - Jazz Saxophonist & ClarinetistProfessor of Saxophone / University of Tennessee, Knoxville TN---Jeff Coffin's Improvisational Etudes for Clarinet are a great resource for classical teachers and students looking for a way to introduce the improvisational style into their playing. The etudes are written in a way that allows us to see clearly into the mind of a great improviser, while being accessible enough for the classically trained clarinetist to perform without fear Bixby Kennedy - Associate Principal Clarinetist of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, Associate Principal in the Albany Symphony, Principal Clarinetist of Symphony in C, Professor of Clarinet / Vanderbilt University---
10 Improvisational Tenor Sax Etudes
Originally written with flute players in mind, 10 IMPROVISATIONAL TENOR SAX ETUDES actually works great for tenor sax too These etudes cover a wide variety of standard jazz material and are recommended for classical as well as jazz players and woodwind doublers. Streaming MP3s and free downloads are included so you can listen to and emulate the style, articulation, and feel of the etudes. The free streaming (and downloadable) tenor sax MP3's are available at www.jeffcoffin.com/saxThese etudes are originally played and transcribed on flute by saxophonist/woodwinds virtuoso Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band/Bela Fleck & the Flecktones) and demonstrate his experience, expertise, and passion for music, improvisation, and music education. Jeff plays the MP3s available on the website. In the places where you see notes above/below each other, that is because the range of what's being played goes off the traditional written range of the tenor and goes into altissimo. Jeff recommends playing the upper notes if you can but the lower ones are acceptable as well, of course. Put in the work to be able to play in that upper register.

10 Left-Handed Improvisational Etudes for Saxophone
10 LEFT-HANDED IMPROVISATIONAL ETUDES FOR SAXOPHONE - by Jeff CoffinHow (and why? ?) did this all come about? A few years back, during a practice session, I decided to challenge myself by playing ONLY with my left hand. I made a couple of videos and kind of left it at that (no pun intended), but it was always in the back of my mind to go further with it. I had witnessed pianists like Phineas Newborn Jr., and others (as well as numerous classical pianists) play solos with only their left hands and I thought, if they can do it, so can I I discovered it wasn't quite as easy as it sounded. Cause it sounds kinda easy, right All of these etudes are improvisations over jazz standards. I played through them a number of times using iReal Pro as the backing track, and once I was ok with what I had played, I transcribed each solo. I changed a few little things here and there to make the etudes a little more clear, or to clean up some of the notes I didn't necessarily mean to play. I absolutely blame my right hand for not helping out more All my books are meant to benefit not only my current students but also the many students I have worked with over the years. I find there are certain fundamental aspects of the saxophone that usually need to be addressed and I have tried to address those various fundamentals in my books. Playing these particular etudes on saxophone has many benefits. They help in 'voicing' the notes more naturally and consistently. They also help with intonation, phrasing, voice leading, melody, rhythm, time, interval leaps, harmonic and rhythmic displacement, pattern recognition (sight reading), and more.To play these, you have to relax and sort of let your body take over the process. They aren't easy but they are certainly not unplayable. Most importantly, you're gonna learn some things and they are fun to play They are not meant to be played too quickly so take your time and really hear the phrases. I always recommend playing things slowly at first, that is to say, REALLY SLOWLY. Getting the lines clean and making them feel as smooth and consistent as possible is the goal. I first played these on tenor sax so, if you play them on alto be sure to transpose your backing track. You should play along using the iReal Pro app, because that's what I used when I played and recorded these. You can download a recording of me playing each of these etudes (on tenor and alto sax) on my website at www.jeffcoffin.com/lhetudesYou will notice that there are many 'fourth line D' notes in these etudes. For clarity, I am using side D (Palm D). I was tempted to use side Eb (Palm Eb), and altissimo, but avoided both because I felt that doing so would overcomplicate these already complicated etudes. So here it is, my book of Left-Handed Improvisational Etudes for your educational edification. I truly believe these will help musicians of all levels take their saxophone playing to an entirely new level. I certainly noticed a number of things in my own playing that were helped by doing these. Thanks so much for checking these out and please let me know what you think of them. Peace, JC

Confined to the Sidelines

Jeff Nisker

Confined to the Sidelines is a juxtaposition of the poems Jeff Nisker wrote in the time of COVID with four of his related social-justice poems. With this volume, Nisker hopes to imbue new compassion in health professionals, other health-policy makers and the general public, who all are or will be immersed in COVID's resulting diminishment of our health and social systems. COVID altered Nisker's life before he ever heard the word COVID, when he developed pneumonia from COVID in February 2020, two weeks before the world learned that a "virus of concern" had been rampant in Wuhan Province in China since Autumn 2019.Confined to the Sidelines is the only book in which Nisker's poems have remained as poems. His other creative writings have begun as poems, but have morphed into plays for wider engagement. Indeed several of his plays are but compilations of long prose poems, interwoven into a theatre format. Nisker decided the collection of poems in Confined to the Sidelines should remain poems because the concision of poetry is important in healthcare education due to the limited curricular minutes. Within these limits, poetry's precision can simultaneously unpack a topic and imbue compassion through a tightly-focused social-justice lens.
